Last night I drank three Flying Dog "Double Dog Double Pale Ales" plus a Spaten Oktoberfest (wife didn't like it so I drank it for her). Ugh....10.5% on the Flying Dog, so I'm kind of feeling it this morning.

Bottled my first batch of homebrew yesterday and got batch two in the fermenter.

I stumbled upon a bottle of one of our first batches of beer ever, a four-year old holiday ale. It was still yummy, but far too heavy for august. it was so dark that no light could escape it's surface.

Did you taste any of the first batch? I always save a sample for "quality control" purposes.

My wife was drinking porters last night.

I only tasted it to make sure it tasted like flat beer and wasn't sweet. It's now bottled and in the closet conditioning. Two weeks then it goes into the fridge.

That's awesome. What's your next batch?

We've got a stout to make and we're supposed to do something with our recently harvested home grown hops. Probably won't get to do anything until labor day.

My second batch is an Oktoberfest. It'll be ready a week after batch one is ready, so it'll be like all of a sudden I'll have a shitload of beer in the house.

Next up in the beer queue is a tripel (six month conditioning on that one) then a coffee stout. I figure by Christmas I will have done 5 or 6 batches using the Mr. Beer setup, so if those all go well I'll be putting a "real" starter kit on the holiday want list.

I'm super excited for you. It's definitely a fun hobby, and very addictive. Don't get discouraged if you blow a few batches. It happens to the best of us.

Couple of days ago I tried the Hobgoblin:

It's a 5.2% alcohol ale produced by Wychwood brewery in England.

On the back label it's written: "Full bodied & well balanced with a chocolate toffee malt flavour, moderate bitterness & distinctive fruity character & ruby red glow."

    Beer for Saison

I wasn't going to pick it up until tomorrow but plans change. I went to BevMo at tempe marketplace today and picked up 2 Lost Abbey brews for Saison.

    Lost Abbey Judgement Day (http://ratebeer.com/beer/lost-abbey-judgment-day/64627/)

    A 10.5% ABV Quadrupel

    Commercial Description:
A massive beer in every sense of the word. A stronger and more contemplative version of our Lost and Found Ale. Judgment Day is the base beer for our Cuvee de Tomme. Many of the Trappist Breweries produce a version of beer which ages incredibly well for many years to come. And, since none of us knows when the end of the world is coming, we suggest you stock up with lots of Lost Abbey beers so that when the end of the world magically appears from no where, you’ll have a beer or two on hand for even the stingiest of angels. Available in 750ml bottles and on draft at select inspired locations.

Lost Abbey Red Barn Ale (http://ratebeer.com/beer/lost-abbey-red-barn-ale/64608/)

A 6.5 ABV Saison (how fitting)

    Commercial Description:
This Farmhouse Ale traces its roots to the small rustic breweries of Southern Belgium. The word Saison comes to us from the French language and it means Season. Lightly spiced with Organic Ginger, Orange Peels, Black Pepper and Grains of Paradise, this brew promises to quench your thirst on the hottest Southern California days or wherever your travels may take you. Available in 750 ml bottles and on draft at select inspired locations.

I'm pretty sure I can get both breweries' beers. I know that Jolly Pumpkin tends to have a sour flavor, wild yeasts and such. Their white ale is my favorite. Plus their labels are just awesome!

wow. you're not kidding. I like when a brewery gets creative with their labeling. makes them all the more unique. Lost Abbey is like that. Especially with their denominational beers like judgment day and 10 commandments etc. My favorite label is teh one on the judgment day bottle. it features the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse riding together.

I wish they'd put their label art on shirts. Jolly Pumpkin would make a killing in merch sales.
