Poll: Katrina sparks shift in American priorities
Majority says Bush's focus should be on domestic issues

WASHINGTON - Hurricane Katrina has made Americans heartsick. They’re depressed about the images of destruction and despair they see from the storm zone and they increasingly want President Bush to shift his attention toward home, a poll released Thursday found.

More than half of Americans now say it is more important for the president to focus on domestic policy — the first time since Sept. 11, 2001 that domestic matters have been viewed as a higher priority than the war on terrorism in polling by the Pew Research Center.

Two-thirds said the president could have done more to get relief efforts going quickly, according to the survey.

The slow-moving response to the hurricane appears to have shaken American confidence in the government’s ability to deal with a major disaster. Four in 10 said the response to the hurricane has made them less confident about the government’s ability to handle a major terrorist attack...

I believe it was Plato that said "the sinews of war are an inexhaustable supply of money" The Americans are finding that to be true. It really dosent matter where the money came from or what it limited it comes out of the same taxpayers pocket. Of course Bush is finding out you cant cut taxes and increase spending you wind up with incredible deficits that way. Perhaps someone should sit him down and explain basic economics to the lad.

WASHINGTON - President Bush's job approval has dipped below 40 percent for the first time in the AP-Ipsos poll, reflecting widespread doubts about his handling of gasoline prices and the response to Hurricane Katrina.

Nearly four years after Bush's job approval soared into the 80s after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, Bush was at 39 percent job approval in an AP-Ipsos poll taken this week. That's the lowest since the the poll was started in December 2003.

The public's view of the nation's direction has grown increasingly negative as well, with nearly two-thirds now saying the country is heading down the wrong track.

"As a nation, we are pretty well stretched," said Barry Allen, a political independent from Reed City, Mich. "I approve of some of the things the president has done, and disapprove of others. Overall, I disapprove."

Allen said he liked some of Bush's economic steps during his first term but has been dissatisfied with the president's economic moves in his second term, his Iraq policy and his handling of gasoline prices.

Allen worries Hurricane Katrina has taken the wind out of an economy that was moving in the right direction.

With gasoline racing past $3 a gallon, Bush's standing on dealing with those prices may be one of his biggest problems — seven in 10 said they disapprove.

And just over half in the poll, 52 percent, said they disapprove of the president's handling of the hurricane.

Just interesting to note, people maybe wouldn't have gotten so upset with the unnecessary deaths of Katrina victims if gas hadn't also shot up.

52% were upset about Katrina victims.
7 out of 10 were upset about gas prices.

We don't really care if the man is inhumane as long as he keeps our gas prices low. But since he hasn't, whatever works to encourage these people to find another direction for American, I'm all for it.
