The GBR is a multiple-use Marine Park so different activities (boating, fishing, diving, etc) are allowed in different areas. Currently less than 5% of the Park is protected from commercial and recreational fishing and seafloor trawling is still permitted in half of Reef waters. This is a huge threat to the biodiversity of the Reef and has an impact on fragile turtle, dugong and inshore dolphin populations.

Earlier this month, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority launched the "Community Participation Phase" of its "Representative Areas Program (RAP)". In plainer English that means that we are all invited to participate in the establishment of a network of Marine Sanctuaries throughout the Reef.
The launch of RAP gives us all the opportunity to ensure that the amazing beauty of the Reef is properly protected for future generations to enjoy in years to come. WWF(world wildlife foundation) is calling for the establishment of a network of Marine Sanctuaries to preserve the Reef’s biodiversity.

Marine Sanctuaries need the support of our politicians and politicians respond to the needs of their constituents. So write to your local Federal MP and ask them to join the push for Marine Sanctuaries. The WWF Great Barrier Reef Campaign website has all the contact details you need plus a suggested Campaign letter and information about other ways that you can help. Just log on at www.gbr.wwf.org.au and go to "what can you do to help" to sign a petition.the rest of the site is really great too!

From overseas?

You can really help too! Write to the Australian Prime Minister and your local Australian Embassy or Consulate insisting that the Reef is properly protected for the sake of the whole international community. Again, details and letters are on the website. Just click on the "Help Protect the Reef" link.

You’ll find plenty of information about the benefits of Marine Sanctuaries on the website too and If you want to make a formal submission to the Marine Park Authority, there are links to their website.

thanks everyone!

Thanks Jody!

I live near a National Marine Sanctuary and preserving the beauty of the sea is something to take action on.

Thanks, again, for the link.
