On Sunday, my father was drinking lots of water and resting because he had been informed by one of his doctors that he had a kidney stone. He was feeling the pain of the stone, but wasn't sure if it would be a problem or not, and if simply flooding his body with fluids would be enough. He's had kidney stones before, and passed some and had others removed.

Yesterday, my mother drove him to the E.R. at Cedars Sinai. He was admitted to the hospital, put on pain meds, and kept overnight. My mother told me that he would be seeing a doctor this morning and that we'd know more then.

This morning I found out that he was scheduled for surgical removal of the stones today, and my mother asked me to come to the hospital after work so that I could be on-hand if necessary.

As of 5 p.m. PDT, he was headed for the O.R. I'm going to swing by my apartment to pick up some things, and then I'm heading over to Cedars from there.

What fun. :hmm:

*hugs* :(

I'm sorry that your dad is going through this. I hope he gets better soon....in the mean time, try not to worry too much. I'm sure he's going to be fine. :)

Oh, honey, I can't tell you how sorry I am. I understand how difficult it is to watch a parent's body betray them.

It's a recoverable disease, and he may well have every chance at a great prognosis. Think of that, not what might be.

Oh, I'm not worried. Like I said, he's had them before and he was fine for years--right up until this weekend.

And with the pain meds and anethetics that he's on, I'm sure that as far as he's concerned, he's fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine. :p

My concern isn't for my dad--I know he'll be fine when he's able to pee without pain again. I just know that my mom's going to twist herself into knots over this. She stresses out at the drop of a pin sometimes.

Dad's in his recovery room. He gets discharged in the morning.

They used a sonic machine to dissolve the kidney stone into a sand powder, but the initial stone was 6mm by 8mm. That's a big ****ing kidney stone.

And my mom was super stressed. Like, if she put on a mood ring, I think it would have gone polka-dotted she was so stressed. Or maybe it would have exploded. One of the two.

I'm sorry that your dad is going through this.
Actually it sounds more like something is going through him. Ba-dum-bum. Thanks, I'll be here all week. Try the veal, and don't forget to tip your server.

Seriously, Xach, I'm sorry your family had to go through this. As it happens, my own dad just went through the same thing, and it's not a lot of fun. Given the family history (everyone including my mother) it's highly likely that I'll find out for myself what kidneystones feel like. Not looking forward to it. I'm glad things seem to have worked out OK.

I talked with a woman last night who said that the pain she felt from her kidney stones was actually worse than the pain she felt from childbirth.

Lucky us, huh?

No, not worse. But it is the thing that's the closest to giving birth, though. Hope your dad will recover just fine and you mom will finally relax.

It's tough to go to hospital for your own parents!
