View Full Version : How big a hard drive can my AMD Athlon handle?
wakeful 01-08-2006, 12:49 PM Hello everyone.
I have an Athlon 2700+ (2.16 GHz, 512 MB RAM), originally with a 120 GB HD, and with an extra 60 GB HD in use. The question is, how much more can it handle? I'm intending to buy an external HD to free up some space, I've been checking out a 250 GB one. Is it hopeful thinking that that would work smoothly? Oh, I don't plan to keep it connected all the time, just to plug it in for transfer occassionally without my system breaking down or slowing down too much.
Any info is greatly appreciated.
Shadoglare 01-08-2006, 01:49 PM The amount of hard drive that can be handled doesn't really have much to do with the processor (technically more a mix of bios and OS), but that 250gb should work fine - as an external drive it's probably not going to have as good of performance as the internals, but it'll work.
wakeful 01-08-2006, 02:00 PM Well, I'm just looking for compatible, versatile extra storage space. So there really shouldn't be any problems?
Thanks for answering.
Gibson 01-08-2006, 02:05 PM Nope, none at all :)
Shadoglare 01-08-2006, 02:10 PM Yeah, if I'm remembering correctly systems that have come out over probably the last five years or so can now handle *terrabytes* of hard drive space... your 250gb isn't gonna bother it at all...
wakeful 01-08-2006, 02:12 PM Thank you! It's been a while since I've bought an extra HD (and my then 6 GB PII couldn't handle the extra 60 GB I plugged in), so I just wanna make sure.
Oh, does anyone have any experience with chiliGREEN hard drives? I've been told they're reliable and unreliable by different people.
Gibson 01-08-2006, 02:16 PM Never heard of them :hmm: If possible, buy a harddrive made to be internal and purchase something along the lines of this. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817146307
wakeful 01-08-2006, 02:24 PM Hm, I'll have to do more research on that possibility :) What about Teac HDs?
Betty 01-09-2006, 10:44 AM I can't speak for their hard drives, but I had a TEAC CD burner once, and it was teh suck:not:. As far as I know though, TEAC doesn't manufacture HDD's, what you probably saw was an external HDD chassis manufactured by TEAC that had a regular brand HDD in it that TEAC contracted out to Western Digital/Maxtor/seagate/Fujitsu/Samsung/etc...
