WASHINGTON - The Republican-controlled Congress helped itself to a $3,100 pay raise on Friday, then postponed work on bills to curb spending on social programs and cut taxes in favor of a two-week vacation...
The cost-of-living increase for members of Congress — which will put pay for the rank and file at an estimated $165,200 a year — marked a brief truce in the pitched political battles that have flared in recent weeks on the war and domestic issues.
So much so that the issue was not mentioned on the floor of either the House or Senate as lawmakers worked on legislation whose passage will assure bigger paychecks...
SimoneAsLily 11-19-2005, 06:56 PM Drop in the bucket. A measly 2%. They work so hard for us.:barf:
Republicans are people too.
PeoplesChamp 11-20-2005, 04:22 PM It sure would be nice for the proletariat to have the authority to vote themselves a COLA annually.

Yes. :nice:
the people in congress take a lot of time out of their normal everyday lives to serve the public. 3100 dollars is a drop in the bucket. they should be getting more.
Stone 11-20-2005, 11:20 PM So much for public "service". When most people do a bad job, they get fired.
Poor spending practices should not be rewarded by a wage increase. I think that congress should not be paid at all unless they can at a minimum balance the budget.
It's despicable behavior by greedy old WASPS. Impeach them all.

How much money do they make per year? How come we arent allowed to give ourselves pay increases?
Shouldnt the people have a say in this since we pay their salaries? IMHO, we are getting ripped off.
Im sure the democrats didnt vote no on this.
SwiftSloth 11-21-2005, 12:05 AM Ahem... Besides the 150,000+ pay, they also recieve free transportation, dozens of understaffers who do all there work, and the option of housing around D.C.
They'v been giving themselves pay raises annually for quite a while now i believe... This is nothing new.

You are correct. It was bipartisan, one of the few things they all overwhelmingly agreed on.
SimoneAsLily 11-21-2005, 12:51 AM If the CFO of ANY company was unable to balance a budget, contain costs, etc., there would be no raise and most likely fired. But with the 2yr or 6 yr 'contract' length these politicians have we are stuck with them. Too bad the voting public has such short term memory loss when elections come around.

Stone, you said it best!
How much money do they make per year?
Not as much as they could make if they remained working in the private sector. These are talented people. There is a demand for talented people.
How come we arent allowed to give ourselves pay increases?
Well, we don't have the luxury of determining our own rate of compensation.
Shouldnt the people have a say in this since we pay their salaries?
I don't think so. They'd never get a raise if it was up to the people. It's not tlike they're ripping people off. It's just an increase in salary. Everybody gets increases at one time or another.
