View Full Version : Police: Remains found may be Chandra Levy
u8nxprt 05-22-2002, 01:34 PM WASHINGTON (CNN) --Investigators looking into the disappearance of Chandra Levy are checking whether skeletal remains found in Washington's Rock Creek Park are that of the former intern, police sources said.
Police Chief Charles Ramsey said the remains were discovered by a man walking his dog about 9:30 a.m.
"Apparently, the remains have been there for a while," he said, adding there is "a possibility" the remains are those of a female. "My understanding is that the remains are not all in one location."
A law enforcement source said a skull was found.
"We're still processing the scene," Ramsey said.
Levy, a 24-year-old California native, was last seen on April 30, 2001, days after completing an internship with the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.
A search of Rock Creek Park last summer included the area where the remains were found, Ramsey said. The park is not far from where Levy lived in Washington.
The forested park, established in 1890, consists of roughly 2,000 acres and cuts through some of the city's more upscale neighborhoods. It includes jogging and bicycle paths.
"This is heavily wooded area, very easy to conceal something here," said Ramsey, who described the area as a "very difficult place to search."
Shortly after Levy disappeared, controversy swirled around U.S. Rep. Gary Condit, D-California.
Levy's family said she had a relationship with Condit, a 53-year-old married father of two. Condit publicly refused to say whether he had a romantic relationship with her, but police sources said he admitted to one during an interview.
Police handled Levy's disappearance as a missing persons case. Despite hundreds of tips and months spent searching city parks and buildings, they got no firm leads about what happened to Levy.
Police said they did not consider Condit a suspect in Levy's disappearance, and no suspects were ever named in connection with the investigation.
Levy's parents said they wanted Condit to meet with private investigators they hired to find their daughter, but he refused.
In March, hurt by the political fallout from the Levy case, Condit lost the California Democratic primary by a wide margin to state Assemblyman Dennis Cardoza.
An attorney for Levy's parents said Wednesday they would not immediately be making a statement.
Late last month, Levy's parents marked one year since her disappearance with interviews in which they talked about the heartache and hope they feel.
Susan Levy, the young woman's mother, said she doesn't react to incoming phone calls with much anticipation.
"I would say that I don't think I jump thinking that she's going to be on the other line, but I'm going to tell you ... that I still have faith and hope that Chandra will come back to us alive," she told CNN's Larry King. (Full story)
If it is her remains, it just opens up a whole other bag of questions...
Snouter 05-22-2002, 05:40 PM When I first heard this I assumed that the body was dumped there not long ago. It appears the report confirms it. The police dogs obviouisly would have found it in their initial search if this pedestrian found it so easily. Apparently some wild animal besides Congressman Condom was dragging that body around in the woods.
Dest98 05-22-2002, 06:01 PM Confirmed on local radio, remains are Levy's.
Foul Temptress 05-22-2002, 06:04 PM I pray they find the bastard that did this to her, and make him pay a long long time. I already heard comments about a Serial Killer..I mean come on, are they really thinking a Serial killer did this?
Gonna be another 'Ramsey' case.
u8nxprt 05-22-2002, 06:16 PM WASHINGTON (CNN) --The skeletal remains found in a Washington park Wednesday morning have been identified as those of former Washington intern Chandra Levy, a law enforcement source told The Associated Press.
Levy was last seen April 30, 2001, days after completing an internship with the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. She was 24 when she disappeared.
A man walking his dog and looking for turtles in the park found the remains about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Washington Police Chief Charles Ramsey told reporters. He said the discovery included a skull and that "bits and pieces" of what appeared to be women's clothing" were found.
He said early indications "weigh very heavily" that the remains are those of a woman.
"Apparently, the remains have been there for a while," Ramsey said. "My understanding is that the remains are not all in one location."
"We're still processing the scene," he said. Homicide investigators and a forensic pathologist were combing through the area. He said the search would likely extend into the night, and flood lights were being brought to the scene.
Police searched the roughly 2,820-acre Rock Creek Park last summer, including the area where the remains were found, Ramsey said. The park is not far from where Levy lived in Washington.
The park, which cuts through some of the city's more upscale neighborhoods, includes jogging and bicycle paths. Police said Levy had looked at a Web site that included information about the Klingle Mansion, an 1823 farmhouse now used as park offices, before she disappeared.
"This is heavily wooded area, very easy to conceal something here," said Ramsey, who described the area as a "very difficult place to search." He also said it was possible that the body could have been left in the park after the search.
Ramsey said the area where the remains were found were in an out-of-the way area in the park.
The case hurt Condit politically, and he lost a Democratic primary challenge in March.
Condit declined to comment Wednesday at the Capitol when asked about the park discovery.
Police chief says Levy's parents 'distraught'
Police handled Levy's disappearance as a missing persons case. Despite hundreds of tips and months spent searching city parks and buildings, authorities got no firm leads about what happened to Levy.
Police said they did not consider Condit a suspect in Levy's disappearance, and no suspects ever were named in connection with the investigation.
Levy's parents said they wanted Condit to meet with private investigators they hired to find their daughter, but he refused.
Ramsey said he talked by phone with Levy's parents several times Wednesday.
"They're upset. They're distraught. But we're keeping them informed," Ramsey said. He said the family was "still holding out hope."
Last month, Levy's parents marked one year since their daughter's disappearance with interviews in which they talked about their heartache and hopes.
Susan Levy, Chandra's mother, said she doesn't react to phone calls with much anticipation.
"I would say that I don't think I jump thinking that she's going to be on the other line, but I'm going to tell you ... that I still have faith and hope that Chandra will come back to us alive," she told CNN's Larry King in April. (Full story)
Lowtide 05-22-2002, 06:36 PM Wouldn't it suck if they found out Gary Condit wasn't the killer... poor Gary.
on the radio this morning, they said she was in her jogging clothes etc, and they figured she just tripped on a root and bumped her head, then died.. then her remains were scattered by a pack of wild dogs
The Frog 05-23-2002, 09:35 AM Yeah....and where do the pixies come into play?
They need a better story than that.
Lowtide- If they find for sure it wasn't him, then anyone that accused him should apologize, but as far as the political blowback that ruined his career, that's what he gets for having the affair to begin with, and for lying repeatedly and clumsily in public.
Baboon 05-23-2002, 09:38 AM With modern science the way it is, I am sure they'll be able to determine the cause of death. Finding the killer (if there is one) will be the challenge.
Hey, I watch "The New Detectives" on the Discovery Channel. That is some wild stuff!!

