A kid has been expelled for doodling his own initials on his own paper.

It's no small wonder our public schools are abysmal failures.

A 16-year-old boy has been expelled from his far northwest suburban high school for doodling what school officials say is a gang symbol in his notebook.

Members of the McHenry Community High School District 156 school board voted Tuesday to expel student Derek Kelly from McHenry East Campus High School for the rest of the school year, according to Derek's mother, Kathy Kelly.

The sketch showed the letters "D.L.K" in the middle of a cross with a spider web in one corner and a crown on top. School officials allegedly told Kathy Kelly the letters stood for "Disciples Latin King," referring to the Latin Kings and Latin Disciples street gangs.

But Kelly said those are also the initials of her son, whose full name is Derek Leon Kelly.

McHenry East Principal Dave Moyer would not comment specifically on Derek's case Wednesday, but he said: "The school district takes a very strong stance on gangs. The policy reflects that and our practices reflect that."

Derek made the sketch in his school planner on Jan. 3 while serving an in-school suspension for taking a bathroom break without permission, his mother said. Two days later, he was expelled for 10 days prior to Tuesday's board meeting....

When I was in school, I was taken to the principal's office because they thought that Metallica and Slayer logos were racist symbols.

When I was in grade school, one could be reprimanded for yelling "Cheeseburger" after the bell rang to signal the end of recess. But we could write our initials on our notebooks WITHOUT FEAR!

The schools in the USA suck. They are the worst in the civilized world.

And we can thank leftists and Unions for it.

If it was up to you guys there would be no schools, just what, maybe indoctrination centers where kids are forced not to question anything, they wouldn't be taught any valuable skills, like critical thought for instance.

Then Bush would have got 100% of the vote.

We already have this - but controlled by the Lathered-up Left.

Then Bush would have got 100% of the vote.

It is rather sad, but quite telling, that the Lefties cannot appreciate the Constitution and the fact that we are a free society. Is our system perfect - hardly?

I suggest you read "Death by Government" for a reality check on what totalitarianism really is.

I was suspended, arrested, and cited my senior year of high school for "disorderly conduct by posessing an offensice calculator program." Seriously, no joke - cops and everything. It wasn't even racist!!

It was a good school other than the hypersentitive *******s.

If a teacher in this day & age is more worried about a kid's initials, than getting stuck in the abdomen with a switchblade, I'd say things are improving. :hmm:
