View Full Version : Women put on makeup for other women!
Think&Doubt 11-27-2005, 04:01 PM Most men like women with very little or no makeup.
Women however, seem to have a need to put on lots of makeup.
And we cannot understand WHY women continue to do this!!
(When guys get together, you will eventually hear this one).
So why do women continue to lay it on thick?
(It's analogous to the Guys who put WAY to much cologne on).:eek:
My theory: They are not putting on makup for the men. They are competing with other women and must outdo them. They have bought into the idea that they are not attractive with all that "stuff". Pity:( .... Natural is MUCH more attractive.
ragtopdave 11-27-2005, 04:55 PM Most women that I've known, seem to follow that rule. Maybe not that the women I've been with in my life cake on the make up, but rather think they NEED it. One girl (to me, THE girl) in my life that I went out with for 2 years wore very little make up, but the first time I saw her without any on after spending the night with her, she said she knew she wasn't as pretty without it. I was blown away. This girls eyes were incredibly gorgeous, with AND without make up on. I would tell her how beautiful I thought she was during the morning without her make up on, though I think she thought I was just saying it.
Some women use eyeliner and stuff I think to bring out their eyes, and it works well, some women don't need it. Natural is beautiful in my book too.
LisaRisa87 11-27-2005, 05:09 PM I don't wear make up often, usually just for pictures, and if I'm going out somewhere where I have to dress up. I don't wear make up for other women's competition, because I don't have to compete with anyone considering I have a boyfriend. I wear make up because I have an uneven skin color, and scars.
Gibson 11-27-2005, 05:50 PM I agree, makeup = t3h lame
Mystlet 11-27-2005, 07:18 PM I've never worn much makeup, usually just mascara, unless I'm going out for a special evening.
Whether you think a woman needs it or no it's a personal preference...she wears it for herself, not for you. Makeup done right does emphasize the eyes, cheeks/ect. Many woman feel more self confident with it on.
Of course we don't put it on for you guys! :rolleyes:
Yes, it's for other woman.
P.s. I don't wear a lot. I think the "natural" look is more in style, at least with high schoolers.

Though truthfully, while I know some women or girls who lay it on thick, most don't. I use mascara and lipstick almost every day but it's rare for me to use the other stuff although I have it laying around the house. And I totally do it for myself, 'my look' is an extension of my personality.
Java_man 11-27-2005, 11:34 PM makeup ?

Rayney 11-28-2005, 12:59 AM I almost never wear make up...I must look like an unkempt hag most of the time. Im ok with that.
boedicca 11-28-2005, 10:44 AM Women wear make-up because of Flourescent Lights. Flourescent Lights make everyone (but especially women) look horrible - which is why the cosmetic departments in department stores are lit up to the max.
Tally 11-28-2005, 08:05 PM I want to look good to everybody, whether male or female!:D! My everyday makeup consists of just mascara and eyebrow pencil, if I need to dress up for an occasion I'll add some powder foundation and lipstick and possibly some eye shadow. I don't mind going without makeup, I don't have to have it on to be seen in public, I usually put makeup on 5 days out of the week though for work.

this explains much. :|
Gibson 11-28-2005, 08:55 PM that's so stupid.
So's wearing makeup :|
:shrug: I didn't have a problem with it :shrug:
mickio 11-29-2005, 12:53 AM I go through phases where I think I should have it on hand just in case I feel a need for makeup, carry it around in my purse for a while, then end up throwing it away the next time I clean up my purse. It would take an awfully large occasion (probably involving planned pictures) for me to actually put it on. Weird huh?
kellet 11-29-2005, 01:07 AM In general, I use some mineral powder and lip balm on a daily basis. Once in a while a tad of blush and lash tint (not goopy, waxy mascara :P). I only wear other makeup when I'm getting all dressed up for something special.

:mad: You're impossible! geeze...
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Every day I wear black eye liner, mascara, and some foundation and sometimes a little blush.
Eye shadow and lipstick look stupid on me. :p
I used to do black eyeliner every day, but I guess I got lazy at some point.
ResidentRice 12-05-2005, 04:54 AM I think it comes down to the "hot" or "cute" debate. A girl can't be considered "hot" without makeup really, but a girl can be "cute" without it. Its all in the eye of the beholder. I myself prefer cute and low maintenance, and lots of makeup use is definitely high maintenance.
