NEW ORLEANS (AP)--Three New Orleans police officers are facing battery charges after investigators reviewed a videotape showing two patrolmen repeatedly punching a 64-year-old man accused of public intoxication and a third officer grabbing and shoving an Associated Press Television News producer who helped capture the confrontation on tape.
After being questioned and arrested, the three officers were suspended without pay Sunday, police spokesman Marlon Defillo said. The police promised a criminal investigation...
Janus 10-10-2005, 11:37 AM Probably gave them lip. What's up Kraw; what's the scoop?
jimmyjude 10-10-2005, 06:28 PM I watched this video and I honestly don't see what the cops did wrong and why there is such condemnation of them..
Granted I "knee-jerk" support the police.
But, as an aficionado of "Cops" the television show, my favorite is "Cops: New Orleans" and "Cops: Mardi Gras". In all of the NO episodes of Cops there were very similar fights going on between police and people on the streets.
I know that the left love to attack the cops, but I honestly don't see where they went wrong here
igofast 10-10-2005, 06:34 PM Looked pretty brutal to me, the cop punched the guy in the head 4 or 5 times, and thus hitting his head on the wall. If the guy was swinging at him, fine, but he wasn't moving.
Truth Teller 10-10-2005, 06:50 PM This was an elderly 64 year old man who did nothing violent.
These SOBs should be locked up and have the key thrown away.
86Dude 10-10-2005, 07:26 PM The NO police force is just about THE most corrupt group of taxpayer financed thugs this side of D.C. This should really come as no surprise as this is the same police force that started rounding up guns and abandoning their posts.
Snouter 10-10-2005, 07:31 PM Those were the ones who were seen looting at the local Wal-Mart there I think. :p
This was an elderly 64 year old man who did nothing violent.
Apparently he was a public drunk, and in the video, he was clearly resisting arrest. We don't know what else he did yet, obviously. And don't expect CNN to let people know the full story since they are hoping this is another Rodney King scenario. By the way, when is the last time CNN showed any videos of Black on White violence? Are the liberal cable stations playing this video because they have an agenda?
These SOBs should be locked up and have the key thrown away.
That is a frightening, but revealing comment by a self proclaimed leftist; one who believes in the tyranny of a destructive leftist vision. Don't the officers deserve a trial at least, your leftist tyrannical view of the world notwithstanding?
86Dude 10-10-2005, 07:46 PM Snouter has a point, but as a cop hater I tend to ignore the rational and lean toward the negative.
igofast 10-10-2005, 07:48 PM Snouter, witnesses who saw the whole thing first hand have come forward saying the man was indeed drunk, but barely resisted until he was assaulted by the cop.
Truth Teller 10-10-2005, 07:49 PM The camera didn't lie.
Snouter 10-10-2005, 07:54 PM Snouter, witnesses who saw the whole thing first hand have come forward saying the man was indeed drunk, but barely resisted until he was assaulted by the cop.
On the video, the drunk appeared to be resisting before the cop softened him up. But still, why would he continue to resist when several cops are trying to cuff him, unless he had the presence of mind to know that a big cash payoff is guarenteed in such a situation?
The camera didn't lie.
The questions, answer the questions.

Excellent! I saw that on my TV news last night, and I was grossed back to the Stone Age. Utter public police brutality. They're not just thugs, they're stupid thugs. Yay, if they are truly punished...
Della April 10-10-2005, 09:59 PM ...in the video, he was clearly resisting arrest.
Yeah, clearly... What the....?
It reminds me of the joke about the thug on trial for kicking a man in the head, who says "Well, 'e was just hitting his face against my boot, yer honour"...
Snouter, you see what you want to see.
Pappy&Me 10-10-2005, 10:00 PM Why should a police officer risk getting hurt ? I say knock his ass out if he won't behave . If he was violent, use it back on him .
Cops get no respect from general population . Not enough pay for what they do .
Keep the egotistocal maniac atheletes who make millions . my heros are cops, soldiers and firemen .
Pappy&Me 10-10-2005, 10:06 PM Just heard on radio aready useing race card . Said it was racially motivated . Maybe they should all quit and let them kill each other off ! If the citizens won't stand up for their protectors ,let them protect their damn selves .
I smell a rat here , do yall ?

The only rat I smell is the NO police squad.
The man wasn't violent. He was 65 years old, and facing four cops, dammit! If they beat your husband or your grand child, would they still be your heroes? (I take it your husband is elderly, like this victim..)
Pappy&Me 10-10-2005, 10:22 PM Snouter has a point, but as a cop hater I tend to ignore the rational and lean toward the negative.
LOL. But Snout is one to follow for good info . :nice:

I risk a Papsmear for saying this, but THINK about what you're saying. Police have an obligation to restrain themselves because they wield 100 times the power of the average Joe on the street. An old drunk man? LMAO, OMG somebody call SWAT we got a live one here!! As for resisting arrest, arguing with an cop could lead to resisting arrest with no violence involved whatsoever.
Cops get no respect from general population . Not enough pay for what they do .
Most cops never fire their weapon in their entire career. I'm sorry, but I don't see why they should get paid so much just because they're in harms way. They spend most of their time peeking in cars for drugs and that is the reality of it. Respect is something earned and not something I'm obligated to give willy nilly.
My heros are cops, soldiers and firemen .
Fair enough when it's deserved as it sometimes is. Nothing wrong with that.

