    Torn Thumbnail?

    Has anyone done this before?

I did it yesterday at work, half the nail has ripped off, but it was still partially attached, so I stuck it down and put a bandaid over it.
Today I went to the chemist and bought some proper bandaids and some antiseptic which I have using to bath it with.
I have changed my dressing once today.

The part that was severed is turning white. The nail is white and the rest of the nail - the nail that is okay, is the normal color. I have no idea what it means when the nail goes white - is it dying?
I can't pull the nail off and I don't want to because it hurts like a bitch.

I am not happy with a simple bandaid so tomorrow I will get some decent gauze bandage to use, but since I can't find much on the net about how to care for a torn thumbnail (comes up stuff related to pictures and avatars) and I don't know why it is turning white, I was thinking someone here might know?

You have to clip the nail as much as you can until it grows out. Do not rip it. Otherwise you'll snag the piece of nail on something and it'll hurt like an sob.

    Duct tape.

There are nail mending glues but super glue will work too. Use a toothpick to apply.

This may sound odd, however, it part of the nail is still attached, you can "mend" it and keep it there until more nail can grow back.

Apply nail glue or super glue (works best) like Dreamy suggested, then cover the entire nail surface with rolling paper and trim to fit, then cover with nail polish. Clear if you are a guy or don't normally polish your nails

No nail paint until it heals. it needs to breathe , but keep it covered when working r out in public so you don't get staff infection . use Neosporin . I also soak mine in salt water to pull out the painful swelling .

but if it is turning white as Arkady has said that means that the part that is severed is dead by now. But I guess it can always grow back in time!

I checked it this morning and it's still white, and the part that was ripped seems to be starting to pull away from the nail bed. I can't move it though as it's still stuck, but it appears to be starting to pull away.

Still sore but at least it isn't infected. Hate getting it sweaty though. Good thing I have tomorrow off so I can try to get some air to it.

I did the same thing last week, it was bleeding, and felt like it had its own pulse it hurt so much. Ive cut it right down and stuck a plaster on it.

I managed to pull it off tonight. It is uncovered and the nail bed is nice and soft. Slightly tender though, but I hope the nail starts to grow again!
