View Full Version : Ford recalls 3.8 million SUVs and pickups for fire hazard
WASHINGTON (AP) — Ford said Wednesday that it will recall 3.8 million pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles for a cruise control switch suspected of causing engine fires.
It is the fifth largest auto recall in U.S. history. (Related: Toyota recalls 1M trucks)
Ford said the recall of 1994-2002 model-year vehicles includes the company's hot-selling F-150 pickup truck, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator and Ford Broncos. The company said it will start sending recall notices to vehicle owners immediately.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the No. 2 U.S.-based automaker have been investigating complaints of engine fires linked to the switch.

86Dude 09-07-2005, 09:42 PM I'm trying to understand how a largely vacuum controlled mechanical device ends up causing an engine fire, or have I missed some technology? I'm quite old school.
The Frog 09-07-2005, 10:18 PM We used to have a Pinto....
Corky 09-08-2005, 03:51 AM It's sad that an American icon like Ford also happens to be one of the sh!ttyist automobile manufactures in the world today.

So did we.. I remember one time when I was a toddler, riding home from the grocery store. I let myself out of my car seat and found the eggs, then cracked them one by one on the floor behind my mom who was driving. I then began stirring them with a stick. When we got home and she figured out what I was up to, I told her I was just making scrambled eggs. It's one of my fondest memories.

You're the only one spewing nonsense in this thread. You assume that because I dislike Ford Mo. Co. -- for various reasons -- that I'm someone who has "fallen victim to the media pr that says if it's made here it sucks." For your information, nearly every vehicle I've ever owned has been manufactured in the good ol' US of A by either General Motors or Harley Davidson. In fact, there's nothin' anyone can say that will convince me to buy a vehicle that's NOT made in this country. So, in the future I hope you'll refrain from making stupid assumptions like this 'cause you only make yourself look like an a$$ ;)

Well then don't bash American cars, save it for the commies.. :nice:
Most companies can only fantasize about having a legendary product in their line-up like the Mustang for instance. Virtually everybody in this country has a positive experience burned into their memory in one of them, they have soul, they are the things kids dream of owning when they get older. The appliances that are hot sellers these days aren't what people will talk about 40-50-60 years from now to their grandkids and great grandkids. That kind of thing is a runaway success.
These CC switches Ford used for years were a bad design as far as I'm concerned, they are not in use anymore, they were used when the company was run by business people who only cared about the bottom line, now the company is run by the family again. They seem to be on the right track, hopefully Bill Ford keeps on doing the right thing. And what's ironic about it all to me is that in the last few years the quality of American cars has surpassed most of the imports, and many imports like Toyota have fallen behind makes like Hyundai  But don't expect to hear about that in the media..
kellet 09-08-2005, 07:32 AM Every American car I've owned or that has been owned by my family has been a flimsy, unreliable piece of trash, except my Grandpa's Ranger. My experience tells me Japanese cars are better, so that's what I buy.

list the cars... there's **** American cars and then there's quality American cars.
302Riz 09-08-2005, 09:04 AM My 12 year old Ford still runs good. :nice: I will never own an import. I will never buy an "American" car built in Mexico either.
Dr_EluSivE 09-08-2005, 01:25 PM i hate to break it to most of you import worshipers... but most of your "imports" are made In america, by americans. Some hondas and toyotas are more american then some chevys (which are made in Mexico) As far ford being the worst.. Not by a long shot. The vehicle effected by this, happens to be the #1 selling vehicle in the WORLD! Nothing can touch an F150 in total sales. You guys need to read up on the maintence schedules you must be doing something wrong, I havent had a ford last LESS then 150k (usually sell em by then) my 13 year old mustang has 175k on it and still runs and drives great!
Dr.
Gibson 09-08-2005, 01:30 PM All auto makers have problems. I've had a honda and a ford in my short driving career and I'll choose ford between the two based on my experience. The Honda was a piece of garbage. Broke often and was EXPENSIVE. Ford broke less often and parts were WAY cheaper.

:nice: Great post kellet. :D
I'd love to have seen your mom's face when she saw "breakfast" on the floor of the car :eek3:
Brian 09-08-2005, 04:11 PM Had two Pintos. A '75 that got t-boned and a '78 that the front end got ran over by a 3 axle dump truck carrying 13 ton of gravel.
In fact, with the exception of one Chevy, one Buick and one Olds, every car I had was a Ford. And by far the Fords were the best.
