If Stevie had lived, he would have been the greatest guitarist ever. I mean, don't get me wrong; I love Eric and Mark Knopfler is right up there as well, but Stevie was the shit.

View Full Version : I submit, for your consideration.... Bear Stories 02-20-2006, 03:29 AM If Stevie had lived, he would have been the greatest guitarist ever. I mean, don't get me wrong; I love Eric and Mark Knopfler is right up there as well, but Stevie was the shit. Dreamscapist 02-20-2006, 06:55 AM SRV is IT. Bear Stories 02-20-2006, 07:00 AM Agreed! Each time I listen to Rivera Paradise, I just think, wow, how can this guy be this good? Dreamscapist 02-20-2006, 07:22 AM It's because he lived the music....the music was him. A long time ago I went to a bar in Austin called Club Foot to see the Thunderbirds, who were just starting to get airplay. Opening for them was the much lesser-known band of guitarist Jimmie Vaughn's little brother: Double Trouble. I was awestruck, and became an instant fan. Price of admission: two bucks. And a couple of years later I caught Stevie playing lead for David Bowie's Serious Moonlight tour...talk about an amazing show. Austin has a bronze statue of Stevie at Auditorium Shores. He is more revered there than in his birthplace of Dallas it seems. Bear Stories 02-20-2006, 07:38 AM Yeah, and poor Jimmy, (who is fine in his own right, yeah?) I remember seeing Stevie back in the day, big black hat, shaking his head like he couldn't really believe how good he was. And just when he was finally getting it! I remember the day..... the first anouncement was that Eric had been on the helicopter, and then, twenty minutes later, it was known that it was Stevie. How do you feel about that? Not Eric, but Stevie. Bear Stories 02-20-2006, 07:44 AM .... Austin has a bronze statue of Stevie at Auditorium Shores. He is more revered there than in his birthplace of Dallas it seems. I didn't know that! How cool is that, man? That's cooler than you and me put together! :nice: Dreamscapist 02-20-2006, 07:57 AM I didn't know that! How cool is that, man? That's cooler than you and me put together! :nice: It's a fine statue: Stevie in trademark flat-brimmed hat and a poncho, guitar slung across his back, and his right hand posed at his waist in an open grip that allows the faithful to place flowers there. About the crash, it would have been awful to lose Eric that way, too, but definitely not as awful, as Stevie was on the rise, and had so much ahead of him. Reminds me of how glad I am that then-Crickets bassist Waylon Jennings gave up his plane seat to the Big Bopper. Bear Stories 02-20-2006, 08:13 AM Wow, I didn't know that about Waylon and Richie. And it was tough for me when Stevie died. I mean, I was glad that it wasn't Eric, but at the same time, I wished maybe it was, yeah? The next time I'm in Austin, (after I roll around in the blue-bonnets), I'll go and place lillies in his hand. Dreamscapist 02-20-2006, 08:21 AM Wow, I didn't know that about Waylon and Richie. Bear Stories 02-20-2006, 08:25 AM You do that...and give me a holler while you're at it. I will, man, that would be very cool. And you can even go roll around in the flowers with me, if you want. ;) Dreamscapist 02-20-2006, 08:28 AM I will, man, that would be very cool. And you can even go roll around in the flowers with me, if you want. ;) I believe I'd be up for that. Bear Stories 02-20-2006, 08:33 AM Well, how can one even think about Hill Country in the Spring without rolling around in flowers, yeah? ;) Dreamscapist 02-20-2006, 08:48 AM It's one of the Texas rites of spring...just don't pick them. I miss little pigeon-toed boys who call me "ma'am", and tip their hats. Dreamscapist 02-20-2006, 09:31 AM Well, Texas misses you, darlin'. Bear Stories 02-20-2006, 09:53 AM And the "darlin''?
