Useless trivia for the day: For one season in the 1940s they were the Boston Redskins. They played their games at the field used by what was at that time the Boston Braves, (it used to even be called Braves Field, its now owned by Boston University) so the whole Indian type name seemed logical to the owners at the time, I guess. They moved to Washington after one year, and the Braves eventually wound up in Atlanta (via Milwaukee first).

Doubtless they wouldn't take a name like that nowadays, but I don't see anything particularly racist about it, in light of the above.

Personally, Iv never heard anyone complaing about the use of Native Americans used as sports teams. However if native americans want to take offense, they can. I think there dumb, but they can.

Of course not! They're a football team, so by their very nature, they're a metaphor for Imperialism. ;)

I don't find the Washington Redskins team name the least bit offensive but I do find it ironic that the team name "Redskins" exists, in of all cities, Washington DC.

Apparantly those overly sensitive PCers that have way too much spare time on their hands, are only worried about that kind of thing elsewhere in the country and excuse it for their team.

Just another example of hypocracy in Washington.

The Redskins are about as racist and inflammatory as the Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, and the San Francisco 49ers.
