Left alone in charge of the family bungalow, 18-year-old Sean Davey promised his mother not to have any wild parties.
He was true to his word - but still managed to raise the roof.
The teenager is believed to have left a basket of clothes from the washing machine on top of the cooker, before accidentally turning it on as he went out. The clothes caught fire and an aerosol can in a nearby shopping bag exploded.
The resulting blaze and blast lifted the roof several inches into the air before it landed back in place, and caused £35,000 of damage.
Sean, a sales assistant for an electrical firm, returned to find the kitchen ablaze at the house in Caister-on-Sea, Norfolk. He then had to break the news to his mother Joanne and stepfather Paul Bray, who were half way through a two-week holiday in the Scottish Highlands.
Fire investigators believe that Sean left the plastic washing basket on the electric hob, which he must have switched on by knocking a knob with his arm.
On the worktop beside the cooker was a bag of shopping including a can of Sure deodorant, which subsequently exploded with shocking force.
The family's six-year-old labrador Sasha was asleep on the Brays' bed and had to be rescued by the fire brigade. Their other dog Jet, a 12-month-old labrador cross, ran out of the back door in terror and was found in another garden eight hours later.
