I flew out of Glasgow (Scotland) on Sunday afternoon. There were cops walking around outside with guns, once I got in I was given a clear plastic bag - the guy wanted to see what I was taking on and this was all I was allowed:
My purse
My travel docs
Any meds had to be examined and approved by the Airport Chemist (liquids were not allowed even if prescription), if it wasnt prescription it had to go. I had to say goodbye to my precious travel sickness pills (in future I will ask my Doc to provide a 'script or letter) since i just bought them from a Chemist at home. Half way through the flight from Dubai to Perth they wore off. Not good.
Flights to America - passengers were not allowed to carry anything other than the essentials - not even AFTER going through customs!
When going through customs everything that was being carried (as usual) was put through the xray machine, shoes has to be removed and xrayed, mothers were asked to test their childrens food/drink, prams were xrayed and examined and then everyone was patted down by a security officer.
Once you were through customs (except flight to the US) you could buy anything you liked - books/mags etc. But you couldnt bring anything in before customs (they would have make a KILLING at WH Smith shop.)
To be honest, those first few days of this happening (And until they relax the security a bit more) was probably the safest to travel.
