Great White FTW and I don't care how the snobs rate it!
Political correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional illogical minority and promoted by a mainstream media which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

thanks to evil elmo and some chatting we've had about beers ive now gotten into beers.

so i joined beer advocate and ratebeer. this expands my original hobby of spirits into a whole new realm.

originally i hated beer. i never liked it. it taste nasty god awful. but now i know why! bud is not a beer to drink. its great to get wasted with if you want to get wasted with nasty tasting stuff but its not real beer.

so now im learning what real beer and its many styles and flavors. heck one day i might make my own!

so im learning to enjoy beer. and im avoiding the big names like bud busch coors miller etc like the plague.

You'd be surprised how often I hear this at the homebrew store. Glad to see you're getting into beer. It's worth it, if you give it half a chance.

the trick is to find beers that you like. not everybody likes the same stuff. Some people like high alcohol content and hoppy and bitter (the two kinda go hand in hand) while some people just like to keep things simple or more on the sweet side. I like the two extremes but I find myself drinking more high alcohol content beers than anything else. if I am going to kick back and just chill I drink simple beers but usually my beers go along with a meal and so I get things like strong ales, barleywines, IPAs, etc. Not a whole not in between but there are always exceptions to the rule.

I'm working on some DFH Immort Ale

Vast in character, luscious & complex. Brewed with peat-smoked barley, this strong ale is brewed with organic juniper berries, vanilla & maple syrup. It's aged on oak and fermented with a blend of English & Belgian yeasts.

I've heard a lot of good things about Immort Ale. I can't get it here. I've tried. I can get some of their stuff but only a small selection.

I did some web searching for a clone recipe. it seems feasible. We'll see what happens.

This month's issue of Brew Your Own has SIX Stone Brewing Company clone recipes: Stone Pale Ale, Stone IPA, Stone Ruination IPA, Stone Smoked Porter, Stone Russian Imperial Stout and Stone Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout (12th anniversary beer). PM me if you want any of them.

I think we're going to attempt the IPA recipe. Woo!

Speaking of beer, I had a drain pour last night. A 22oz'er, too. It was the Stone Coast 840 Imperial IPA. It was awful.

I was reading on beeradvocate this morning that it's been retired. I'm guessing maybe I just had an old, skunky bottle? Those DIPA's need to be consumed when they are fresh.

Ironically DIPA's are one of the most shelf-friendly beers due to the higher alcohol content and extra hops. Bummer. Sometimes it can be just a bad batch or too much heat.

Hard to explain, but it just didn't have the nice strong hoppy taste. It almost tasted soapy, though I know that's not the word I'm looking for. Real heavy on the pine and had no balance to it. To be honest, I thought something was wrong just from the pour. It was much too dark and cloudy for a DIPA...more of a light shade of brown than a dark orange, kind of like a mud puddle. As with the taste, the aroma wasn't very nice either. That was the first DIPA I've ever tried that made me turn my nose up.
