I gave the woman who cuts my hair a $20 tip last night. I suppose I should leave a few bucks for the newspaper delivery person...maybe send a small gift to my landscaper.

Who else do you need to give a handout to?

Garbage men, mail carrier, (although, little know fact; mail carriers are not supposed to accept cash. Maybe a box of chocolates?) The guy who plows your driveway, your massage therapist and the chick who does your nails.

I always bring a big plate of cookies to the nurses on staff at my Dad's oncologist’s office. They treat him so well; always right there to take his coat and hat and bring him a warm blanket. And they flirt with him too, which is just hilarious.

All employees of the USPS are not supposed to accept cash. It's in the contract thingy. Even my employment stuff has that listed.

The guy who plows your driveway

So he gets to "Plough your driveway" and you tip him as well?

We have a name for that 'round these parts...:|

I'll tip the superintendant of my apartment building, my barber and the dry cleaner. Of course I'll also be buying people a boat load of drinks at work over the next couple of weeks.

He's a lucky, lucky boy, isn't he? :D

why tip them more? Was their service they provided you any better this time of year?

Yes, yes Kraw.

We're all well aquainted with your views on tipping.

I'll bet if folks knew how hard you work at keeping their airport free from wildlife and other things that endanger their flight they'd be more inclined to "throw the dog a bone". The thing is most people don't even know your job exists much less have any contact with you.

Yes, my super does go the extra mile at Christmas time. He decorates the lobby and throws a little punch and cookie party for the kids. At hallowe'en he sits out front of the building in the cold and hands out candy to the trick or treaters. He doesn't have to do these things but he does them anyway. As a matter of fact when ever I see him walking by the pub I ask him in for a beer or a coffee.

My barber will make time for me even after a busy day because he knows I have little time for things like hair cuts.

I appreciate their efforts and try to recognise them.

what does that have to do with the holidays though? Why tip someone more because it's a certain time of the year?

I don't work in a service industry, so I don't expect a tip or even expect anyone to know that I'm even there :D I like to stay out of sight and out of mind. If someone did give me a tip, I would wonder what's wrong with them or take it as if they think I'm poor and need the money  To me, it would be more of an insult

as far as getting my hair cut, I don't have a barber. I just use whomever is available at fantastic sams. It's rarely the same person and all they use is clippers. Not like they do anything outstanding or spend more then 5 mins.

Because it feels good. For both parties.

Kraw, it's just a nice way of saying, "I know how hard you work and I appreciate it."

And, for some of these people, (the nurses at the clinic, for example), from time to time, I am going to ask for special favors. Maybe it will be something as simple as a blood test to check his white cell count, or maybe I'll try to sneak him in for an appt.

The fact that these women, who see dozens of patients every day, will drop what they're doing and rush out to greet my Dad, call him Uncle Julius, take his coat and hat, fetch him a wheelchair, get him a blanket and tease and pet him makes him feel so good. Bringing them treats is my way of saying thank you.

Nobody ever tips in Paris (or tip really lousy) and given that I do, the girls at the hair saloon love me :D.

you tip anyone who provides you a service and is also your friend... for example I live in an apartment building so I never speak to my postal worker person... as a result I dont feel any desire to tip them... on the other hand my landlord and I always chatter away whenever I come in to pay rent so she is my friend and I will prolly bring her cookies or something.

I dont think that money is as apropriate because it is less personal... the idea is to give presents to people you do business with who treat you well in business... this way they keep treating you well and it's good relations but in a personal way...

the idea mainly is to get people who provide you with a service to be sick from all the damn candy and cookies! :)

I hope you don't have to wait 7 weeks like we did. The road would just get packed down nice & then it would get warm, and the snow would fluff up again. :P
