View Full Version : Worst covers?
cellularsociety 03-20-2006, 01:17 AM As below but the covers that make you want to hurt small animals.
All saints - Under the bridge
Westlife - Seasons in the sun
Daphne and celeste (sp?) - schools out

Snouter 03-20-2006, 03:03 PM Guns & Roses' Sympathy For The Devil was a major let down. Slash didn't seem particular good at jamming in that one and Axl's vocals were kind of irritating.
igofast 03-20-2006, 06:12 PM I HATE red red wine by UB40. I could come up with a huge list, but that one just popped into my head.
Mystlet 03-20-2006, 06:56 PM I wouldn't know where to start, it's almost daily I hear something that ticks me off.
h2g2Fan 03-20-2006, 07:15 PM Every time bands try to cover The Cure, it turns out badly.
GanjaFreebird 03-20-2006, 09:46 PM 1. Britney Spears - "I Love Rock and Roll" and "Satisfaction"
2. Any Little Richard or Fats Domino cover by Pat Boone
3. The Carpenters - Any Beatles cover
4. Limp Bizkit- "Behind Blue Eyes"
5. Avril lavigne -"Knocking on heavens door" (Also, I agree with George Harrison that G&R cover of that song wasn't that great either)
6. Manferd Man Earth Band- Blinded By The Light
cellularsociety 03-20-2006, 10:24 PM Britney Spears - "I Love Rock and Roll"
Oh god I forgot that one. That was just wrong. :nonono:
Also: sheryl crow ought to be imprisoned for her cover of sweet child o' mine.
Mark
GanjaFreebird 03-21-2006, 10:33 AM Also: sheryl crow ought to be imprisoned for her cover of sweet child o' mine.
I don't think it was bad at all. As much as I dislike most new music from the last 20 years or so, Sheryl Crow is great.
boedicca 03-21-2006, 11:32 AM I'm surprised that nobody has yet mentioned the Supreme Worst Cover of All Time:
William Shatner's rendition of "Lucy in the Sky (with Diamonds)"
igofast 03-21-2006, 12:54 PM 1. Britney Spears - "I Love Rock and Roll"
When asked in an interview why she covered that song, she responded "I've always loved pat benatar."
boedicca 03-21-2006, 01:00 PM When asked in an interview why she covered that song, she responded "I've always loved pat benatar."
Which is why she did not toruture Pat by covering one of her songs.
;)
I don't know 03-21-2006, 01:23 PM I heard a techno version of a Bob Dylan song once, that did make me want to hurt small animals. In fact, even thinking about it :vomit:
GanjaFreebird 03-21-2006, 02:05 PM I'm surprised that nobody has yet mentioned the Supreme Worst Cover of All Time:
William Shatner's rendition of "Lucy in the Sky (with Diamonds)"
I agree.
When asked in an interview why she covered that song, she responded "I've always loved pat benatar."
:p I guess her knowledge in music isn't much better than the quality of her music.:D
Which is why she did not toruture Pat by covering one of her songs.
Her cover of "Satisfaction" is even worse than my WORST performance of that song...after all the strings on my guitar went completely out of tune and my voice suddenly lost 80% of it's range because I was sick at the time. As much as I hated myself for playing my worst, I was glad that it still wasn't nearly as bad as Britney's "best" after listening to the recording of my show.
cellularsociety 03-21-2006, 07:47 PM I'm surprised that nobody has yet mentioned the Supreme Worst Cover of All Time:
William Shatner's rendition of "Lucy in the Sky (with Diamonds)"

