View Full Version : "You complete me"
Bear Stories 12-29-2005, 01:53 PM This is the biggest bunch of bullsh!t ever spoken in the English, (or any other, really), language.
How did we ever buy into this crap? Why is it that people think that they are not whole unless they are one half of a couple? This just makes me crazy.
Are we not, or should we not be whole and complete people in our own right before we get all attached to someone else?
Put it this way, if I am only half a person without a mate, then why in the world would that prospective mate want only half a person? How does this work?:nonono:
CowPunk 12-29-2005, 01:54 PM Soulmate theology.
boedicca 12-29-2005, 01:55 PM If anybody ever says anything like that to me, I will Run Run Run Away from him as fast as possible. Who needs a clingy, dependent, weak Beta?
Bear Stories 12-29-2005, 01:57 PM Well, that's all very well and good but why don't I get to be an entire person all on my own? Why do I only get to be a half until I've got some guy attached to my arm?
Personally, I blame Hallmark. (this was for CP's post)
Gibson 12-29-2005, 01:59 PM No, the biggest BS line in history is "If you REALLY loved me youd f*** me" :hmm:
Not saying anything is wrong with f***ing but you can love someone without @$@&ing them right away.
Baboon 12-29-2005, 02:00 PM I said that to my wife once after she did something nice. Her response to me was, "What are you, some sort of homo?"
(LOL!)
CowPunk 12-29-2005, 02:02 PM Well, that's all very well and good but why don't I get to be an entire person all on my own? Why do I only get to be a half until I've got some guy attached to my arm?
Evidently, that's just God's will.

Honey, you're going straight to hell. ;)
fat mike 12-29-2005, 02:04 PM Romance is a minefield-use the wroing cliche and you let yourself in for the whole liturgy of woman's lib propaganda...
When i pursue a female I say dozens or even hundreds of idiotic things pushing sounds frenetically from my mouth in an effort to entertain this little creature whose attention I managed to capture for some short and indefinite time-knowing that my haircut or clothes or a dozen other moronic things that are of absolutley no consequence could condemn me to the status of the "shunned"...
Rayney 12-29-2005, 02:08 PM So, youre saying I dont complete you?
Bear Stories 12-29-2005, 02:11 PM Well........... ;)
Kidding aside, I'm saying that I get to be a whole and complete person all by my little self. I don't need some man to validate my existance. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that men aren't handy to have around for a variety of reasons :D ).
boedicca 12-29-2005, 02:14 PM If one is not a whole and complete person in and of oneself, one is not competent to be in a healthy relationship.
Just sayin'.
Bear Stories 12-29-2005, 02:16 PM Indeed. :nice:
beatlebabe 12-29-2005, 02:22 PM It's a corny saying, and if I ever say it to NJR someone shoot me. Please.
That said....
To me, it just means that "now that you're in my life, it's so much better."
fat mike 12-29-2005, 02:37 PM Women are truly worth the thousands of hurdles they place in our path-if it's easier, and sometimes it is,it just doesnt seem right-but I'm going to complain-a man has to complain...
kellet 12-29-2005, 02:38 PM I am thoroughly, completely and absolutely miserable single. Being married has given me the confidence and security to learn how to be a complete person all by myself, but I would never ever want to do it.
Before I was married my life revolved around finding a mate. Now that that's taken care of, I can relax and have the rest of my life.
Some people are very independent and happy alone, I'm not one of them.
awwwww
I want someone to say that to me.
Bear Stories 12-29-2005, 02:51 PM ......
Some people are very independent and happy alone, I'm not one of them.
Maybe I should expound; it's not about being happy alone, (although I believe it is more than possible to be happy alone), but it's about being happy with who I am as a person, just me, before I try to be happy with someone else.
fat mike 12-29-2005, 03:14 PM awwwww
I want someone to say that to me.
All the women on this thread are fabulous and someone will say it to each of you...
Monster 12-29-2005, 04:30 PM I'm with you, Lisa.
People should like their lives the way they are before adding layers to them. If you're looking for someone else to make you happy, you'll never learn how to be happy on your own. Codependence is a terribly negative element to have in one's relationship.
when someone says that they don't always mean that they weren't happy before. Being with the person you love can make your life so much better though.
smalltown_honey 12-29-2005, 06:15 PM Women are truly worth the thousands of hurdles they place in our path-if it's easier, and sometimes it is,it just doesnt seem right-but I'm going to complain-a man has to complain...
:nice: I have to say....I love your outlook and your attitude.
p.s. I had that said to me once...and I truly believed it. I think it was one of the sweetest things I have ever heard. Now I am learning to be complete all by myself. I think its a learning experience but a good one to learn. Rely on no one but yourself and you dont get hurt.
Mystlet 12-29-2005, 06:16 PM "You complete me" is six months before the "where do you think you're going, b!tch!"
fat mike 12-29-2005, 06:25 PM Mysty:mad: stop being so cynical! :( how's the face, Sweety?
Mystlet 12-29-2005, 06:30 PM Mysty:mad: stop being so cynical! :( how's the face, Sweety?
Aha, I bet 9/10 people agree with me... :p
My face hurts.
:(
fat mike 12-29-2005, 06:36 PM People never appreciate what they have...women need a lot of love and attention-has your nose gone down any?
Mystlet 12-29-2005, 06:39 PM Its only a little swollen, unnoticable except to me...but there's pressure & pain off & on...I'm pretty stuffy.
Dreamscapist 12-29-2005, 11:21 PM A lover won't complete a person, but the right partner will complete your life, if you want a partner in your life.
