View Full Version : Dixie Chicks CANCELS **LOTS** of Stateside tour dates
BadNews88 06-10-2006, 12:13 PM Kind of a SHAME that The CHICKS are pariahs merely for having the GUTS to SPEAK THEIR MINDS! (Link Courtesy The BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION) (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/5062798.stm):(
A concert industry magazine claimed shows had been dropped in Republican states such as Oklahoma and Tennessee.
And yet, NEIL YOUNG's latest offering gives itself over to LOTS of critiques opposing The President's policies & such....and you don't see HIM being hung out to dry.. (Sexism on the prt of the GOOD OL' BOYS, perhaps?:hmm: )
No fear, CHICKS, you WILL prevail.....
BUSH's day will come & go....but YOU will still be around!:nice:
boedicca 06-10-2006, 12:14 PM Maybe people just don't like their music enough to want to spend umpty-umpteen dollars on concert tickets.
OhJenMac 06-10-2006, 11:03 PM I wish they were coming to Cleveland, I'd definately go
SivVulk 06-11-2006, 02:09 PM Maybe people just don't like their music enough to want to spend umpty-umpteen dollars on concert tickets.
still i bet my life their approval rating within in the United States is higher than that of the President's
veracity00 06-11-2006, 02:42 PM ^ LOL. I agree.
boedicca 06-11-2006, 02:45 PM The Dixie Chicks are not responsible for National Security. They just get to be irresponsible and self-indulgent, which appeals to those with similar qualities.
Just sayin'.

I didn't know the Dixie Chicks were also Republicans ... thanks for the info ...
Truth Teller 06-12-2006, 08:42 PM In Blue State America and in Canada their ticket sales are going through the rooof and so they have added more Blue State and Canadian dates and after the tour gwets under way in the U.S. [they are currently in the U.K.opening for The Eagles]demand might pick up in the Red States.
Interestingly, promoters in Red States say politics is not the main reason for most poor ticket sales,it's that people in those states can't afford $110.00 for two good seats.
Taking The Long Way is the biggest selling album for the second week in a row on[b] both the Pop and Country album charts.
The Dixie Chicks are excellent musicians[their bluegrass album called Home -recorded live with all acoustic instruments in one take- proves that], NASCAR-type conservatvies are not so much into music than into image,Toby Keith for the most obvious example.
Toby Keith is not a musician,he couldn't record an album like Home if his life depended on it,he is a entertainer who panders to people's prejudices and they fall for it like sheep.
jwreck 06-13-2006, 10:49 AM i'd have to say that most fans of actual country music like neither the dixie chicks nor toby keith. suck is suck, no matter what the politics.
PlatyGuy 06-13-2006, 10:52 AM They just get to be irresponsible and self-indulgent, which appeals to those with similar qualities.
Apparently not, in at least one case.

But the DCs recorded a bluegrass album of all acoustic music ,live in the studio ,every song recorded in one take and one take only.
You can't get more real country than bluegrass, plus bluegrass [like jazz] is a music of instrumental virtusoisity, precision and [like jazz] can be an music of improvison.
jwreck 06-13-2006, 09:37 PM yeah, well you can't get more country than hank williams, but how many non-country artists have done his songs?

I've caught pieces of that one ocassionally, it's good stuff. didn't know it a one take deal, though. Can you give me the name of that set?

I would say George Jones and Dolly are better. I never particularly cared for Hank Williams; we all liked Bob Wills and some others a lot better down here.

jk, you're entitled to your opinion, no matter how wrong it is. ;)

Swappy 06-14-2006, 01:01 AM Actually the who cancellation of tour dates is a myth, from their mailing list below:
Hi Chicks Fans-
We know there has been a lot of buzz about "The Accidents and Accusations Tour," so we wanted to make sure you had the real deal. The following statement was released today:
Eight new cities have just been added to the first leg of the North American Tour (see dates in the Upcoming Shows section and the blog). No shows have been cancelled. Some originally announced late summer concert dates that were going to be put on sale the weekend of June 10 were not put on sale until a final determination is made if they are going to be moved to the fall. More tour details announced as they become available.
And to get you ready for the tour, the Chicks have their first-ever concert webcast!! Log on to dixiechicks.msn.com on Thursday, June 15 at 10 PM ET/7PM PT for a ninety minute show from London, England.
Thank you as always for your support --

