HARRISBURG, Pa. - An ancient weapon that was apparently used as early as prehistoric times to slay woolly mammoths may soon be added to the arsenals of Pennsylvania hunters.

The state Game Commission is drafting proposed regulations to allow hunters to use the atlatl, a small wooden device that propels a six-foot dart as fast as 80 mph. The commission could vote in January and make a final decision in April, officials said.

It's not yet clear which animals would be hunted, but the proposal has the support of people who want to kill deer with the handmade weapon of Stone Age design.

"For me, it would be a thrill to have a deer get up close enough and to throw my dart and hit the deer, bag it like my ancestors did," said Jack Rowe, 45, a veteran hunter and atlatl enthusiast from Sayre.

Yeah I read that....

Hunting is a Pennsylvania Unofficial State Holiday.
The towns become a ghost town, cause everyones in the woods blowing up deer. I never had any interest in freezing my balls off waiting to shoot a deer. I don't have a problem shooting one... it's the fact that now I have a 300 lb. bloody carcass to deal with... great... just what I felt like doing this weekend, dragging, carving, gutting a dead animal. Friggin good time... lemme tell ya.

I must admit though... a certain primitive part of me wanted to try out this whole "Spear Hunting" thing. Though in my vision, I had used it in a mall... and my target was some *** in the gap.

Didn't schools closed down for the first day of deer? Or was it just because me, my sisters, and mom would go shopping that day? :D

I'd kill a deer with a spear. It seems a shame something as american as a spear is unlawful in most states.

Not only is the spear an efficient weapon, but after killing the deer you can reuse it to make tasty kebabs over the fire. :nice:

Spears played an important role in the American Revolutionary War. :)