Also: sheryl crow ought to be imprisoned for her cover of sweet child o' mine.
Mark I thought that was pretty good actually...:hmm:
Diavolo 03-23-2006, 09:52 PM Blink 182's complete and utter butchering of "Another Girl, Another Planet" by the Only Ones, which is only one of my favourite songs of all time. :( :not: :nonono:
I can't believe they had the audacity to even attempt to do that song any justice, and I'm even more pissed that it's on the Greatest Hits album, which means they'll probably release it as a single and a whole bunch of idiots will think they wrote it. :not:  :nonono:
BTW, I kinda like The Shat's covers. :o :D
R.Tricky 03-23-2006, 11:48 PM Every time bands try to cover The Cure, it turns out badly.
311 did a good job. It wasnt anything special but it wasnt bad.
Ironweed 03-24-2006, 12:03 AM 1. Britney Spears - "I Love Rock and Roll"
Must be karma for Joan Jett's awful version of Road Runner. :nice: Though, to be candid, it probably doesn't rate worst of all time. Just that the original is a favorite of mine, and her version is sub-par. And if I want it covered, it should be by a drunk Johnny Rotten babbling about how he can't remember the words. :p
igofast 03-24-2006, 01:57 PM 311 did a good job.
If by good you mean god awful. :nonono:
Anything by Michael Bolton. :P
Diavolo 03-24-2006, 02:26 PM Anything by Michael Bolton. :P
Yeah, he sucks hard! His version of White Christmas cracks me up, though. :D
Sweet Dreams - Marilyn Manson
Imagine - A Perfect Circle
Darling Nikki - Foo Fighters
Faith - Limp Bizkit
Video Killed the Radio Star - Presidents of the United States of America
I don't know 03-25-2006, 05:47 AM No one's mentioned Helmut Lotti so far. Dunno how to interpret that :|
cellularsociety 03-26-2006, 06:48 PM Video Killed the Radio Star - Presidents of the United States of America
I quite liked that.
Mark
today I heard, I think, a christian aguilera (or some girly singer like that) cover of nothing else matters, metallica, lol.
boedicca 03-26-2006, 07:55 PM Slight detour:
Me First & The Gimme Gimmes do hysterical punk covers of a great variety of songs - i.e. Stand by Your Man.
CowPunk 03-26-2006, 08:17 PM No one's mentioned Debby Gibson's I Think We're Alone Now?
BTW, Nimoy did Lucy in the Sky. Shatner did Rocket Man. :D
No_Brakes 03-26-2006, 08:19 PM I would have, but I think the nausea potential was just a bit too much for me. ;)
CowPunk 03-26-2006, 08:22 PM Yeah, the Gibber has that effect on people.
No_Brakes 03-26-2006, 08:26 PM Apparently William Shatner's well-versed in the art of crappy covers:

*gulp*
CowPunk 03-26-2006, 08:32 PM It's often been pointed out that he sounds like he's running after an ice cream truck in that one. :)
His (melo)dramatized rendition of Rocket Man on the sci-fi awards has to take the cake, although Nimoy's Proud Mary is close contender.
boedicca 03-26-2006, 08:32 PM No one's mentioned Debby Gibson's I Think We're Alone Now?
BTW, Nimoy did Lucy in the Sky. Shatner did Rocket Man. :D
Au Contraire, Shatner did an excruciatingly painful rendition of Lucy In The Sky. Nimoy's most famous awful song is "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins".

CowPunk 03-26-2006, 08:42 PM Mae West's Twist & Shout's also pretty legendary. I forget the Sebastian Cabot classic on the Golden Throat collection, but I can check the Rhino catalogue.
How 'bout Mrs. Miller's Downtown?
boedicca 03-26-2006, 08:46 PM That's pretty bad - but not as horrid as Madonna's "American Pie" (not that the original could be classified as a listening pleasure in the first place).
cellularsociety 03-26-2006, 10:13 PM today I heard, I think, a christian aguilera (or some girly singer like that) cover of nothing else matters, metallica, lol.
You are joking right? Please tell me you're joking! Oh god that's just so very wrong. *cries*

CowPunk 03-26-2006, 11:14 PM Some kind of mention should be made of Prussian Blue's covers of... well, anything. :barf:
GanjaFreebird 03-26-2006, 11:31 PM No one's mentioned Debby Gibson's I Think We're Alone Now?
I agree!!
Some kind of mention should be made of Prussian Blue's covers of... well, anything.
LOL, their mom was too busy teaching them to hate Jews and Blacks, instead of making sure they get singing and music lessons, and since the girls obviously don't have any natural music talent or abilities...it's interesting that ANYBODY can even listen to them...even if we forget about the issue of racism, musically they make Ashley Simpson look like Janis Joplin:p .
Just a question, would you take Prussian Blue (or their producers) to court if they ever tried to cover any of your songs? I know I would...:)
CowPunk 03-26-2006, 11:42 PM I'd be too busy laughing my ass off.
GanjaFreebird 03-26-2006, 11:57 PM I'd be too busy laughing my ass off.
LOL, PB's singing out of key is bad as it is, but they would also destroy the song by playing the wrong chords to it (it is very unlikely that they have enough musical talent to get the right chords to any of your songs)...and don't know about you, but I personally wouldn't find it funny if they ruined something I created AND made money of it, even if only off mosly deaf, mentaly ill rednecks:p .
1) Debbie (Deborah) Gibson did NOT sing I Think We're Alone Now. That was Tiffany!!!!!
2) Bif Naked is the one who has recently done a cover of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters. She even filmed the music video in the same way as Metallica's version.
Snouter 03-27-2006, 01:58 AM Metallica doing Sabbath covers (Hole in the Sky and Iron Man) on VH1 a few minutes ago. My God, that Metallica guy can't sing. Actually the only competent musican seems to be the lead guitarist.
cellularsociety 03-27-2006, 07:41 PM Fair enough... but why would you need to be a good singer to do Sabbath covers? ;)
Mark
CowPunk 03-27-2006, 10:14 PM 1) Debbie (Deborah) Gibson did NOT sing I Think We're Alone Now. That was Tiffany!!!!!
I stand corrected, sir. :nice:
IIRC, Debbie G. did do a terrible cover of The Locomotion, which, TBF, is a terrible song in it's own right.

