View Full Version : Is SCSI a viable alternative for the home user?

My buddie has a couple 18.4G 10000 rpm seagate 80 pin scsi drives pulled from an old DOD server that he's not using. I ordered a couple 68-80 pin adapters and I found that you can get a really nice used adaptec scsi adapter on ebay. It seems that with refurbished drives like the one found here

SCSI is affordable to the average user if you know where to look.

I'm pretty stoked. I wonder how the performance will compare to my raptor.

SCSI for the home user? I dont see much point at all.. even for a modern audio/video geek like me.

I am guessing you will see speeds pretty close to your raptor drive.
SCSI drives tend to be more noisy..

It'll be fun to mess around with it. I've never played with scsi before, and it seems like the 80 pin drives can be found dirt cheap on pricewatch. Really, the most expensive thing seems to be the adapter.

Hey, is a single cable all that's needed for scsi RAID? I know you can put an assload of drives on a single cable with scsi, but that's about all I know about it.

yeah you can use a single cable

actually.. the speed of those drives will pro bably be less than your raptor..
I think ultra2 SCSi is only 80 gb

SCSI is fun stuff :)

I think your raptors are prolly better than OLD drives, but it is really fun to mess around with still.

I enjoy Betty's stuff though I don't always understand it-I like the Jerry rigging "We'll make this damned thing work" attitude he's got...

I'm a Marine communications tech. Jerry rigging is in my blood.:D

Yeah, I kind of figured that too, but now I'm down to one Raptor. The SATA connector broke on the 2nd one.

I figure two of the 10k scsi's in RAID should give me pretty good performance for now.:nice:

Too bad ya cant find some ultra320 drives.
That'd be sweet.

Sure I can. If you check pricewatch they can easily be had for as little as $65 for an 80 pin <20G. Prolly refurbished though, so there's a little risk involved.
