View Full Version : Lots of lag
FallenAngel 12-28-2005, 08:54 AM I’ve been noticing that I’ve been having to restart my computer a lot lately. I’m starting to lag horribly in some of the games I play when I never used to have that problem. Now could this be from the extra games I’ve been playing? None of the games compare to the graphics on EQ but they’re decently demanding. I’ve done virus checks and spyware checks so I don’t think that’s it.
If it is the games, how can I fix it? More memory?

What kind of lag? loading lag(long load screens)? graphics lag(chop in what you're seeing)? latency lag(you casting a spell and it doesn't actually cast until 2-3 secs later)?

Get technical why don’t ya! :p
A little bit of loading lag and a lot of graphics lag. Well you know how QH is laggy as hell near the docks? Well I’ve had problems where I’ll be running from the dock to the mail box and one second I’ll be next to the feerrott guy and the next second I’m running into a wall.
I haven’t had lag like that since my last gfx card died.
Sometimes it takes forever to zone into certian places and on my new game it took forever just to load the damn game.
It all seems to clear up once I restart my system though until I start playing two of three different games.
fat mike 12-28-2005, 10:36 AM I hate to say anything this obvious but you never know-clear your web cache and defrag...

Yeah but that would require me knowing what my web cache is :p :D
I know what defrag is, so I’ll take care of that tonight before I go to bed. :) Thanks!
fat mike 12-28-2005, 11:10 AM start-control panel-network and internet connections-internet options-you get a box and in the middle there's a button that delete files hit that and there'll be something else that says delete all offline content-check that and hit ok...
That's clearing the web cache,it frees up memory...

Nah, it doesn't free up memory, it frees up Harddrive space :hmm:
I get lag like that in QH too, it's the nature of the zone. It's gotten even worse lately :nonono: I'd say that they have to patch something is all. A defrag couldn't hurt at all. I'd kill TS or Ventrillo or whichever you run though. Try running it on your laptop instead. That makes your processor pig a little bit in-game.
fat mike 12-28-2005, 12:36 PM I thought hard drive space WAS memory...

Not even close :p
Hard drive is where you store stuff. Kinda like a filing cabinet. Memory is where stuff is put that you're working on so it goes faster. Kinda like the top of a desk or table. The larger the tabletop(amount of memory) is the more you can have out of the filing cabinet(hdd) to work on. The only stuff that's in memory is the programs that you are running on your computer. Everything else, temp files etc, are stored on your hard drive. Sometimes memory overflows and goes into virtual memory which is a section of your harddrive made to work LIKE memory but much slower but that's different.

I use ventrillo, but I can’t use it on my laptop for a couple reasons....
1. Innernetzzzz isn’t set up on the laptop yet
2. Magic Missle pwns j00
3. My brother stole my router.
My ventrillo was acting funny this morning. Normally I have a ping of 45 which equated to seconds I believe means I’m hearing and/or broadcasting whatever I’m saying in .45 seconds or something like that. Basically I hear things pretty much as they’re being said. This morning I was pinging at 1035 :eek3:

:P You were on this morning? :eek7: Jeez!!!
My diagnosis is that your brother is downloading too much pr0n :hmm:
And yeah it's MS so 45 milliseconds, 1000ms=1sec :)

I doubt it. He barely lives here anymore and how would him dl’ing pr0n to his computer effect mine?
Hmmm well then 1035 shouldn’t be too bad then...that’s only 1 and half seconds.
Meh I’ll try the defrag tonight and see what happens.

Ahh. Well if he is constantly downloading it it wastes your bandwidth :p
Also, if he has craploads of spyware that's talking to servers outside then that could be pigging your bandwidth as well.
1035 is really bad because it's like if you say something you'll hear it 1.035 seconds later. It's really bad in games sometimes where if you have to shoot something it'll be 10 feet further because you shoot where he was a second ago and it can get aggrivating :p
That's where I'd start :)