No kidding. I feel dismayed now :(
Bad covers...well most of them that I can think of have been covered.
Many bad covers can also be found on American Idol, if those count :hmm:

Sorry - you're wrong about that one: http://bitzi.com/lookup/HAIJL2JAUXBQK6G2OCVTGPIMRGXQ4PIC
Kylie also covered it.

I'm not convinced yet. Was it a B-side or something? 'cause I can't find it.

RightWingZealot 03-28-2006, 09:52 AM Hah. Debbie G.
She's awsome. I mean, I hated her music, but I love the fact that she went around New York with a camera and asked people if they knew who she was.
I love a gal who can laugh at herself. :P
igofast 03-28-2006, 12:52 PM Cowpunk, I'm almost certain CCC is correct, debbie never did the loco-motion.
CGord 04-27-2006, 12:21 AM Winger - Purple Haze
Smashing Pumpkins - Never Let Me Down Again
Now, for good covers, go to http://www.beatallica.org. :D
CowPunk 04-27-2006, 01:43 PM We really should've stopped the thread after Guns 'n Rose's Knockin' on Heaven's Door, 'cuz nothing could even conceivably be worse.
GanjaFreebird 04-27-2006, 01:47 PM We really should've stopped the thread after Guns 'n Rose's Knockin' on Heaven's Door, 'cuz nothing could even conceivably be worse.
It sucks, but it wouldn't sound nearly as bad if one hasn't heard the original version or even Clapton's cover.
G&R are much better when they do original music.
GanjaFreebird 04-27-2006, 01:50 PM On the other hand, a band full of mediocre and shitty original music, REO Speedwagon had a GREAT live cover of Chuck Berry's "Little Queenie".
RightWingZealot 04-27-2006, 01:51 PM I think they got much better since Axl Rose stopped singing...
Or whatever that screeching thing he did was..
Im still not sure why Matt Sorum played with them..
oh yeah.. it was probably money.
GanjaFreebird 04-27-2006, 01:58 PM Axl Rose
I don't like his singing for the most part, but they DID have great songs and Slash is one of the best guitarists from the 1980's, no questions about it.
RightWingZealot 04-27-2006, 02:05 PM yeah, I have to confess I think they were pretty awsome musicians.
I liked his voice better when he stopped the screeching thing ala "sweet child of mine" and started more with the vocal stylings that Lane Staley later ripped off.
GanjaFreebird 04-27-2006, 02:13 PM Agree, and while I don't like the vocals on it, "Sweet Child of Mine" is an AMAZING song musically at least, and the guitar solo is just legendary.
On today fm in ireland they have these really awful irish singer songwriters (god you all are lucky that you don't have to put up with this celebration of mediocrity that irish people have with singer songwriters) come into the studio every week and they cover a pop song because they think they are better then the people who did the pop song originally
all the crap ends up sounding the same though
and then it all ends with the same 3 people texting in to say how great it was and how it was better then the original.
i would put all those songs down as being the worst covers
CGord 04-27-2006, 10:30 PM We really should've stopped the thread after Guns 'n Rose's Knockin' on Heaven's Door, 'cuz nothing could even conceivably be worse.
Don't make me upload that Winger cover. I'll do it.
Guns & Roses' Sympathy For The Devil was a major let down. Slash didn't seem particular good at jamming in that one and Axl's vocals were kind of irritating.
a couple (don't recall how many) of the solos in that remix were not Slash, but Paul Tobias, a childhood friend of axl's, taking the place of Gilby Clarke.
