Having done guitarists to death... ;)

Who are the bassists that do it best?

I'll start:

Steve Harris (of Iron Maiden) - I'm sure that guy has extra fingers!
Flea
Jack Bruce
Cliff Burton

More to follow...

Who are the bassists that do it best?

Here are a couple...

Billy Sheehan - Steve Vai proclaimed him the best in rock music
Chris Squire - Listen to any Yes song
John Patitucci - Fusion stuff
Jack Casady - The Airplane
Phil Lesh - Brilliant co-developer of the rhythmically complex Dead music
Tim Bogert - Probably the most influencial to me, amazing, aggressive style
Geezer Butler - Unbelievable finger style
Greg Lake - of ELP
Andy West - Saw him live with one of the best guitarist ever, Steve Morse
Geddy Lee - Gotta mention this guy after seeing some show on DVD not long ago
Tony Levin - Amazing
John Paul Jones - 1 mistake made in show I saw live
The late John Entwistle - 0 noticable mistakes made in show I saw live
The late Jaco - he did jazz where making mistakes are happy accidents
Ric Fierabracci - definitely one of the best bassists I have seen live
Jonas Hellborg - Incredible, saw him with John McLaughlin. He later played with the most amazing guitarist in history, Shawn Lane.

claypool is an amazing bass player technically but his style annoys me after a while.

I'm fond of Ron Carter, Ray Brown & Jamaldeen Tacuma as well, as far as folks that haven't been mentioned go.
