View Full Version : The Rose Parade
EMTrue 12-03-2006, 06:34 PM Who all watches this each year? Your thoughts on it? Have you ever seen it in person?
I used to watch it as a kid...as an adult, I havent had much interest...but, this year I just moved 1 minute literally, away from the street it is on...and I am somewhat excited to see it in person...dont know why, just am. So, I guess I will be up all night staking out a spot for the family and freezing my nuts off (if I had some)....and watching the street party that goes on all night long just before.

My issue here is with the freezing bit. That is usually best done in this neck of the woods.
Prime parade spot-grabbing is best done here, for the Mummers Parade on New Years Day, anywhere along South Broad Street. You can also watch your fair share of New Years' Eve crazies anywhere in the Center City area as well, of course, but a number of them do stumble their way southward for as long as they can manage to hold their liquor.
Needless to say, the most hardcore of crazies can be found in Times Square on New Years' Eve, I'd say. It's something I've not attempted myself, not even in the years I lived just outside of NYC. They're probably not nearly as fun as the crazy people I encountered during Halloween festivities in Greenwich Village.
So I guess it's safe to say that I don't watch the Rose Parade. Sorry.
I marched in it. 1980. Right behind a giant pink poodle sponsored by Baskin Robbins that broke down a few times. It's hella long - 5.5 miles if I remember right. Orange and Colorado Blvd. There is a wierd corner onto Colorado. Or is it Orange? That was too long ago.
flaming_liberal 12-03-2006, 10:52 PM What's the Rose Parade?
What's the Rose Parade?
New Years Day
Pasadena
Bowl Game
Beer
Television
Floats
Bands
It's what people do to pass time after a night out.
Unless they're passed out.:D
EMTrue 01-02-2007, 04:45 PM Camped out. Got front row seats 1.5 blocks straight down from my apartment- got to use my own bathroom (yay) and shower (yayx2) and we had tons of fun...and being a Star Wars fan-family, we really enjoyed the Star Wars themed floats and characters and seeing George Lucas....was kool.

Um. Not sure? Not sure what those are?
HiddenSamantha 01-02-2007, 05:53 PM Rose parade sucks....
velocitygirl 01-02-2007, 06:28 PM I used to watch the Rose Parade on the tele when I was kid too EMTrue!
Now that I live in Cali, I could actually go...if I am ever not working on NY's.
Glad you had fun!
Um. Not sure? Not sure what those are?
Little sticks with curly paper that extends and retreats out about 4 feet or so. They are colorful things. I remember them all over the place back in 1980 marching the parade. The corner of Colorado and Orange is a tough one for a marching band to do right.
ATBlythe2000 01-06-2007, 11:47 AM I've seen the parade 5 times. working for all of them. I used to work for a radio station that broadcasted it (for the blind). My favorite part was the friends you made around you & the smell of flowers all day on colorado blvd.
Jojo. It starts on orange and turns onto colorado blvd.
No_Brakes 01-06-2007, 09:48 PM Since it poured on New Years Day here, the Mummers Parade was held today.
And since I had to work today, I was only able to catch a few of the string bands on the TV at my dad's place. :(
Oh well, maybe next year.
EMTrue 01-09-2007, 07:07 PM OOhhhh, I used to play with chinese yo-yo's as a kid....and that was pretty much the 80's....maybe that was an era thing? Nope, I didnt see any..they had plastic toys and such...
Yup, we met several good people, exchanged emails and phone numbers so I can give them the photos I took of their families :)
Tons of people on the route I recall. We didn't lose a single person to heat or exhaustion. The day after we did Disneyland. Those were some good times.
starxero 01-17-2007, 06:12 PM I actually went this year. My first time watching it the whole way through. Whenever I watch it on TV it seems that I flip to that channel the same spot of the parade every time. Anyway I took a million pics. http://good-times.webshots.com/album/556787600cXBaUu I went with my dad, got there about 4:30 AM. We weren't on the curb but we were definitely close. It was worth the wait though.
EMTrue 01-25-2007, 02:00 AM I have a ton of pics too....started to put them on photobucket but got bored and never finished...sigh.
