Monster 11-11-2005, 05:07 PM You are not worthy to hold a name even remotely similar to mine.
Begone, imposter!
Oberon 11-11-2005, 05:29 PM Nixon was probably one of the more intelligent Presidents, no doubt about it in my mind. He was mentally ill, though, and he didn't handle the pressure well, and made some very stupid decisions. I wouldn't have ever voted for him, but he did have some practices I wish every President, Senator, and Congressman would emulate.
Snouter 11-11-2005, 05:44 PM In contrast to Slick Willie, President Nixon actually had the class to resign rather than put the country through all that. And for what, some guys broke into a hotel room on his behalf? That would not even qualify as a crime today.

He did considerably more than that, and actually participated in crimes, whereas Clinton didn't.

They broke into a hotel room to gain dirt on the Democratic party & blackmail them for political gain. He also used the power of his office to wield federal agencies like the FBI, CIA & IRS as weapons against his political opponents & enemies.
Nothing Clinton did compares with THAT! He didn't believe the Constitution applied to him - "When the President does it, it's not a crime."
McKay.L 11-11-2005, 07:23 PM He also didn't trust the Jews:
"People have to realize that the Jews in the U.S control the entire information and propaganda machine the large newspapers, the motion pictures radio and television, and the big companies. And there is a force that we have to take into consideration" - Former U.S President Richard Nixon as cited in Leonard Dinnerstein's book "In Search of Antisemitism"
CowPunk 11-11-2005, 07:50 PM He was a raving antisemite who's caught on the Watergate tapes strictly forbidding his daughters to date Jews, and gave Helmut Kohl orders to count the number of Jews in the State Department. However, he played a critical role in aiding Israel in the Six Day War.
He also disliked Italians & the Irish.

If you look at it another way don't you think he had a good reason to ban his daughter from seeing jews? Who knows what he really knew.
He also disliked Italians & the Irish.
Dosn't mean he was wrong about the jews.

No, I don't - it was bigotry.
Dosn't mean he was wrong about the jews.
Hardly means he was right, as if a condemnation of an entire ethnic group could ever be valid.
Betrade 11-11-2005, 09:46 PM His ecomnomics weren't very impressive, but he was a great foriegn policy President.
Every president who followed him sought his advice at one time or another. Clinton even had him come to Washington to do some foriegn policy consulting.
If he had just come clean from the start, he would have been forgiven, but he chose the hard way. At least he had the decency to step down and save the country from even more pain and suffering in the end.
I think the worst thing about his presidency that it eventually helped get Jimmy Carter elected.
Oberon 11-12-2005, 02:16 AM If he had just come clean from the start, he would have been forgiven,
No, he would have been indicted.
His ecomnomics weren't very impressive,
What did you not like about them? He was a conservative, the last Republican conservative to serve in the White house. Don't confuse the class warfare and crackpot theories of what current Republicans rave about as being conservative; they're fascists at best, and merely thieves and criminals on average, not conservatives.
At least he had the decency to step down and save the country from even more pain and suffering in the end.
He held out until his own party forced him to resign. He cut a plea bargain deal with his own party.
Clinton had no reason to resign, he was merely being subjected to dirty politics from the Lee Atwater School Of Republican Hyperbole. His 'impeachment' was merely for show, and had no real merit. If every President with a girl friend on the side was impeached for lying about his personal life, very few Presidents would be immune to impeachment, and neither would the many Republicans who liked to take their mistresses to the Clinton impeachment proceedings as a lark. I have to admit it was hilarious having Strom Thurmond, rapist and misceginationist, preside over Clinton's 'impeachemnt'; nobody can say they didn't have a sense of humor.
I think the worst thing about his presidency that it eventually helped get Jimmy Carter elected.
I keep reading this all the time, but never heard any real reasons Carter was supposed to be so awful, other than Rush Limbaugh's rediculous gibberish and constant repititions of this canard.

Isn't it amazing that when you look at it that Bush's actions are FAR worse than Nixons yet there is no talk of impeachment??

Nixon imposed wage and price controls to fight inflation. They didn't work, and we had "stagflation" instead. He was no economic conservative. In fact, he was quite liberal in general. He ran from the right, and governed from the left. But, he did end the war eventually.
Jimmy Crater was WEAK, except for boycotting the olympics (which angered lots of olympyians and had no impact on the Soviets in Afgahnistan whatsoever). His economic poliocies created 13% inflation, and interest rates around 21%. He was a disaster in almost every way. He cut defense, raised taxes, created more bureaucracy, etc. He was the quintesential liberal.
They even created the "misery index", to judge how awful things were.
He lowered the speed limits, told America to "put on your sweater", and regulated oil prices. He created a general feeling of malaise, and his policies created more of the same.
That's why he was trounced by Reagan in a landslide. The country wanted no more of Jimmy's policies. He's a nice guy, but was an utter failure as President.