If they beat my child or husband they just saved me the trouble of doing it . If they go out and shove cops around I hope they get the hell beat out of them . Might save their life in long run . Sniff sniff ?

I agree entirely.
But the cop-haters seem to think that cops should not only be disarmed but that they should only wear lime-green panties and use fluffy pink feather dusters to affect arrests.

Are you constitutionally incapable of treating someone you don't agree with, with respect?
Probably gave them lip. What's up Kraw; what's the scoop?
you prob know more then I do. I'm kinda out of the news loop right now :(
NOPD is corrupt though, 86 does speak the truth below.

funny you mention those ladies. I read elsewhere that it turned out they were meter-maids or whatever they are called. They wear similar uniforms as NOPD but aren't cops
Baboon 10-11-2005, 08:22 AM I'm usually a pretty firm supporter of cops, but jeebus....four cops beating the hell out of this guy? Look at the videos...the guy is lying on the ground in a pool of his own blood. If four cops can't take down a 64 year old drunk without kicking the snot out of him, those cops suck. As far as the "He was a drunk" excuse, come on. Half the people walking around the French Quarter at any given time are drunk.

Beat a guy who is not fighting back?
Kicking a man who is on the ground while handcuffed?
Accosting a cameraman?
Sure this is normal police procedure.... FOR THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA!

I doubt it will happen. Time and time again we see how cops get away with murder often literaly). Once, just once we did see a few cops in LA get a slap on the wrist but that was a very rare exception. I will bet the house that these cops don't see a day of prison and if they do it will not be the same kind of time that any of the rest of us would get under similar circumstances.
Why should a police officer risk getting hurt ? I say knock his ass out if he won't behave . If he was violent, use it back on him . It does not appear that the victim was violent. Those officers were not in any risk of being hurt, except maybe breaking thier hands on the guys face.
Cops get no respect from general population . Not enough pay for what they do.Respect is earned and not given. I hear lots of people talk about how thankless police work is. Well maybe so. But everytime a cop beats or kills somebody they give the entire force a black eye. And what is worse, when somebody like these guys does something wrong the entire goddam force makes excuses for them. My only answer is if you hate police work and can't take the stress than get another job.
Keep the egotistocal maniac atheletes who make millions . my heros are cops, soldiers and firemen .
And my hero is Mumia Abu Jamel. :nice:

True.

I agree 100%.
Being drunk is not a flogable offense [nor is it a sin].

Brian 10-11-2005, 06:19 PM I think hell is freezing over as I find myself agreeing with TT and Crim.
I wonder if any of these guys were involved with the 200+ cars that got stolen from a dealers lot...
http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/10/07/katrina.cadillacs.ap/?section=cnn_mostpopular
"It is a very, very active investigation," Kris Wartelle, spokeswoman for the Louisiana attorney general, said Friday. "We expect developments quickly."
Wartelle would not comment on why the officers may have taken the cars, or whether they were used in the line of duty.
However, the cars may have been taken before the hurricane even roared into town August 29, according to the president and general manager of the dealership, Doug Stead.
Stead said the cars included 88 new Cadillacs and Chevrolets, 40 used cars, 52 customers' cars and a restored 1970 El Camino and 1966 Impala.
"We put the loss on new cars at $3.7 million," Stead said. "The used cars ran another $900,000."
When reports first surfaced last month that officers may have taken the cars, New Orleans Police Superintendent Warren Riley said it was not considered looting because the officers patrolled in the cars.
"There were some officers who did use Cadillacs," Riley said. "Those cars were not stolen."
On Friday police spokesman Capt. Marlon Defillo said the department's only comment was that it was cooperating with the attorney general's investigation.
Police are also investigating 12 officers for allegedly looting or failing to stop looting. And about 250 police officers -- roughly 15 percent of the force -- could face discipline for leaving their posts without permission during Katrina and its aftermath.
Stead said he got a call August 28 while evacuating the city, telling him one of the dealership's garage doors was open. The rest of his trip was spent fielding calls about his cars.
"I had eight calls from people in an hour saying they heard I was giving police Cadillacs to drive," Stead said. "It seemed like everyone knew about it, so I knew we were in trouble."
Stead said he got calls from people telling him they had seen his cars in Baton Rouge, Houston and other cities with uniformed police officers driving them. He said people saw his cars parked outside a police precinct.
Protect and serve. Indeed.

It's perfectly possible... Either a particular cop had a grudge against him, (that's happened in NZ) or he's had a stroke or something (why would a cop know the diference between drunkeness and disability?)
