A New Religion
I believe in God. For two reasons.
Why is there something, instead of nothing. This concept is unanswerable except for something must have done it. The universe being infinitly old is something I just can't get my head around. I am taking this as proof that at least something is out there. The other reason is that sometimes it just seems like it, sometimes things happen that just don't seem like they are by chance. Just little things, like coincidences and other random things.
Acknowledging that there is something out there, I still find it odd that people always attribute everything to god. All there good fortune, the fruits of their hard work and achievement. I think we should take pride in ourselves and in civilization as a whole. Humans were given an absolute blank slate and we came up with an amazing and mind-blowing world. And as ****ed up as the world can be, it is still civilization and in the end its progress and I have faith in its continued progress as slow and torturing as it may be.
So I think this new religion should be based on our debt and our pride in civilization and our achievements. We owe all of humanity and our ancestors to be good people. We will unite on this basis and dedicate ourselves to studying what that other something out there is... Everyone will be welcome. You may worship who or what you wish. We will study the other religions and ask moral questions. We will strive to live our lives by putting faith in people to know what is right and what is wrong and having faith in them to try and live by that code.
This seems like truth to me. The world needs a reason to unite across cultural and geographic borders. If we can collectively acknowledge the truth that we don't know the nature of god and the universe but we do know that civilization can continue to progress and that we can be better than we are, maybe we can actually understand each other.
Does this make sense to anybody else? Does anyone want to talk about this and maybe help me develop it more? You can email me at mondaatje@gmail.com.
