View Full Version : No video on computer
On one of the PC's I built for my mom, she started having troubles (been awhile, can't remember exactly what). So, I replaced the mobo since her other one was old. It's been awhile since I done this, so I'm going by memrory here.
I used the xp1700 chip, new stick of Ram and the same WD HDD she had. I fired it up, and no vid. So, I figure the board was bad, RMA'ed the board, same deal. Guess it wasn't the board. Didn't have time to deal with, but I do now. I've since, installed a vid card, still no vid, I've tried using hte onboard vid, still nothing. I finally today put in a new PS, still nothing. I can't see the post or anything.
So, maybe it isn't posting  I've tried reseting the jumpers so it starts fresh and still nothing. I want to say that when I had speakers on it, you could hear windows startup, but I don't now, so I'm not sure.
What should I do next?
jonnyofthedead 12-02-2005, 07:53 PM Not wanting to be insultingly obvious, but have you checked the monitor on another machine?
yep, works fine on my mac as a second monitor
I'm wondering if the hdd is bad now. I hooked speakers up and didn't hear windows boot
but still, wouldn't I see a post from the motherboard, even if the hdd was dead?
Myrddin 12-03-2005, 12:30 AM Unusual. It could be memory or processor but problems with those usually will stop the computer booting up (and you said you heard Windows starting?). It could be PSU but I doubt it. Maybe you have a video card installed that you over looked somehow, or perhaps one of the PCI cards is somehow doing this.
Shadoglare 12-03-2005, 02:46 AM Need to know if it's posting or not.
When you hit the power, do you get the tell-tale post beep?
Does it go through the motions of booting (can see the light and hear the hard drive loading, etc) - or do you hit the power button and it just sits there doing nothing?
Even with no drives installed at all you should still be able to see the bootup text.
If it's not posting at all, disconnect everything from the mb except for the processor and a stick of ram (no drives, no extra cards, etc) - at the very least it should beep angrily at you.
no post, no beep. The HDD spins up, but that's it.
I have no PCI cards, just one AGP card I put in that didn't change anything. I've tried changing the mem around, but it should still at least post if the mem was bad, then I would get the stupid beeps saying what's bad
this last time I didn't hear windows startup... that must have been some time ago, or I was just remember another PC I had worked on
TheGreatMonkey 12-03-2005, 05:05 AM It your not making it to post then the error must have something to do with the Processor. If you can, try and test it on another mobo, or test another processor on this mobo.
Shadoglare 12-03-2005, 11:40 AM Hmm... not good.
I'd say try this: unhook absolutely everything from the mb, including the memory, hook up just the mb & processor (and, well, of course stuff like the leds and speaker) to the power supply, and fire it up.
With no memory attached, it should give you a series of beeps complaining that the memory is missing.
If it still just sits there dead, if this was a board you installed the processor onto, if it's a "pin" style processor and not a "cartridge" style, check to make sure you didn't accidentally bend any of the pins (I've done this before, and it sucks) or that you didn't do something like accidentally install it in the wrong direction or something.
If it still doesn't do anything when you're *that* barebones, it's either something gone wrong with the processor or the mb - in this case likely the processor since you already repaced the mb.
dunno why, but I guess I just assumed the processor wouldn't be the problem.. but now it's sounding like it is.
Thanks alot. guess I'll start looking for one :)
