I had something of a personal comeuppance in this area. Gained about 100 lbs. in slightly under a year. My thyroid decided to commit hari-kari. It was weird to be running 60 to 80 miles a week and see that you were gaining 2-3 lbs. per week. Which of course I had to give up once the lbs. really started piling on.

Once I finally got diagnosed, the medication knocked out most of the nasty side effects like the bloating in your face (even in the tongue in my case), the alligator skin and the need to sleep 14 hrs a day, but it hasn't helped me lose any weight. Oh, and I'm still alive which supposedly I wouldn't have been by now had they not caught it.

I say "comeuppance" because I was always the sort who looked down on the fat as lazy, even stupid. A lesson in humility if nothing else. :hmm:
