View Full Version : Stupid assed Crash won best picture instead of Brokeback
Jay GW 03-06-2006, 03:25 AM Stupid Crash. Spike Lee called and wants the themes to all his movies back.
How much more proof do we need that Hollywood hates gays?
Frankly, Ang Lee didn't ask me, but I would have made one of the characters in Brokeback Mountain a Black. The story could have the subplot of racism in addition to trying to hide their relationship. That would have made a far more powerful film, but I guess they had to follow the story pretty closely and it doesn't say anything about them being Black.

Myrddin 03-06-2006, 06:16 AM I saw Crash, it was a good movie I thought.
Betrade 03-06-2006, 08:17 AM Hollywood doesn't hate gays. The very though of that concept is laughable.
Brokeback Mountain isn't a popular movie among the masses. It hasn't earned much at the box office either, relatively speaking. I think it came in at number 29 in earnings. It shouldn't win, because most people don't even want to see it, much less hold it up as a great film.

since when are "a film is popular" and "a film is good" synonymous ?

No good movies won this year, I wanted 40 year old virgin to win damnit :P
caddis 03-06-2006, 09:14 AM Strokejack Mounting won for best Director...which can be considered "best Film" as far as quality to some
I don't know 03-06-2006, 09:21 AM since when are "a film is popular" and "a film is good" synonymous ?
Since when did "won an oscar" = "quality"?
spare change 03-06-2006, 12:04 PM they do not hate gays they nominated 3 gay movies

What the hell are you rambling on about? Hollywood hates gays? You base this on the gay cowboy moving not winning best movie? Yeesh....get a grip.

Yeah. That.

Crash domestic box office: $53,404,817
Brokeback Mountain domestic box office as of 3/4/06: $78,906,000
Not that that matters, but just to clarify.
I haven't seen Crash, but plenty of friends whose opinions I respect say it beats you over the head with its message over and over and very un-subtle-ly, which is one thing I can't stand in a movie. So I'm not anticipating liking it. Brokeback is great. I liked Munich a lot, too, however.

SwiftSloth 03-06-2006, 01:05 PM I thought Crash was an excellent movie. I would have voted for it well before Brokeback, and I would have voted Munich well before Crash. Does this mean I hate gays? Seriously, this title thread is absurd. Getting nominated enough is (supposed to be) an honor.
Also, Late, your numbers are kinda misleading. I.E.--Crash didnt have nearly the produciton or advertising budget that Brokeback did.
Matter of factly, Brokeback easily had triple and then some the budget of Crash. The triple probably = Ang Lee's salary though.

Actually ,Brokeback Mountian made 70 million [which makes it a major box office hit],Dukes Of Hazard made 80 million [Brokeback made more money at the box office than Marach Of The Penguins, which is regarded as a major hit].
And Betrade, most of what you say doesn't hold up when all the facts are counted [which seems to always be the case for conservatives].
One,no films loose money today,if they don't hit it big at the box office ,they make their money back through home video, cable, broadcast tv and the overseas market.
Two,most of the films that make money at the box office are basically garbage unfit ofr human consumption [Dukes Of Hazzard,Big Mama's House,Cheaper By The Dozen] appealing to lowbrows might make money ,but doesn't make great art.
The Oscars are an artistic award,so don't expect Van Desil to get one [at least until he gets tired of making money by appealing the the lowest common denominator and decides to act].
they do not hate gays they nominated 3 gay movies
Captoe was not a so-called "gay movie",in fact his sexual orentation played virtually no part in the film [Capote isn't a biopic].
I think Transamerica and Brokeback [and Capote ,Good Night and Good Luck,Crash and Munich] are much, much deeper than sexual orentation or anything else on the surface and basically say that dehumaniztion of any type is wrong and hurts all of us.

