By placing a photon in a quantum superposition of running and not running the search algorithm, the team managed to get the answer even when the photon did not run the search algorithm.

Unfortunately the computer cannot be scaled up so that it can do anything more useful, like guessing which horse will win the Grand National or calculating the correct lottery numbers.

Holy crap man! I'd like to see where this is 50 years from now.

Thats not quite how it will work. The computer will work super fast but because it works on the quantum level there will be a risk of error (uncertainty) so the computation will be run several times then the average answer given. But even when required to run a computation multiple times it will still be much faster than any computer today. I am not sure how even military grade encryption will be able to withstand it.