Ohenya 12-29-2005, 11:24 PM Is it safe to say that we 'click' ??? *bites lip*
Bear Stories 12-29-2005, 11:28 PM No, no, no! I get to be a complete person in and of myself. All by my little lonesome, (pun intended), I get to be a whole person.
There are no gaping holes, (okay, that sounded dirty but that's not how I meant it), but I'm not missing any fingers or toes. I'm not missing an arm or a leg. I get to be a 100% human being all without having some partner.
cellularsociety 12-30-2005, 12:41 AM Bear stories - you're missing the point. you can be a complete indivdual and still be completed in another sense by another person.
Humans are many faceted social creatures and we have created various systems to satisfy our various needs. Hence we have public society, family, friends and lovers etc. None of these things taes anything away from our ability to be a complete single individual - they simply complete another part of the greater puzzle.
Mark
it is a corny line though! :D
Bear Stories 12-30-2005, 12:45 AM No, Mark, you're missing my point, although I am getting yours.
I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with being happy with another human being, all I'm saying is that I shouldn't have to have another human being to make me an entire person.
If I'm not an entire person, what can I possibly bring to the table in terms of a relationship? If there is something inherently lacking in me, and I need someone else to make me whole, then what can I offer to my partner?
or, heaven forbid, my partner is also lacking and looking for me to make him whole so between the two of us we only make up one person? How does that work?
cellularsociety 12-30-2005, 12:52 AM I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with being happy with another human being, all I'm saying is that I shouldn't have to have another human being to make me an entire person.
SO you would be happy if the line was 'you add to me'? In the end it's all just a turn of phrase anyway. The deep emotional sensations that constitue love are not easily described in words so we have to resort to cliched phrases.
What is more importat is the actions, not the words.
Mark
smalltown_honey 12-30-2005, 01:04 AM Bah Humbug!!! Give me a bottle of Crown and I will be complete.
Bear Stories 12-30-2005, 01:05 AM Well, I'd rather someone not use some cheesy Jerry Maguire line on me at all, ;), but I do get your point. And it's not about the language; it's about the feeling.
The only point that I was trying to make is that it's hard enough for us all to be happy with ourselves as it is without buying into this idea that we've got to have some other person, out there in the ether, to make us, "whole".
Like I said before, not that men aren't great to have around for a variety of reasons; killing bugs, opening pickle jars, getting the snake out of the garage.... :D
Dreamscapist 12-30-2005, 01:07 AM Is it safe to say that we 'click' ??? *bites lip*
I just love it when a girl bites her lip...
smalltown_honey 12-30-2005, 01:10 AM I just love it when a girl bites her lip...
Yea but wouldnt you like it better if she was nibbling on yours?
Dreamscapist 12-30-2005, 01:11 AM One sparks the imagination, the other fuels the passion.
smalltown_honey 12-30-2005, 01:14 AM Well once a spark has started isnt it always best to fuel it?
Dreamscapist 12-30-2005, 01:15 AM Call me a pyromaniac in that regard.
smalltown_honey 12-30-2005, 01:17 AM :nice: cute remark. Great sense of humor!!
Astro 12-30-2005, 01:17 AM Like I said before, not that men aren't great to have around for a variety of reasons; killing bugs, opening pickle jars, getting the snake out of the garage.... :D
I can do all that m'self. :p
Bear Stories 12-30-2005, 01:22 AM Well, I can open the pickle jar, but when it comes to the snake in the garage? Why not let them do it? It makes them feel wanted, I don't have to touch the snake, and they look really, really cute running around in the boxer shorts and the wooly socks. :D
smalltown_honey 12-30-2005, 01:26 AM Getting the snake out of the garage? lol
Was going to say that sounded like a personal problem but I guess you meant a real snake huh?
Bear Stories 12-30-2005, 01:28 AM Well, with that, we want the snake in the garage, yeah?
smalltown_honey 12-30-2005, 01:29 AM Well, with that, we want the snake in the garage, yeah?
:nice: Thats what I'm thinking.
Dreamscapist 12-30-2005, 01:30 AM Or in the "woolly sock."
smalltown_honey 12-30-2005, 01:32 AM :eek3: Oh man...DA is cracking me up tonight. Is it always this fun this late?
Bear Stories 12-30-2005, 01:36 AM Or in the "woolly sock."
Dude, if it involves any sort of woolly sock, are you sure you're doing it right? ;) I think maybe someone's having you on.
Astro 12-30-2005, 01:42 AM :bowrofl:
Man, that was unexpected. XD
Dreamscapist 12-30-2005, 01:43 AM Dude, if it involves any sort of woolly sock, are you sure you're doing it right? ;) I think maybe someone's having you on.
Just a stretch at a euphemism, dearie, although I'd rather slip into one without the wool.
Bear Stories 12-30-2005, 01:55 AM I know, I'm kidding. But we made Astro laugh. That's gotta count for something, yeah?
Dreamscapist 12-30-2005, 01:56 AM I know, I'm kidding. But we made Astro laugh. That's gotta count for something, yeah?
But of course...cyber-tickling is fun, too.
Monster 12-30-2005, 05:42 AM :eek3: Oh man...DA is cracking me up tonight. Is it always this fun this late?
Usually, yeah.
You should see the threads where a member gets a case of the giggles.
Bah Humbug!!! Give me a bottle of Crown and I will be complete.
lol :D :nice:
neobohemian 01-02-2006, 04:05 AM I believe there's a band called Lit who sing a song about this:
"You make me come/
You make me complete/
You make me completely miserable"
There's also an alanis morissette lyric about it:
"I don't want to be your other half/
I believe that one and one make two"
