View Full Version : Antique Collecting
Redfield 06-07-2002, 01:55 AM Are there any other members here who collect antiques or vintage collectibles.
I'm fascinated to see what others find valuable when it comes to antique collecting.
As for myself: just about anything can be up for grabs. My favorite for a number of years has been dishes (e.g. bone china, ironstone, pottery, and the ilk).
92Notch 06-07-2002, 05:23 PM I've got old coins and stuff.
When I get around to buying a house I plan to get some old furniture and stuff ...
86Dude 08-07-2002, 12:39 PM I am into old crap as well. Most of the old crap I have is what I dig, or inherit. When I say dig, I mean, find with a metal detector and recover. Old stuff was built to last, which is why I like it.
cyberpunk 08-10-2002, 08:37 PM hmmm, cant say that im into that
Criminal 08-22-2002, 12:27 AM I'm mainly into war stuff. I do have some stuff from the Soviet Army. I did get a few things from WW 2. I have this old stamp book that has stamps from the third reich. Its really interesting to see Hitler on a stamp. I also have some stamps with Joe Stalin's face on it. Currently I am trying to find some Japaneese war stuff but thats really hard to find.
i can't believe i missed this one... :)
i'm a big fan of household type stuff... phones, appliances (toasters, fridge, fans, etc), kitchen items etc. i have several working edison phonograghs, and even edison kinetiscope (early 1900's movie projector).
i also do the coin thing. that was my first real hobby.
QtrHrsmn 10-19-2002, 10:09 AM Old car and garage memorabilia...
Like, My Dad had a Mobil Full service station w/ garage...
On the wall in my shop is his old lit Mobil clock, with the Pegasus,
Old metal signs from everything... Ford, Jaguar, etc... an old gas pump...(hooked to my tank...LOL) Old manuals... like the 1966 Jaguar service manual... Car parts... like hood ornaments, badges, etc... Old car diagnosis tools, like my oscilloscope, etc...
If it has to do with cars, or high performance cars... you name it, I prolly have it...

That's always fun. :) I just sealed the deal on an old Westinghouse refrigerator in excellent working condition. Mari has inherited an old Singer sewing machine from her grandmother. It dates prior to 1920, if I'm not mistaken.
Skittles 10-21-2002, 02:07 AM My mom and I hit antique stores all the time. We've never really bought anything though.

that's what a lot of friends do. But instead they hit up yard sales! You would be suprised what you can find in one of those. I mean the rich give away a lot of valuable things. They need to make room for the "new" stuff.
I guess the what the Grinch said is/was right, "One man's waste is another man's Popuri.":D (or something like that. hehe)
sewing machines are cool... my sister inherited my grandmothers. i also have a old westinghouse fridge in my workshop :D forgot to ad old kero lamps to my list of collectables...
and here's something for you antique gurus who like hitting flee markets and garage sales:
http://geocities.com/red_rocket_rt/patchart.html
since the item was made/sold close to the year in which it was patented, this chart may help you figure out how old a potential find may be.

AWESOME! Thanks, man.
For my blue willow collection, I'm looking for a ceramics guide to dating. If you have any idea where I could find one (other than books by Kovels) that would be great.
:D
