View Full Version : What can be done?
Mystlet 03-26-2006, 06:31 PM Why does the shoutbox move with irregularity?
It lags & hiccups.
Is it because of images posted there, or the extensive log it keeps?
What can be done, if anything?
maybe it's a FF thing?
anyone?
No_Brakes 03-26-2006, 08:33 PM Not just FF, I don't think.
It happens to me too, and I'm using IE. (I can't use whatever browser AOL's got when I'm here because I keep getting kicked offline.)
I haven't noticed it. :hmm:
Mystlet 03-26-2006, 08:37 PM I haven't noticed it. :hmm:
Do your posts appear as soon as you enter them?
probably has to do with the activity level of the chat.
does it lag with a lot of ppl on at once?
Mystlet 03-26-2006, 08:50 PM its worse sometimes than others, but its always slow. :(
Do we have too many users? Do we need multiple shoutboxes? :eek3:
No_Brakes 03-26-2006, 08:53 PM There's really not a whole lot of people in the shoutbox at any one time, at least not that I can recall. I've seen far more populated chat rooms elsewhere.
Maybe it has to do with the total number of people on DA at any given time, that could potentially be in the shoutbox?
Mystlet 03-26-2006, 09:01 PM Add to that, I've been having shoutbox posts disappear...I post them, but they never show. :(
Do your posts appear as soon as you enter them?opps I guess I lied.
Yes, it does do that. :(
Mystlet 03-26-2006, 09:11 PM We have sinned, and the Shoutbox Gods punish us. :(
Java_man 03-26-2006, 10:35 PM I use IE and sometimes its fine, sometimes there is lag and sometimes the lag is so bad it times-out
i guess the sb needs more fiber for regularity.

It leaves a lot of waste product, so I don't think that's really the issue. Maybe there's a blockage. Or perhaps, the SB is lactose intollerant. :|
maybe it irritable bowel syndrome... :|
Mystlet 03-26-2006, 10:48 PM maybe it irritable bowel syndrome... :|
Irritable Board Syndrome. :hmm:

They're probably timing out. Have you tried refreshing the main page to see if they appear upon reloading?
Also, the SB does lag when images are present, so that is definitely a factor. I personally want to see image posting disabled for the shoutbox, but I'm not sure if there's an easy way to accomplish that.
No_Brakes 03-26-2006, 11:06 PM You probably could disable image posting easily enough, but then we'd probably lose the smileys too. :(
Monster 03-26-2006, 11:11 PM Yeah, IIRC, it's disabling all vB code or keeping it all.
We have sinned, and the Shoutbox Gods punish us. :(:(

I have to refresh frequently to get them to appear. And then they'll show up along with several others.
If the images really are a factor, asking members to refrain from posting images in the shoutbox may help. Not being able to use smilies and pics won't kill anyone.
no don't take away smilies! :(
fat mike 03-27-2006, 09:00 PM Why does it not surprise me she would say that?
you shouldn't have to refresh, it runs on AJAX, it refreshes itself
lag prob does have to do with how hard the site is getting hammered