And as I see it, make up is a way of making a girl feel more attractive, but not necessarily to attract men. Hell, I'll throw on a nice shirt and some cologne and shine up my shoes sometimes even when I know there won't be any single ladies around, but just to look nice.
TheAmber 12-06-2005, 08:50 AM I'll be honest I put on a bit of makeup for important first impressions. NOT first impressions of any random stranger that walks by, which I think is why a lot of girls do it. Maybe.
Spazola 12-06-2005, 12:32 PM I don't really wear makeup, and have no desire to. You have to be careful eating if you wear lipstick, can't rub your eyes if you wear eye shadow...it just doesn't make any sense, because it makes things harder. The few times that I do wear make up is mostly for fun, or if I'm covering something up. That's it. :shrug:
Also, makeup doesn't change much--if someone is going to think you're ugly, they will whether or not you're wearing makeup. :shrug:
Diavolo 12-06-2005, 01:05 PM I have to wear it before I leave the house, otherwise I look like a cadaverous troll. I'm SO pale, man. Just a bit of foundation and blush will make me look like I've had a blood transfusion. Oh and I need mascara as well, to prove I have eyelashes.
kellet 12-06-2005, 01:10 PM I had someone at work ask if he could take my picture with his cell phone last week, because I was the palest person in the building. And I'm certain he wasn't flirting.
Tell him that just like with mirrors, vampires cannot be seen with cameras.
Then bite at him. :D
ResidentRice 12-06-2005, 04:31 PM Or tell him he's an uncouth azz. What a jerk.... "Hey, can I take a pic of you cuz you're so pale?"
TheAmber 12-06-2005, 05:12 PM Oh yeah I have to say I used to LOVE bright red lipstick and little polka dot skirts... but I got my lipring and I just don't like the hassle of trying to put lipstick on around a piercing... >.>
(didnt read this whole thread)
I have to answer this question with another question.
Most men want real women, yet why do they continuously get sucked into the mostly unatainable for women-Barbie-look?
kellet 12-31-2005, 03:21 AM It's weird - I have a friend whose husband says she looks better without makeup and prefers her to look natural, but then asks her to get a boob job? The woman is not flat chested. Why is makeup not OK but plastic surgery is? It makes no sense.
kellet 12-31-2005, 03:23 AM Or tell him he's an uncouth azz. What a jerk.... "Hey, can I take a pic of you cuz you're so pale?"
It didn't come across that way to me - I have since found out that his phone camera makes normal people glowing white, so he wanted to see what would happen if he tok a picture of a normally glowing white person - I turned blue. It was friendly, I work with him every day, we're friends. No need to get overprotective. :)
Ok.
I'm SO pale, man.
Pale is the new tan!
(Im not just saying that because Im so pale my forearms are nearly transparent)
kellet 12-31-2005, 08:08 AM Tan is gross. It's fine if you're naturally darker skinned but toasting yourself makes you look like an overcooked chicken.
I've had a nice rosy glow for a few weeks since I've been sick :). Read: my cheeks are pink because of the infection brewing inside of them.
kellet 01-01-2006, 11:40 AM if all of weman don't use makeup we will find out we did a big mistake !
WTF are you talking about? Can you clarify this with some sense?
Yuppie Gal 01-06-2006, 01:57 PM I've definitely noticed how women conform to makeup norms. It works both ways: corporate environments where women take cues from peers to dress up to ultra liberal/"granola" college where girls who wear makeup and heels to class get scowls.
MyWhey 01-06-2006, 03:35 PM Well I guess I will have to be the minority here.... I have worn makeup since 5th grade.... base, blush, eyes, all of it.... get my nails done every 2 weeks, have my hair highlighed almost completely blonde, and lay in a tanning bed regularly.... (one of my fav places to be in fact)....
SO.... :shrug:
When I go camping every weekend thru the summer (in a fifth wheel camper) I take my makeup along.... I don't usually put on anything more than mascara and eye liner, unless there is a function going on.
I don't know 01-06-2006, 06:26 PM It's more of a personality issue to me. It seems to be a matter of degrees - I can't believe that carefully scrutinizing one's face for imperfections on a regular basis can really go towards making one a better and/or happier person. Or a person I want to be in the company of for that matter.