I agree. Jazz requires more virtuosity than any other kind of music, and while Bluegrass is usually not as complicated and is more limited technically, one still needs to be an excellent musician to play it well. I personally like using some Country and Bluegrass elements when I play Jazz, it can work good.
The Dixie Chicks are excellent musicians[their bluegrass album called Home -recorded live with all acoustic instruments in one take- proves that], NASCAR-type conservatvies are not so much into music than into image,Toby Keith for the most obvious example.
As a musician myself who plays live both electric and acoustic, I have to agree. A lot of DC's songwriting I may find average and too much "top 40" for my taste, but nevertheless they are excellent musicians, I'd love to meet and jam with them someday, while on the other hand I don't even feel Toby Keith,as a musician, is superior to myself and MANY MANY other people I know.
Toby Keith is not a musician,he couldn't record an album like Home if his life depended on it,he is a entertainer who panders to people's prejudices and they fall for it like sheep.
I have a lot of respect for Keith's patriotic and anti-islamist views (by the way, I feel the same about DC's opinions about Bush...I'm against both islamists and their oil hungry friends), however I agree that he isn't much of a musician at all, he's ok singer but there are LOTS who are much better, and while a couple of his songs are listenable, that's not great songwriting in any way, and DC are definately WAY superior.
Truth Teller 06-14-2006, 05:05 PM I've caught pieces of that one ocassionally, it's good stuff. didn't know it a one take deal, though. Can you give me the name of that set?
The album is called Home,it was on the charts when the Bush shit went down.
how can you not care for hank williams? you are talking about hank sr, right? :nonono:
To each their own ,but I gotta go with jwreck on this one,the only country artist I would rank above Hank Sr. is Johnny Cash, even then it's close.

Well,a great artist in the neck of the woods where you went to school-namely Bruce Hornsby -has made it a point to work in jazz and in bluegrass ,and with The Grateful Dead/jam band scene because all those styles advance him as a musician.

Yeah, he's a great musician and a very nice guy too. He lives in my town and he's "the king" here in Williamsburg. My sister goes to school with his kids, in fact. I don't know him as good as some of my bandmates do, but I did meet him a few times and I enjoyed talking to him and listening to him play. I told him about how much I liked his playing on Grateful Dead's live cover of "Maggie's Farm" and he said many good things about Jerry Garcia, although when I asked him about a possible reunion with The Dead, he said that it is very unlikely something will happen in the near future, despite Bob Weir and Phill Lesh always asking him to.
lunar 06-16-2006, 09:57 AM i dont know i liked their new stuff, but i'm not surprised people don't want to see them in concer considering all the controversy.
Truth Teller 06-16-2006, 03:47 PM i dont know i liked their new stuff, but i'm not surprised people don't want to see them in concer considering all the controversy.
Well, high ticket prices might be playing a bigger part than that.
But again,Red State Amercia does not represent all of America[I seriously doubt that they really represent most of America].
And it isn't that most Red Staters are stupid,it's that most Red Staters are being lied to by very skillful liars and they often don't have access to the other side of the story.
tweedy 06-21-2006, 01:35 PM I think it's kinda a bummer that they cancelled some of their shows. Maybe when they're ready to tour in the cities that they cancelled, then I'll go to one of them to see how their performance is. I'm actually curious, has anyone seen them live? If so, how was their performance? I do like how they redid Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide," which is a song I've been listening to on Napsterlinks. They are pretty talented. What do you guys think?
Landslide by Dixie Chicks

jwreck 08-09-2006, 09:25 AM they just cancelled their show in houston, and apparently many more.
Baboon 08-09-2006, 09:36 AM I honestly don't understand how anyone can like their music. They sound so horribly awful. SUCK isn't a strong enough word.
And I like country music. (some of it, anyway)
enkahootz 08-09-2006, 01:35 PM They'd get it...
But they'd never get my money...
Or my freedom!
And at least Neil Young has some credibility to back him...
By the way...CDB is the best...ever...

So tell me whatcha think about REAL COUNTRY GIANTS like TENNESSEE ERNIE FORD, CONWAY TWITTY, & CHARLEY PRIDE?:p
boedicca 08-09-2006, 05:42 PM Dead, Dead, and Old.
BadNews88 08-09-2006, 06:11 PM Well....Uh, YEAH!
Criminal 08-10-2006, 04:42 AM I might go see them just to show support.... even though I don't like their music.
Truth Teller 08-12-2006, 05:28 PM TENNESSEE ERNIE FORD,
Interesting guy.
My grandmother and parents played his Hymns albums so much that I now go into convulsions just thinking about them, but his early 50s "Hillbilly Boogie" records were kind of precursors to rockabilly and I love rockabilly.
And his biggest hit "Sixteen Tons" was interesting,a classic song by folk/country artist Merle Travis ,done with a jazz [especially Stan Kenton] arraignment.
Plus, from what I understand Ernie Ford had some classical training too.
CONWAY TWITTY,
I love both his rock and roll and country work.
& CHARLEY PRIDE
One of the all-time greats.:nice:
When I was growing up,it was in a area [and era] that really didn't have formatted radio, when I was a kid you could hear George Jones,James Brown,Frank Sinatra,Dave Brubeck ,Peter,Paul and Mary,The Beatles and The Rolling Stones back to back on the same station.
I guess that put the seeds in me for the musical multiculturalism that I have.
