I did a DA search for this topic but didn't find anything relative to the new movie . Kinda hard to believe, so maybe I'm restarting an older topic.

What did you think of the film, Jed? I actually really enjoyed it. Pretty cool that Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Pheonix did all the vocals without lip synching to old soundtracks.

This role for Joaquin Pheonix went a long way to restoring his credibility after suffering through the bitch boy impression that he earned after Gladiator, IMO.

Anyhow, I'm not a deep film critic, but I really enjoyed this movie. Good stuff - got me back in touch with some of the old Johnny Cash sounds that I grew up with.

:nice:

only because I had to wait for the kids to watch "Goblet of Fire" and I detest Harry Potter (when is he gonna DIE, DIE, DIE YOU LITTLE BASTARD)

Anyway I didn't expect much except any seat I wanted in the theatre, but niether my low expectations for the film's quality or high expectations for easy seating were met.

But I agree with music critics who think that Cash lead a rather ordinary life for a Rockabilly singer of his day (Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Jerry Lee, Waylon Jennings, all of whom are characters in the film), but whose voice and music will allow listeners to dintinctly remember him 100 years from now. So I would suggest investing in The Essential Johnny Cash [LIMITED EDITION] [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005Y1M2/qid=1133457654/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/103-0589360-9356652?v=glance&s=music) before the movie.

I wish it was more about Cash then the romance between him and June. I know that was a big part of his life, but there was so much more and because the focus is on a love story it came off as a little sappy sometimes. I know that some of his "hard ass" image was exaggerated, but in the film it seems like he's on the verge of tears half the time.

Pheonix and Witherspoon both did a pretty good job, both in acting and singing. I enjoyed the film, I just wish the focus was on his life instead of a romance.

Nothing wrong with going to see it by yourself.

I disagree. It was a bit sappy at times, but it certainly wasn't a chick flick.

I really want to see this movie, the reviews were pretty good and I'm excited to see Reese Witherspoon in a more serious roll - she started out with serious characters (her break out was Man in the Moon - a great flick), good to know she's got the goods after the fluffy run. I hope she ends up like a Julia Roberts with some fun and some serious rolls.

It's just semantics really, but it couldn't be her breakout role as it was her first film. A breakout is when someone moves from relatively unknown status to celebrity. I'd say her breakout was Cruel Intentions.

Um, what? Not a chick flick????????

1. A romance,
2. a love story,
3. a man on the "verge of tears," and
4. a woman that recues him from............ himself!!

What about this movie made you think it "certainly wasn't a chick-flick??"

Because chick flicks are sentimental tear jerkers or cheeseball romances with little or no artistic merit. Walk the Line is none of those.

So it's the cheese factor that draws the chicks and repells men?

The movie is about a love story that's over 50 years old .....is this not sentimental?

Maybe it is a sign of the times, but for me, unless a drama includes Ahnold loping off heads as Conan, or Bruce Willis Dying Hard, then it is suspiciously close to being a chick flick.

Maybe it's because I appreciate film for the art of film more than entertainment, but I completely disagree. Amelie is a great example. It's a 100% romance with no "badass" characters, no action, but it's not a chick flick in the least bit. Same could be said about films like Lolita, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, Blue, White, Red, Sideways, and the list goes on.

I agree with igo about Amelie and Sideways.

I was going to to see Walk The Line next week but something came up,I'll very likely see it sometime this month

So I guess "From Dusk 'til Dawn" isn't on the Chick Flick List either?;)

Thelma and Louise? What movie would you consider a Chick Flick?

I saw the movie last weekend and I thought it was a really good movie myself.Yea I guess Im a chick but there were a lot of men watching it do and they all seemed to enjoy it too.

Thelma and Louise was pretty much a chick flick, although not painfully so.
chick flicks are films like ghost, steel magnolias (never saw it), pretty woman, the wedding planner (also didn't see)...

You guess you're a chick?

Anyone whose not SURE they are or aren't a chick probably has no business evaluating whether or not men were watching, much less enjoying, the movie.

How the heck do you know if Pretty Woman or The Wedding Planner didn't have "art of flim" if you didn't see 'm? "Ghost"....sorry man, but Demi Moore's erotic clay molding scene WAS THE MOVIE!

I did see Pretty Woman. I know Wedding Planner had little to no artistic merit because it was a cheesy romantic comedy with Jenifer Lopez and Mathew Mcanawhatever and it was directed by Adam Shankman, director of winners like A Walk to Remember and Cheaper By the Dozen 2. Steel Magnolias is an educated guess because it's an all female cast dealing with female issues that make you cry. I'm not sure what your point is with Ghost. Because there's erotic clay molding it's not a chick flick?

I've only used those films as examples. I could probably give you a list of 20 chick flicks that I actually have seen if you'd like.

Nah, that's ok igofast, let's just try an stick to "Walk the Line," a romantic tear-jerker, about a sentimental love story (60 years ago), in which a woman saves a man from his own bad habits.....................BUT, which you claim cannot possibly be a chick flick...

I agree to disagree, that a chick flick can be a good (non "cheesy" movie).

Fair enough, but I never said it couldn't be a chick flick. It's not to me, but the notion of a chick flick is subjective.

The difference between Thelma and Louise and Smokey and the Bandit was that Smokey and the Bandit didn't pretend to be something more profound that than it actually was.

How Thelma and Louise won an Oscar for Screenplay is something I have never figured out.

Also ,I would call Sideways a "guy movie",maybe a cerebral guy movie, but a guy movie none the less.
