Religion, culture behind Texas execution tally
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070812/..._executions_dc
"DALLAS (Reuters) - Texas will almost certainly hit the grim total of 400 executions this month, far ahead of any other state, testament to the influence of the state's conservative evangelical Christians and its cultural mix of Old South and Wild West.
"In Texas you have all the elements lined up. Public support, a governor that supports it and supportive courts," said Richard Dieter, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center...
...Like his predecessor, Governor Perry is a devout Christian, highlighting one key factor in Texas' enthusiasm for the death penalty that many outsiders find puzzling -- the support it gets from conservative evangelical churches.
This is in line with their emphasis on individuals taking responsibility for their own salvation, and they also find justification in scripture.
"A lot of evangelical Protestants not only believe that capital punishment is permissible but that it is demanded by God. And they see sanction for that in the Old Testament especially," said Matthew Wilson, a political scientist at Southern Methodist University in Dallas..."

Yeah, that's it, blame it on the christers.
It's more of an accurate description rather than a sad statement..

haha. That is true, the "official" position of the Church is anti-death penalty but many of the pips {people in pews** support it.
Obama is a transformational president in the mold of Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Ho Chi Minh, and Idi Amin.
lol. true.
not me though. I went back and forth on it for a while because of the nature of some horrendous crimes and finally came out the other side of it on the anti-dp side.

I've always wondered how so-called religious-right "pro-lifers" can tolerate things like the death penalty and Bush's Iraq War yet go batshit mental when the subject turns to embryonic stem cells or abortion...

First of all, calling a clump of cells an "infant" is ludicrous.
Second, your comparison is flawed.
The pro-lifer's position is that life, all human life as they see it, is sacred. A clump of cells in a woman's uterus is a human being to them and thus has a god-given right to life. Fair enough. However, then they turn around and judge that someone has forfeited his right to life for a crime. They, humans, make that judgement, not their god. They might say that the criminal deserves to die for his crime. Fair enough. But then they turn around and support a war like GWBs action in Iraq where tens of thousands of real, live innocent human beings, men, women and children, are slaughtered wholesale. Innocents dying is just part of war they say, despite there being no real pressing need to actually prosecute this war.
In other words, they can rationalize away the death of human beings half-a-world away or in a prison death chamber but do not make they allowance for others to make such a rationalization within their own bodies.
How does this work?
The issue of army recruiters showing up and talking to kids is a completely separate thing. If the recruiters show up and the parents know they're showing up and have okayed it, what's the problem? Don't parent's have the right to know -- and choose -- who is talking to their children?
But hey, at least you're talking about real humans now, not potential-humans (aka. "clumps of cells.")

This just proves that Jesus ain't got nothing to do with it.

well im exactly what the thread is about-why waste money feeding a cruddy loser that killed someone's child? Kill him and kill him fast..i have friends on the other side of this of course-the government is an immoral and idiotic thing anyway so its not an important issue but there it is...

child-killers were the one thing that kept me on the fence for a long time before I stepped down on to the anti-death penalty side, so I understand how you feel.

i saw that-and you know? Child killers may be the only ones who deserve it...

The most pious have always been the strongest supporters of killing. Anti-abortionists don't care about children, they care about being able to have one last shot at subjugating women and their reproductive choices to the will of men alone.

The issue, at least for me, isn't whether or not a child killer deserves to die. The issue is whether or not you can be 100% sure that you are executing the person that committed the crime.Originally Posted by fat mike

The head of this project said they had something like 35 cases in Dallas alone. Cases where somebody is in prison due to lying witnesses or supressed evidence. Apparently a lot of DAs care more about their numbers than serving justice.

When a person or a group is acting with the honest best intentions of another, they provide all of the facts. There is no need for misinformation or hiding information. If you look at all of the efforts made by the religious wrong, it has been about embracing lies and hiding facts. But rather than try to reduce unwanted pregnancies, the church prefers people to be ignorant. They fight against education. We can look back in history when the church forbid women from learning to read. We can look to the countries like Afghanistan where the Taliban forbid women from learning. Any time someone wants to prevent the truth from getting out, they have evil intentions. So it is a very fair generalization. I think some honest, good people have been caught up on the wrong side of the debate. But I think the nature of the church and the fact that it's actions mirror the very things we are fighting against in the rest of the world is a clear indication that it is not doing the right thing. If it were just, it could afford to be honest.Originally Posted by fat mike

we're fighting for abortion in Iraq? i know i know=you didnt say that-
is the church really deciding these things?most of the members believe a lot closer to the mainstream than you realize...Church is supposed to be there to help people change their lives not to effect legilslation

Really? That's why the church finances a home for a half-dozen Congressmen up the street from the Hill? So that it doesn't effect legislation? That's why our political leaders have to meet with church leaders regularly? That's why we see Sharia-style legislation regarding who can marry? Do you think it was atheists who were so up in arms about homosexuals?Originally Posted by fat mike

The choices on the table in '04 were fight in Iraq or not, and the church massed its forces to vote to stay. And while I think we all are responsible for our leadership whether we voted for them or not, I think that every person that voted to prolong this occupation has blood on the hand that pulled the voting lever. We are living the only possible outcome of integrating church and State through creating a politic of religion. The absence of morality. War and theft are moral. Science and charity are immoral. And the laws they try to pass and the policies that they support clearly fall directly on those lines. And if you vote with the GOP or you pay into your church, they are your policies, too.
