View Full Version : Birthday Bling~
The Frog 02-18-2006, 01:10 AM Been saving up b'day money (two weeks from now) and some tax return extra and got m'self (well the whole family will use it..) a dual deck VCR/DVD-Rec combo set for the entertainment center.
I held off buying recordable DVD deck until I could get one bundled in a deck with a VCR and with dubbing features. This way I can take all the stuff we've taped on the camera, and from VCR over the years and plunk it on a more permanent DVD. Plus there's that whole storage issue. Easy to use our RW DVD disks for taping...er...disking shows now.
Any one else have one of these? If so, how have you liked them?

I've never used one ... but have been thinking about getting one :nice: let us know who it works! ...
The Frog 02-18-2006, 05:52 PM Hooking it up tonite.
I like what I've read on it so far.
The Frog 02-19-2006, 12:42 AM OKay, I've hooked it up.
Right off the bat, without even firing it up, I like that:
It is replacing the VCR, DVD, and RF Swith Box I was having to use.
This means less power plugs in use.
This means less clutter.
This means one freaking connection to use both video formats.
It has way more connection options than either device it's replacing. S-video, Digital audio, Composite Video, etc.
Naturally, after I answered the basic 'will it play my movies and let me watch TV still' question, the first thing I had to try was to make a DVD of a VCR tape. I selected the most valuable and irreplaceable one we own- the Wedding Video. Our 10th anniversay is this August and we've only ever had the one copy of it. Now we have THREE.
I followed the manual and dubbed it from tape to DVD. Finalized the disk so it cna play elsewhere, and then took it to my PC to test. It played there fine using Power DVD viewer. Then I used DVD shrink to make a copy, which also works.
It has 6 video quality levels making a normal 1 layer DVD 1 o 6 hours in length. 6 hours is normal VHS quality. 3 hours is Super VHS quality, 2 is DVD and 1 is pretty much HD quality.
SO, so far I'm loving this thing.
More taped stuff to copy. Laters

Sweet! thanks for posting that. I didn't even think about the benefit of less plugs. Good point! :nice: .... glad to hear the dubbing (from VHS to DVD) is working!
The Frog 02-19-2006, 12:02 PM It dubs the other way too, but why I'd want to make a tape out of a disk I dunno...

For that Uncle that does not yet have a DVD palyer :) ... that's a cool feature though .... even though you'd probably never use it.
The Frog 02-19-2006, 06:09 PM In seriousness, yeah I can see it.
Your kids only have a VCR in the rumpus room and they want to see something you recorded off TV, but you recorded it to disk. So you kick the show you disked to tape for them.