-H.ollyWood is one of the most liberal places in the country. they do not hate the gays. The gay mafia caused Bareback Mountain to lose.
By having 3 gay movies nominated they split the gay vote.
Just like ralph Nader took votes away from Al Gore in the first bush election TransAmerica and Capote were bleeding off votes for Bareback Mountain.
Alowing crash to slip in:nice:
TheLateGreat 03-07-2006, 12:08 AM ^TransAmerica wasn't nominated for best picture.
And transgender =/= gay

With all due resepct that is one of the most assinine posts I've ever read.
Once again, you obviously haven't seen Capote because Truman Captote's sexual orentation does not play a part in the film [you didn't even see him and his partner hold hands].
Capote is about the book In Cold Blood [and actually it's even way deeper than that] ,it is not about Truman Capote himself,it is not a biopic.
And Transamercia was not nominated for Best Picture [plus as TLG pointed out transgender is not the same as gay],so you are factually incorrect.
Truth Teller 03-07-2006, 04:37 PM H.ollyWood is one of the most liberal places in the country.
As George Clooney said in accpetance speech it is a good thing that Hollywood is "out of touch".
That when everyone else ignoted AIDS and civil rights liberals didn't and that Hattie Mc Daniel [Gone With The Wind] won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress when Jim Crow segregated her from the rest of society and Clooney added "I'm proud to be part of the Academy for that reason alone".
So yeah,Clooney is right, being "out of touch" is not a bad thing.:nice:
beatlebabe 03-07-2006, 04:43 PM I wouldn't mind getting "in touch" with George Clooney :hiya:
TheLateGreat 03-07-2006, 04:44 PM I wouldn't mind getting "in touch" with George Clooney :hiya:
I wouldn't mind getting naked with George Clooney and rolling around in bed with him for 72 hours.
Oh, that's what you meant by "in touch," just in a more subtle, classy way than my trashy ass. Well, carry on.
Truth Teller 03-07-2006, 04:46 PM I wouldn't mind getting "in touch" with George Clooney :hiya:
Well, they say he's dating Terri Hatcher :hitit:,so if we could get them seperated you can win over George and I can win over Terri.

Please,it was just another stupid "first time I got laid" Holywood movie that had nothing to do with the reality of the first time that anybody got laid under any circumstances.
"40 Year Old Virgin" really wasn't that much different [or much better] than Porky's.

Hey, thanks for saving me the bother of seeing it. :nice:
Of course it won. The DaColbert Code is always accurate.
igofast 03-08-2006, 06:46 PM Since when does a comedy have to be realistic to be funny?
DWolfman 03-08-2006, 07:01 PM Hey, thanks for saving me the bother of seeing it. :nice:
My pleasure!
Wouldn't want anyone
to have to explain it to you.

Truth Teller 03-08-2006, 07:28 PM Since when does a comedy have to be realistic to be funny?
It doesn't have to be,but that helps.
igofast 03-08-2006, 07:35 PM That's something I'm going to have to disagree with, the best comedies of all time are absolutely unrealistic.
Super Troopers
Stripes
Pricess Bride
Anchorman
Airplane!
Caddyshack
Monty Python (take your pick which one)
Pee Wee's Big Adventure
The Jerk
Vacation
Animal House
Etc......
In fact the only one that I can think of that IS based in reality is Spinal Tap and that's only because the ridiculous things that happen in that movie actually happen to touring rock bands.
Jay GW 03-09-2006, 12:53 AM that had nothing to do with the reality of the first time that anybody got laid under any circumstances.
How many first time getting laid stories have you heard?
Truth Teller 03-09-2006, 06:19 PM How many first time getting laid stories have you heard?
More than you can sake a stick at.
In fact,I'd say the "first time I got laid" flim that was the closest tot eh reality of most people I know [not myself] was Amercian Pie.
Even then the funniest part of the movie had nothing to do with anybody's reality.
igofast 03-09-2006, 06:21 PM That movie sucked. Apparently "realistic*" movies about losing virginity = not funny. unrealistic = funny.
*That movie was far from realistic.

I can't aruge with Spinal Tap.
Look, comedy is the most subjective of the arts [all of which are subjective] you either find something funny or you don't and Steve Carell has yet to impress me with anything he does[including the -in my view- overrated The Office].
The fact is most "first time I got laid" films engage in toliet jokes that I mght have found funny when I was a teenager ,but I'm not a teenager anymore.
Based in reality?
How about Sam Kinnison in Back To School?
Hasn't everyone had a instructor who flew off the handle?
igofast 03-09-2006, 06:31 PM Back to school? Realistic? You've got to be kidding.
Truth Teller 03-09-2006, 07:41 PM Back to school? Realistic? You've got to be kidding.
Not the whole movie, but Sam Kinnison.
