Today people all over New York have been going the part of Central Park known as Strawberry Fields to pay thie respects to John Lennon who was assainated 25 years ago today.

The mourners range from grade school kids who know John from their parents' records to a 83 year old woman who said she does not care for his music but is paying her respects because she admired how he came from a troubled childhood, yet grew and evolved into a elightened man and because he was one of the most eloquent spokesmen for progressive values and ideas [which still sadly makes Lennon a target for neocons and other conservatvies/right-wingers,as I've found from neocons who hijack this thread out every year].

"Assassinated?"

It is too bad Lennon got all weird and grossed everyone out with the Yoko thing and clumsy war protesting which in effect arguably extended the duration of the war. They should be paying tribute to his musical genius in the context of the great Beatles material and his two or three great songs post-Beatles. The socialist overtones of the lyrics in Imagine notwithstanding, that songs encapsulates his pacifist philosophy which all the embarassing activism denigrates. That philosophy is great but the fatal flaw of course is the underlying assumption in Imaging is that the the humanoids in the world would stop being what they were brought up being, so it is a little against human nature at least from the groups that are causing the problems worldwide.

My dictionary defines assassination as "To murder a prominent person by surprise attack",so John Lennon was indeed assassinanted.

As I previously said, neoncons [and other right-wing jerks] still go after him because he was effective and because he was [in some ways still is] the most eloquent spokeman for the good/humanitarian/decent of values of all the various progressive movements in this world.

Your endless efforts to stereotype all centists/rightists/conservatives is odious.

LOL, John Lennon extended the duration of the vietnam war:p I didn't know about that, are you sure you don't mean Dick Nixon?:D
I guess I do need to give Yoko, some credit then, right.:p

They should be paying tribute to his musical genius in the context of the great Beatles material and his two or three great songs post-Beatles.

Of course Snouter had a typo here, and he meant "two or three great ALBUMS post-Beatles", and of course a few more good albums as well:D .

Then again, Snouter probably can't name more than 3 of his songs anyways...:p

The socialist overtones of the lyrics in Imagine notwithstanding, that songs encapsulates his pacifist philosophy which all the embarassing activism denigrates. That philosophy is great but the fatal flaw of course is the underlying assumption in Imaging is that the the humanoids in the world would stop being what they were brought up being, so it is a little against human nature at least from the groups that are causing the problems worldwide.

What Snouter means is that despite John Lennon having such great philosophy and ideas, he should be given more credit for the fact that he was one of the 10 or 5 top greatest singer-songwriters ever lived, since his musical talent was even greater than his political activism!!

:nice: History will remember John Lennon as one of the greatest people.

john lennon got naked with a chick.

That's true, and I suspect that the same isn't true to some of the conservatives here who have tried to put him down, which would arguably explain some of their issues:p I personally don't know too many decent chicks who would actually get naked with some of those people:D

he rulz.

:nice: Agree.

I am too high to put a more thoughtful post about one of my heroes, so I will just chime in and pay my respects to one of the most amazing people/heroes this world has ever seen. John Lennon was a great man, a spokesman for peace, and will live on in our hearts through his music, forever.

GF,

Charlie Rose had two guys from Rolling Stone on the other night [one my age,the other your age] talking about Lennon and it was great.

As they said Lennon and Mc Cartney taught each other how to be great,Mc Cartney was a genius melodist like Brian Wilson,Lennon was a genius lyricst whose lyrics were straightfoward like those of Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash and John and Paul's respective forms of genius not only mixed brillantly together, but they taught each other how to do what the other did [I would add that George Martin taught them and George and Ringo how to do things they otherwise wouldn't have learned either].

:nice: I would also say that John Lennon was a genius melodist as well.

John Lennon was, imho, the only beatle who wrote any decent songs after leaving the group.
I'm not a big fan of his peace and love gimmick days, but I appreciae that he wasn't scared to stand up for his beliefs.
His death was truly a loss for everyone.

I appreciate any musician who has something of more substance to say than just "shake your behind" and "dance"-music should have content...

So... You consider 98% of musicians in history poopy heads then?

Yup, they do drugs then they're poopy heads. That doesn't mean I don't like their music, I just have a hard time taking anything they say serious. If they have such a disregard for their own well being, for the laws of our society and the impression they make on our children, then why should I pay any attention to anything they have to say?

Not to slam you MILF, but wouldn't public gangbanging with strangers also fall into that category???

LOL, how can you even compare one of the best singer-songwriters ever lived, who was a member of the greatest band ever and could play some good guitar, with a...very good, but not THAT original or influential singer-songwriter, who played guitar as if he was 10 years old??

He did drugs...that makes him a poopy head in my book....

:p Everybody did drugs, lol.

Well I certainly don't try to pass myself off as being any kind of spokesperson or pretend to know how to solve the ills of the world. And I think (though I certainly may be wrong) that sex doesn't cause brain damage.

Neither did Lennon. He just said things that were mostly obvious to intellegent people.

And I think (though I certainly may be wrong) that sex doesn't cause brain damage.

I didn't think so either, but you forced me to consider such an option.:p
