If I were you, I'd buy an internal HD and get one of those things that makes it an external.
I'll try to find a link to what I'm talking about.
Edit:Can't find a link on Newegg.
Anyway, internals are cheaper, so you should be able to get more for less, and you'll have the option of spending even less to upgrade.

One of those things.

I'd agree with flaming liberal, but try this enclosure instead:
http://www.dealsonic.com/neon3bl35ins1.html
It's the best kind of all external enclosures. Fanless, aluminum that automatically acts as a heatsink for the hard drive, and has pretty shiny lights.
Just find any ol' 7200RPM (heck, 5400 would work too) and put it in there. Cache size and RPM speed don't matter too much if you're using it with USB2, because chances are that the USB2 will be the bottleneck anyway.

I should clarify that I wasn't recommending that particular model that to which I linked. It's just that type of thing that I was recommending.

i too reccommend the enclosure route. I have 2 ext drives i use for editing.. I will go futher to suggest Firewire as the connection of choice. Firewire seems to have less problems and seems slightly faster. Especially if you have Firewire 800. That said though you should make sure the case Also has USB so it will work on any older computers as well.
