    Australian Open Tennis!

the tournament is still young... but there have already been some notable results...

Fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko upset Maria Sharapova in the opening round, while Justine Henin showed little signs of rust as she took out Elena Dementieva.

Meanwhile over on the men's side Del Potro and Blake engaged in a five set marathon with the Spaniard

Overall five out of the top 23 seeds have already been eliminated from both the men's and women's side.

So who else has been watching??

I use to play in high school and when I went to college. Man I could chase that ball down every time before that 2nd bounce (I was rabid I'm tellin' ya) but I couldn't serve worth crap. I refused to wear those sissy white shorts and wore cutoff jeans.

I stuck to playing on the college baseball team.

I really don't see why some people are so quick to dismiss racquet sports as feminine and such... I will ask you what I ask anyone who shares your standpoint... have you ever watched olympic badminton?

And going back to tennis tell me one sport where two individuals can literally engage in psychological, physical warfare for sometimes over 3 hours a time?

I was very competitive in high school and part of college. I play every once in while now.

Pffft. Sophisticated men play tennis. I got into the back media room for the US Open one year and was so close to Pete Sampras I could have run my fingers through his hair.

If you are watching tennis live, it is really fun. TV? Not so much.

    1) I've seen Olympic badminton, at it was awesome.

    2) Jiu-Jitsu. And that's real physical contact. The pros in Brazil sometimes go for 10 hours in a big competition, maybe longer if need be.

Don't take everything i say literally. Tennis is boring IMO, and tennis fans are a little too uppity. But that's jus me~

no men will never label it a "sport" because women tend to be a heck of a lot better at it most of the time.

Besides there's no rulebook, and unlike real sports it is a form of exercise that most animals engage in and are required to perform not just for pleasure but as a biological necessity.

a gross generalization in my opinion... personally I find NFL fans as overly sensitive, particularly whenever I say that I prefer rugby to American football...

And no I'm not assuming you're an American football fan, just using that as an example....

I watch the Australian Open every year. I actually hate tennis, but I love the Open.

Lleyton Hewitt and Justine Henin are my favourite players, hope they make it into the finals.

I can't stand Federer, cocky prick that he is. I hope Rafa beats his pants off.

thank you for bringing this thread back on topic

currently I'm watching Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova battle Arvidsson of Sweden.

In retrospect I should have also posted a poll in this thread in terms of predictions of who'd win

I don't think I've caught that one. We usually see the Aussie's play. Lleyton is apparently playing this afternoon, but it's nearly 4pm and nothing yet.

    Grrrrrr.....

Hantuchova is playing over at show court 2... luckily there's a site where i can watch the less popular matches...

as for your compatriot Hewitt, don't despair, he'll be on soon enough... He's playing on Laver right after Stosur's match which should end shortly

Go Stosur! She'd better win. Looks like Lleyton's match might stretch into the newshour. God I hate that - a great match starts and they cut it short because we have to see how many murders and hoon drivers there have been in the past 24 hours, then they switch back and the bloody match is almost over.

Right now, Federer is playing some dude who I haven't heard of. In any case, I hope he loses but I doubt he will.
