From: Human Resources Director

Subject: Feral Cats

Unfortunately, several issues have surfaced regarding feral cats at our location. Due to the new City Ordinance for feral cats some changes will need to occur. We understand that some of our caring employees have made major efforts to give the local feral cats a more comfortable life by feeding and nurturing them. However, the City of Petaluma is now placing strict guidelines on the care for feral cats. At the same time, another situation that has arisen regarding feral cats is surfacing this weekend.

This weekend, xxxxxxxx, Inc. has contracted to have some maintenance work done on the facility. Due to everyday buildup of dirt, webs, bird nests and the feeding areas of feral cats (which has gravitated close to the parameter of the building), we are having some areas power washed. The area’s to be washed are several of the overhangs of our buildings as well as the concrete areas; particularly where cats have been fed (the entrances to and from the buildings, 1320 & 1300). Painting of some interior walls in both buildings will also occur this weekend.

Due to health and safety concerns and continued cleanliness of the areas being power washed, effective immediately, feral cats must be fed, trapped and housed at least 25 yards from the exterior of the buildings.
LOL..25 yards will get you off the property

This issue must be resolved by March 31, 2006. If there is not a registered caretaker at the time, cats will no longer be able to be fed or housed at our location.

The guidelines are as follows:

All caretakers of feral cats within the City limits are required to register with Animal Services. A caretaker means any person or organization harboring or having in his/her or it’s possession..lol
Required Records for Commercial Kennels, Catteries, Feral Cat Colonies.

Keep available, on the permitted premises, records available for inspection by the Director. These records shall contain all of the following:

The name, current address, and telephone number of the owner/guardian of each animal at the kennel or cattery. The name, current address, and telephone number of the feral cat colony caretaker.
The date each animal entered the kennel, cattery or colony.
The reason for each animal being at the kennel or cattery, such as boarding, sale, breeding or grooming.
A description of each animal at the kennel at cattery, including age, breed, sex and color.
A current, valid rabies certificate for each animal over four months of age at the kennel, cattery or colony.
A valid spay/neuter certificate for each cat over age four months in the colony.
Keep results on premises for Feline FIV and Leukemia tests.

The application can be obtained at the following location:

City of Petaluma - Animal Shelter

Please address any questions to Human Resources and/or the City of Petaluma. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Ah, get thee to a cattery.

Cattery....I really like that word.

And at least they didn't propose a dish of antifreeze.
