Hi! :) Just wanted to pick up this dusty journal and write a quick update...
Well, I just finished my first 3 months of SBS (School of Biblical Studies), and it was REALLY challenging, but I learned a lot, and I'm excited about starting the 2nd quarter!
I was told beforehand that this class involves a ton of work, and that I'd have no spare time, and... they weren't kidding! We're doing the Inductive bible study method, and there are 12 steps. We go book by book.... usually one book a week, but if they're small books, it can be 3 or even 4 in one week.
Here they are
1. Read the book out loud (in one sitting)
2. Make a list of paragraph titles (this means every single paragraph in the book has to have a 4 words or less title)
3. Make a draft horizontal chart (this is like an overview of the book, shown in a chart form, in sections)
4. Make a final horizontal chart (after the grader has checked the draft)
5. Write a 'BRI'. (Basic required information.... this is an essay style paper answering basic questions like, who is the author, when was it written, to whom was it written, what was the historical setting, main idea, reason written, etc.)
Phase 2 - (Exegesis)
6. Vertical charts - these are charts divided into sections of text (not all of it, but some key stuff) and in those charts, we have to do observations. For example, note things like "figure of speech", or "who", "place", etc, etc.
7. Do at least 4 interpretations. (still in the chart but outside the boxes of text) This means, asking an interpretive question like, "Why did the author say this?" etc.
8. Summarize the vertical chart.
9. Trace and summarize two themes. (this can be something like Jesus' love, faith, wisdom, or whatever... they give us the themes for each book.)
10. Final interpretive summary of themes (this is in an essay style)
11. Timeless truths - we have to find 2 timeless truths per chart, and give a reference for it.
12. Application -this is also an essay, on how at least one of the timeless truths of the book has renewed my mind, or changed my heart, or how it applies to my life.
And ALL that is due once a week! :eek3: But I've learned SO much already, and it's been great overall.
And I just took a test today on the New Testament (we're starting the Old Testament tomorrow) and we had to know the main idea, reason written and key verse for 25 books! And you'll never believe what I got on the test. (it truly was the grace of God) I took the test oral instead of written, and amazingly I got 100. (perfect score) :) So I was very happy about that.
Anyway, enough about that..... there are so many other things happening here, once again the people here at YWAM Kona are awesome.... and we've been having fun, even with the heavy intense workload.
I went in with 2 of my roommates (Lydia and Angie) to buy a cheap car for all 3 of us. It was 500 bucks, divided by 3! :D So now we can get off campus and go places we need to go, so we're really happy to have transportation. (seems like a silly thing, cause everyone has cars back home, but here many students don't have cars cause they're only here for a few months)
I was able to go back to the mainland for Christmas, (I had a week off) and it was great to rest and see my family. My parents moved to Rosarito Beach, Mexico, because they retired, so I spent Christmas there with them and my older sister.... and then a couple days later we had a second Christmas with a lot of my relatives, in San Diego. I hadn't seen some of my relatives in a long time, so it was really good to see them and catch up. :)
I don't have much more time at the moment cause I have work duty at 5 (its 4:40) but I just wanted to say hi to DA.... It sounds like all sorts of weddings are going on.... Man, what is going on around here? :p I'm happy for all of you, Dawn, Rayney, Beatle, and anyone else who is getting married soon!
I love you all....
God bless you,
cindy
ps- this didn't turn out to be 'quick'! sorry for the wordiness!
