View Full Version : Mustang Fanatics Disgraced by Grandma Shifting Soccer Mom
Cannis. 05-11-2002, 12:05 AM So, in an effort to (1) share, and (2) try to get my pathetically low post numbers up, I thought I'd share a story.
------------
On the way home today I pulled up to a stoplight and was admiring a beautiful 2001 (I think) red Mustang Cobra and noticed that a middle aged woman was driving the car. I mentioned to my girlfriend how interesting I thought it was that that woman was driving such a, well, for lack of a better word, hotrod so-to-speak knowing that most people interested in those cars are younger, and usually men.
In any case, I thought, "Hey. Cool mom probably." And went to the next light. Well, I admit I was really wondering if that woman really DROVE such a monster or if maybe she just liked mustangs and wanted the "top-of-the-line" SVT model when she went in to buy one. So the light turned green and I wasn't really paying attention or trying to race or anything and still had the car in neutral. So I shift and kind of take off, and hit it a little. Well she too obviously didn't have it in gear but she took off right with me. So I kinda pushed a little harder and then she did and next thing I knew, I'm racing some old mom in her Cobra!
Well, being in a Porsche Boxster, by all intents and purposes, she really should have beaten me. But, hey, I'm not drivin' a fiat either. So I hit it and totally shift to 2nd way too early because I wasn't really anticipating the race. And she get's a lurch ahead. Well, she should have hit it harder or something, cause I just layed on that accelerator in 2nd until about 7100 RPM at which point I had creeped about 1/4 length ahead. I was impressed cause she chirped it into 3rd (now that's some freakin' torque baby!) but she must've just throttled it after takin' it out of second too early. Still, it was just awesome and I was crackin' up that this old lady raced me. We got up to almost 90 and then she laid off and I cut over a few lanes and hit the brakes. One thing is for sure, both of these cars (hers and mine) have got some damn good brakes.
Anyways, someone needs to tell her that she should be pretty much crushing anything out there besides vettes, 911s, ram airs, or your atypical import-mods or exotics. Still, it was fun for all and gave me a smile.
But I ramble....and have to do some matlab programing now. Yay.
--So later!
Cannis
PS, I noticed that neat option at the bottom for poll posting and thought I'd see what y'all think about old moms drivin' cobras.
Personally I think it's annoying for some reason. Get a cheesy 3 series or somethin.
Jastang 05-11-2002, 12:24 AM Well, I think the more people that can buy a Cobra the better, so Ford will keep making them. That being said, IT SHOULD BE ME!!!
That's cool that you kept up with her. Is your Boxster an "S" model? I think you know that she should have spanked you. But, this goes to show how important driving is while racing. She probably was just babying it a little bit. Makes a big difference.
Welcome to DA, dude!! And what is matlab?
Snouter 05-11-2002, 01:04 AM A soccer mom drives a big ugly SUV, wears sunglasses at all times, has a cell phone glued to her head, and can't park that beast to save her life.
What Cannis raced was a rad older chick who still has some life left in her.

Phew! There's still some hope for me after all!
I'm 42, and my daily driver is a '99 GT droptop with o/r pipes and flowmasters.
Glad to know someone out there thinks it's OK!

You better be planning on running something down the track this year, at least once.
Maybe if my car is there you will try it out :D

Well, I was gonna run the car last Friday, but Steve was sick so we didn't go to the track. Yes, I am serious - I really was going to run it.
I'm getting braver in my old age! :D

Pshhaww!!! I hate those folks you're talking about!
But, in general women shouldn't drive fast cars.

Jastang...
No I don't have a Boxster S but it wouldn't have made that much difference anyhow, she still should have beat me. Or as you so eloquently put it, spanked me :D But you are totally right about how important driving and just knowing your car throughout is what makes a good racer. Not to say that I am, but I'm obviously better than she was...which...well that's still not saying much...considering she's some middle aged woman...but I digress!
Anyways, yeah I don't even think she was babying it, as I said I think she just mis-shifted by coming out of 2nd too early. At which point she floored it and popped into 3rd thus chirping the wheels. She needed to bring 2nd all the way to redline and I never would have made up that initial lead she got coming out of 1st. Rather I would have been seeing tail-lights and--if she does this often enough--the emergency flashers indicating, "Ha ha. Race over. I spanked you you little 911 wannabe!" *****! Oh wait, she didn't do that. :)
And matlab...it's this lame program that is used for statistical analysis and mathematics stuff. It's got lots of graphic capabilities and it's fairly simple to program in so I had to write some dumb stuff on modulator numbers for a class I'm in (I'm at UCSD).
K
Adios...
BTW, sorry to whoever moved this (Manu?) for putting it in the wrong place. I didnt' realize there was a cars discussion forum!
Take Care all
Adios

Damn, you need to move to Afganistan. Tell me I dont' need to be driving a Mustang when I'm that age, and I'll chop your balls off right quick.
PFDarkside 05-12-2002, 03:35 AM C'mon man... she actually raced you! That's awesome! Who cares who "should" have won... She made some money, now she can afford a Cobra. Be glad that she wasn't someone that bought it just because it was the top of the line model... :)
jillianjiggs 05-12-2002, 04:08 AM Pshaw...if she wanted top of the line, she COULD have got a Cobra R. That would have just pissed you off more.
Criminal 05-12-2002, 10:35 AM Could someone tell me just what a Soccor Mom is anyway? I have heard this term so much.

Mothers with kids in many activites, all of which are generalized by "soccer", and which creates the need for a large vehicle. Since SUV's are the rage, they usually drive them (as opposed to a station wagon or minivan). Facts of the soccer mom:
1.) They love their kids. As evidenced by the "Honor Roll" bumper stickers and the soccer ball w/ kid's team on it.
2.) They think that they are important for being a working mom that transports their kids to stuff, so they are often on cell phones.

I happen to be a middle-aged woman (or an "old mom" if you prefer) and I happen to drive a somewhat modified Mustang GT 5-spd. That car is my daily driver and will be until it is traded for something else - like a Cobra or a 'vette, preferably a Z06.
Too bad if that annoys you. :p
RedLine99 05-12-2002, 08:17 PM Some of the funnest races I've been in have been against women...nothing like doing 140 and listening to HER shift into 5th.
Boxters are 911 wannabees? What, they're just VW's in a Porsche shell...didn't those guys in Stuttgart learn....?

Um NO.
They're more like Audi's in a Porsche shell.
So there!
Fordman50 05-15-2002, 08:00 AM HELL YES THEY SHOULD! When I was a kid my grandma has a 4 speed red 69 GTO vert with a Ram air 400! That ***** was bad and I attribute much of my interest in fast cars to her.
jillianjiggs 05-18-2002, 02:03 PM You're right Jastang...you can't step over the line. That is, you can't when you mention my stang. I'll post a pic when geocities is back up. And you can bet your butt, I'll be driving one for a LONG time. :) Except that once I run this fox into the ground, it'll be a 2002 or an old fast back.
