View Full Version : getting rid of linux
I want linux off my laptop, its not working, Im gonna install it on my pc instead.
how do I do this? especially that bootloader needs to go, and I want windows to startup without interference again.
I red somewhere that you can use the windows installation disk to choose repair, but my laptop came with a system disk, thats booteble, and the rest of teh software, windows and the rest, is non bootable, and doesnt ask if it should, repair, only possibility is to reinstall.
Gibson 12-28-2005, 08:29 AM You need a copy of windows. Boot to the CD. go to the recovery console. Run "fixboot" and "fixmbr"
I do have a copy of windows xp pro, and my laptop has home. can I run it safely?

The utility should be the same

gonna try it soon, when I have some time.
after a bit of fundling, I managed to remove linux.
at the same time whiping off windows xp :( oh well, its reinstalled already, lost some pics and music.
that xp boot cd, I was pressing the R button like crazy, but no recovery console ever showed up. it started with partitioning, and then I deleted one partition too many..
GROFF200 01-10-2006, 10:17 AM Just out of curiosity, what linux distribution did you have installed on the laptop? And what kind of laptop is it?
I run linux (Mandrake 10) and Windows XP on my laptop without problems, thus why I'm curious about your issues.
I had fedora core 4 and have an acer aspire 1690 laptop. Im guessing that theres eighter something worng with the cd's, allthough they tested correctly, or my system cant handle fedora.
ive got a new problem now.
I deleted some partitions, and reinstalled windows, which works fine. but the part of my harddisk that I deleted the partitions off, seems to be 'gone'.
I tried to create a new partiton there, in xp, and that seemed to work, but I cant acess it, and it shows up as 0 mb.
how can I get my harddisk back the way it was, before all this? I had , in xp, a C: and an E: drive, both half of my harddiskdisk.
GROFF200 01-10-2006, 05:29 PM First of all, for a laptop linux install I would suggest mandrake (now mandriva) or debian. Fedora probably isn't going to work for a laptop too well.
As far as your partitioning issues, did you clear all partitions and the master boot record? Then, was a new partition created?
By default, windows is probably going to try to partition your hard drive into one partition, meaning all on the C drive. Unless you have a specific reason for wanting to break that into two partitions, it will probably work fine that way.
well I want to put all stuff I use for music making on the 2nd.
but Ive solved it allready, Ive created a new partition in xp, and it didnt work because it was still formatting. :) its finished now and I can use it.
so, mandrake, ha? okay Ill remember that. but for now, Im done with linux onmy laptop, Im gonna put that fedora version on my pc next, see if that works.
