View Full Version : How Much Do Cops Make In Your Town
Snouter 12-30-2005, 11:14 AM In between articles about various Hanukkah events around the area, and the fact that not one Black person showed up at a Kwanzaa event allegedly because of lack of interest, a local newspaper presented a list of their town's top money earners for the year.
The top top earners were all police officers except for two employees of the public education system.
Dogberry 12-30-2005, 11:23 AM Do they have to pay for their own bullets?
That might drastically reduce their income.:)
kellet 12-30-2005, 12:35 PM I've heard ads on the radio recruiting for LAPD that the starting salary is over $70k, so I would have to say more than that, but I don't know.
Snouter 12-30-2005, 12:39 PM Dude, take a guess.
Who picked $7 million? http://www.world-of-smilies.com/html/images/smilies/alien/alien3.gif
Snouter 12-30-2005, 05:28 PM I am the only one who guessed correctly so far. http://www.world-of-smilies.com/html/images/smilies/alien/alien385.gifhttp://www.world-of-smilies.com/html/images/smilies/alien/alienblinl.gif
Mystlet 12-30-2005, 05:54 PM Average salaries here run 55-65K/year.
i'd think between $45k-$60k here in my town...
Snouter 12-30-2005, 07:21 PM Something in their contracts allow them to really cash in with overtime hours. A police sergeant made $242,770, another made $203,825. A police officer made $174,447. Many more police officers and public school employees made well over a hundred grand. An English as a second language teacher made $102,108. http://www.world-of-smilies.com/html/images/smilies/alien/alien385.gif

While that may be fortunate for the parties involved, it certainly isn't indicative of what the majority of police make.
ResidentRice 12-30-2005, 07:32 PM Rookie LAPD cops are starting at just over 50 right now.
Gibson 12-30-2005, 10:34 PM Columbia Station has no police force

How much more do they get for overtime?
It seems totally insane that a cop can make a quarter million a year. If they rounded up hundreds of invaders and other criminals that would be one thing, but that is not the case. In some cases, the pension is based on this inflated total which adds to the insanity.
ResidentRice 12-31-2005, 04:40 AM I don't know where you're getting your info, or your statistics, but I would highly doubt that the vast majority of police officers get paid in the quarter-million dollar range. A few maybe, but most definitely not most.
Or else I'd be in the police academy and not wasting my time on DA.

They must have lowered it then, or the ad I heard on the radio was lying. It said the starting pay was over $70k. But that was in September of 2003.
ResidentRice 12-31-2005, 04:59 AM I think that was for cops who defected from other departments.
The figure I quoted was for rookie cops that I heard on the local news.
I know that the LAPD was vigorously recruiting cops from other areas to join the force with previous experience, so the 70 figure doesn't sound off at all.
scumwad squarepants 12-31-2005, 05:00 AM Snouter is also in the "liberal hell" of Vermont or whatever NE candyland he's from.
Head on down to Mississip' and see how many public school teachers earn over 50K. Their first question will be "what's a school?".
R.Tricky 12-31-2005, 05:01 AM A lot less then me. Thats all I know.

86Dude 12-31-2005, 12:01 PM Any salary over 30K is way too much for a stupid cop.

That quarter million happened to the be the highest. A large number of cops and public school workers make $125K or so which is still outrageous.

1) That's a rather rude remark and
2) A decent wage keeps honest cops honest.

Try to live a halfway comfortable lifestyle in a major city, or better yet support a family, on 30K. Go ahead, try it, then come back and complain when you have to access the internet for free from the public library, or buy your kids clothes secondhand, or stop eating at restaurants and going to movies except for maybe once a year. That is not a decent wage for people who risk their lives every day for our safety.
86Dude 12-31-2005, 06:23 PM Myst and Kellet, you're both correct but the fact of the matter is I despise cops. I've seen too many bad things that they have done personally so I've conditioned myself to presume that they all suck until proven otherwise.

There are 'bad' people in every profession that take advantage of their positions. I'm sure you would be loathe to say that every single cop is a useless bastard. And you must admit, they have a damn hard job, and it must be hard to work within the confines of their position when they see the same criminals get off time & time again. I am not advocating that police should be corrupt, on the take, or bend/break the rules, but I don't agree with stereotyping a profession.

On LI, last I saw reported, Nassau county cops usually make around $90 thou, overtime included, and in Suffolk County it's around $120 thou. Nassau has lowered it tho for newly hired cops. Not sure why those in Sullfolk make so much, it's not as populated nor as busy, and when ya figure NYC cops make twice as less....it's insane. :eek7:
Mystlet 12-31-2005, 07:19 PM The more shorthanded a police force is, the more overtime the staff their will work, and of course, their earnings will skyrocket.

I gave up on assuming the best in police a long time ago, and if given the chance I'd wager 7 out of 10 would put the law and the constitution by the wayside if they knew they wouldn't be held accountable for just doing "their jobs". They'd randomly subject us to stip searches if a bureacrat gave them the go ahead
