No. First she would have demanded a "bipartisan" congressional commission to determine how it was that Bush was in the Bushes with a dart gun to deliberately pop your balloon (because he hates you "little" people, and the "big oil" demanded that all existing balloons be popped because they are made from petroleum byproducts and they want to ONLY raise their profits),

then they would demand that a government agency come in and replace the balloon and provide "therapy" for your post-traumatic-baloon-disorder.

To facilitate all of this of course would require that the "rich pay their 'fair' share" through a 1000% percent increase in the taxes they pay.

Oh yeah, and the Air Force would have a bake sale or something.

...and FEMA would start handing out balloons to all the children in the neighborhood, except for the one who actually lost one :|

And GW Bush would authorize the NSA to bug your house without a warrant because you might be a balloon-popping terrorist.

and the Republicans in Congress would begin a debate about chocolate vs. vanilla ice cream.

Your wife's actions of doling out another balloon sound pretty "Liberal" to me. Had she been a conservative, she'dve expected your child to go balloonless...would've told her that she'd have to buy a balloon on her own because Cons don't believe in handouts. And after refusing to give her a cent to help the poor kid out, she'd tell the kid "I'm not just going to give you money...go get a job!"
