Jolt Chewing Gun Contains Caffeine
POSTED: 10:50 am EDT May 25, 2006
LOWER BURRELL, Pa. -- A Lower Burrell school student is facing a three-day suspension for sharing gum with a classmate.
Jolt chewing gum has caffeine and ginseng.
The Lower Burrell school superintendent said consuming and passing out the gum violates the school's drug awareness policy. That's because caffeine is considered a stimulant.
Parents told Channel 11 they did not understand the suspension.
Resident Elizabeth Grombacher said, "I think it's stupid. Everything's getting too politically correct it's so wrong."
"It's probably just like Mountain Dew or something like that. If it's got a lot of caffeine in it and they probably sell the pop at school,” parent Nita Serene said.
Jolt chewing gum is sold over the counter at drug stores and vitamin distributors.

The school probably sells Mountain Dew in its vending machines.
fenianforever1689 05-29-2006, 02:54 AM Zero tolerance is stupid.
And people wonder why the teachers unions are held in such a low opinion.
fat mike 05-29-2006, 03:18 AM Are teacher's unions to blame for zero tolerance?
Dr.Doom 05-29-2006, 04:25 AM Fu*k the world. Im tired of it. you have to please everyone.

teachers unions are responsible for most of america's ills/;)

Intersting thesis-honestly though-did the unions have something to do with that? It doesnt sound right but anything's conceivable...

I really don't know because this happened in PA, but in my view it is best to just blame the teachers unions, in California..
Kittilicious 05-29-2006, 06:54 PM It's getting to the point that I am afraid to leave the house... I might just step on something that will piss someone off.

Please don't bypass the curse filters. It'll get you warned in the future.
Monster 05-30-2006, 04:22 PM Don't confuse the teachers' union with the school board. I'm betting it was the latter, and not the former, that is responsible for the zero-tolerance policy (which is really damn stupid, I agree).
GROFF200 05-30-2006, 05:44 PM I think this ultra-PC movement in public schools is going to really cost the country in the long run.
Who knows how many brilliant scientists, engineers, and future teachers are begin shut out of opportunities over stuff like this.

I don't.. I won't..
Back to topic: As I said some time back, The BERLIN WALL has been dismantled in Eastern Europe....but IS being RE-BUILT PIECE-BY-PIECE IN THE ALLEGEDLY DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY THAT IS CALLED THE U.S.A.!!! :( :not:
Feenix566 05-30-2006, 05:57 PM In an indirect way, the teachers' unions are partially responsible for this. If there was competition among schools, then administrators would be less likely to abuse their power in this way. Teachers' unions prevent competition among schools by opposing private school voucher programs.
Monster 05-30-2006, 06:58 PM That's another topic for another thread, though.

Yes it is.
Please come here to debate why government unions bite:

doesn't chocolate have caffeine in it?
So are kids not allowed to bring cupcakes in on thier b day??
Monster 05-31-2006, 02:01 PM At the rate we're going, sugar is going to be considered a stimulant.
Hell, it's only a matter of time before naps are considered stimulants.
angelone 05-31-2006, 03:56 PM Zero tolerance sucks, I agree. But chewing gum wasn't allowed in some classes when I was a child, some kids chew loud, make popping noises, and it is annoying when you are trying to learn. However, some allow chewing, if you keep your mouth closed. Also, you all seem to forget, authority, the teacher has some rights in her classroom. If she/he doesn't want something, then we need to respect her or his rules. He/she is the TEACHER, not vise versa. We learn from teachers. Some are cookoo, some are not, but doesn't that make the world spin
Monster 05-31-2006, 04:58 PM Chewing gum being banned in classrooms because it's a nuisance and gets stuck under desks (which is frikkin DISGUSTING if you hit it with your knee) is one thing.
Chewing gum being banned because it contains caffine is stucking fupid.
angelone 06-01-2006, 12:36 AM The idea is, don't let them see what your chewing, I think the schools have lost thier minds, they have lost touch with the Kids and the education process. Our constitution said, freedom to express, it doesnt have age limits, or any limits. Just dont be hurting someone else. So what does freedom mean now.
Keylia 06-01-2006, 10:57 AM Suspension is too much. How are the kids going to learn if they're suspended? It's more like a holiday than anything to some kids.
If I was the teacher, I'd make the kids scrape the gum from under the desks and chairs if they were caught with gum in class. Haha, that'd teach them not to stick it under their seats.
