What are your faves? What makes a good cover for you?
Good cover for me maintains the spirit of the original but makes it the covering bands' own too.
G'N'R - knocking on heavens door
Suicide machines - end of the world as we know it
Chillis - Higher ground
Black Crowes - hard to handle
There are so many...

One of the most notable ones is Vanilla Fudge's version of You Keep Me Hangin' On. It took a light weight song and transformed it into a very heavy masterpiece.

I think Johnny Cash's cover of Trent Reznor's "hurt" was the best cover I have heard..
Not because it was the best "song" per say, but because he did it so much better than Trent Reznor did.

Don't know if these are the BEST covers, but they're some of my favourites:
Elliott Smith - Because
Elliott Smith - Thirteen
Sid Vicious - My Way
Flaming Lips - Nobody Told Me
The Slits - I Heard It Through the Grapevine
Clem Snide - Beautiful
Cast - The Seeker
Smith - Baby It's You
Johnny Cash - I'm on Fire
The Fall - Lost in Music
NIN - Dead Souls
Pet Shop Boys - Always on My Mind
The Vandals - So Long, Farewell
The Cramps - Strychnine
Frente! - Bizarre Love Triangle (though the voice is a little sickening)
I like Cat Power's covers. She's got a whole album full of them.
Most of the stuff on the Ramones' 'Acid Eaters'
Everything by the Detroit Cobras!
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, especially:
- Nothing Compares 2U
- The Longest Time
- Rocket Man
:D
That's all I can think of right now. :p

Superb. Check out the Headcoatees cover of Strychnine,( may I suggest Limewire?) also Sid doing Eddie Cochran's 'Something Else'
Armitage Shanks covering The Buzzcocks 'Time's Up'...pretty obscure, but excellent
Pistols......Johnny B Goode/Roadrunner.
Pistols.......No Fun.
UK Subs...She's Not There
Slits...I heard It Through The Grapevine
Golant Pistons............Friday On My Mind
The Dickies....Nights In white Satin
eventhough I hate the band, faith by limp buscit was great.

I love 'Something Else'! :nice:
Will definitely check out the Armitage Shanks cover if I can find it!
Your post made me think of another favourite: Anti-Nowhere League - Streets of London. :D
Cat power: Wonderwall (only one I've heard of hers, I'll be sure to check out some more)
Such a great cover! Her versions of Phil Phillips' 'Sea of Love' and the Velvet Underground's 'I Found a Reason' (totally stripped down and almost unrecognisable!) are definitely worth a listen as well.

Just heard Any Timmon's version of Little Wing. Not only was it much better than Jimi's version, he actually added some of the little pattern contained of Claptons cover of it for the outro, the bolero type thing.