The probability that her death was due to medical reasons or accident is very remote. Suicide has a greater probability, but this act is an anathema for Jews to commit and there was no suicide note left.
More likely than not, Chandra was murdered - whether it was random or by someone she knew remains to be seen...
Her connection to Condit, however, is just so shady. Condit initially lied to the cops about his involvement with her. I have no doubt that there will be some interesting things that are revealed in this case.
The Frog 05-23-2002, 11:21 AM I’m with you on this one. Yes, I think she was offed, not an accident. Just doesn’t add up- the state of her home and belongings indicated she was getting ready to go somewhere and had future plans, so she’s not likely to have killed herself. Also, the behaviour of Condit during all this is extremely suspect.

I couldn't agree more. I am just leaving open the possibility that it was not a murder (per the news "story" Kraw heard on the radio).
I don't know...
Why is everyone willing to draw and quarter condit?
I agree his political fallout had little to do with ehr disapearance and more with his lying/affair...
But still, why is a natural accidental death 'highly unlikely.' I think a natural death, at this stage, is JUST as likely as her being offed...
Especially if Condit did it...and that they've searched his place and there was no trace evidence...
Foul Temptress 05-23-2002, 12:16 PM I dunno, I just feel that she was murdered. Condit may not have killed her, but he is guilty in some shape or form in my opinion. Yep things are just too 'shady' !
If evidence can prove otherwise, then I am up for it.. I just dont believe hs fell, hit her head and was ate by wolves. Odder has happened..but to much was going on before hand for me to believe that.

Have you been to DC?? Yeah, they have real problem with wolves.
:D

I am happy you support our system of innocent until rpoven guilty. So you're saying, in your eyes, condit is guilty, unless he can prove otherwise?
Foul Temptress 05-23-2002, 06:58 PM Honestly, I cant say Condit is guilty, I just find the whole ordeal funny. Yeah, I do believe he has some dealing with it. I do believe, someone had wanted her dead.
Example: During the Clinton mess, Monica Lewinsky came up dead, how many would believe Clinton had some dealing with it?????
Powerboss 05-24-2002, 02:23 AM To steal a line used by Democrats a couple times now, even last week;
WHAT DID GARY CONDOM KNOW AND WHEN DID HE KNOW IT???????????????
I agree Princess and Powerboss, that he SHOULD be investigated more thouroughly now, as he DOES have the motive. But to simply discount this as 'most likely him' is horrible.