Of course, if I'm wrong I don't suppose I have much problem with it :hmm:
neobohemian 01-06-2006, 09:31 PM I'm pale too. :(
I'm half white, half black, and my skin's in between, essentially a really tan color, but, ya know, not fake. Because my natural coloring is medium-dark and i've got dark blonde hair, dark eyelashes, and a naturally protrusive (read, plump) mouth, i don't usually wear any make up at all, my natural coloring's enough.
Usually, women don't really need much makeup, they need to take care of their face. the best things you can do for your face involve
sculpting the eyebrow(it frames the entire face. if they're neat, your whole face looks neat.),
keeping lips soft and hydrated with the tiniest hint of pink, a little color here opens up and defines the whole rest of the face, (if you don't do anything else, do your lips, your whole face will look finished), and
exfoliating the skin (this is where that fresh, radiant young skin comes from, but there's usually too much dead skin sitting on top of it to show your true, beautiful, glistening skin) and moisturizing afterwards with a good moisturizer, that's what keeps the skin looking young, moisture.
Other things women can do are excercise, which increases circulation of blood to an otherwise pale face, and drink as much water as they can stand, it sounds cheesy but it really does make you beautiful from within by flushing toxins from the system. whenever you're feeling shriveled and old, drink a big glass of water, see if you don't start feeling better. Also, the obvious things: get enough sleep, that's when your body repairs itself, when your skin regenerates, and don't smoke, it's death for the face and the body. but then, we all knew that, didn't we?
kellet 01-07-2006, 05:16 AM IMO just curling and/or tinting the eyelashes also goes a long way, opens up the eyes, along with groomed brows, smooth even skin tone, and moist lips, that's all that's really needed for beauty. Of course other makeup is a lot of fun sometimes but too much loks like a mask or even clownish. Artificially tanned skin is disgusting, stick with what you were born with and protect it from the damaging effects of the sun and tanning! Naturally dark skin is beautiful but it looks awful to try to change your skin tone.
Yuppie Gal 01-10-2006, 05:11 PM I too hate the look of artificial tans. Had a friend who went tanning all the time and tried to convince me to do it too. I thought it made her skin look terrible but I didn't want to hurt her feelings by saying that. She was a TV news anchor and felt like it was really important to keep up that tan and big hairdo.
What concerns me is how many people are exposing themselves to UV rays or chemicals at tanning salons. We're exposed to enough toxic stuff we can't help, why add to it?
Intellectual Barbie 01-12-2006, 03:25 PM My ex-boyfriend calls it war paint. I'll never forget that, because he was totally right.
shewolfnm 01-12-2006, 03:50 PM And we cannot understand WHY women continue to do this!!
My theory: They are not putting on makup for the men. They are competing with other women and must outdo them. .
I have to agree with this statment.. just a bit. ;-)
But I think of it a bit diffrently.
Contest for attractiveness? Absolutly.
Competition in the mating game is what has kept us as a species alive all these years. We all want to be the one that everyone is sexualy attracted to . In todays age, we use makeup.
Before Clairol, Cover -Girl etc.. there was tatoos, jewlery, and other body alterations that made a woman or a man more 'socialy desirable' and in turn raised thier chances of mating.
We have now re-worded that survival instinct and call it Self Esteem...
Yuppie Gal 01-12-2006, 03:54 PM It seems totally programmed into women's collective conscience since ancient times. I'm always surprised to see the ratio of artifacts found in burial sites, regardless of culture, that are related to grooming.
FallenAngel 01-13-2006, 09:35 AM I wear makeup but I don't think I'm competing with other women.
I don't wear much because like someone said before a little goes a long way. Like right now I'm only wearing foundation and mascara. I skipped the eyeliner this morning.
only wicked city women paint their face up like injuns! :blas:
Gibson 01-13-2006, 09:39 AM :lol::lol::rofl:
Cuz C is a wicked city woman.... :p
Sad part is people used to think that way :hmm:
I'm with C on this one, little bit goes a long way. Although I wouldn't be bothered if makeup had never been invented either :shrug:
i'm not saying C is a wicked city women... i agree her view too, a li'l goes a long way.
And yes making yourself look like a cracked out clown is overkill.
The key word is subtle.
Terrapin 01-13-2006, 10:08 AM I only wear makeup if I'm going on job interviews or to a wedding or something formal..and even then I only put on a litle foundation, maybe some mascara, and little lipstick, usually a light color..
