Bo Diddley
(1955)
Bo Diddley bought his babe a diamond ring,
If that diamond ring don't shine,
He gonna take it to a private eye,
If that private eye can't see
He'd better not take the ring from me.
Bo Diddley caught a nanny goat,
To make his pretty baby a Sunday coat,
Bo Diddley caught a bear cat,
To make his pretty baby a Sunday hat.
Mojo come to my house, ya black cat bone,
Take my baby away from home,
Ugly ole mojo, where ya bin,
Up your house, and gone again.
Bo Diddley, Bo Diddley have you heard?
My pretty baby said she wasn't fer it.
Snouter 08-25-2005, 12:36 PM I don't know if anyone has seen Bo do the song. I think he uses an open E tuning and frets all the strings on the third fret for a "one chord boogie groove" in G. There is a slight tension relief when there is a change up an octave from G to F. Does everyone have an mp3 of the song?
RedLine99 08-27-2005, 10:08 PM well..the rythm is basically the same as who do you love but i couldn;t figure out how to do it with guitar and vocals at the same time until i finished it and well..i'm kinda in a Uriah Heepish mood..but here it is anyway...
in the fanoriginal folder..boo827a

Snouter 08-27-2005, 11:05 PM Pretty cool version RedLine.

There is the issue of "the song remaining the same" with this and a number of Bo Diddley's material. I heard George Thoroughgood and the Destroyers on the radio the other day with their version of Who Do You Love and basically it is a heavy version of the same thing. Your vocals on the last verse actually sounds like Robert Plant as of late.
allso, I listened to that song "hey bo didley"which is teh smae , but with different words and arrangements, and a background vocal. that I couldnt help noticing that this song is actually allso the same as 'magic bus' by the Who....btw stairway to heaven is allso an old bluessong which they used..
Snouter 08-28-2005, 01:08 PM Let me know if anyone needs an mp3 to borrow of the original song called Bo Diddley.

"close the distance" has a neat giimme shelter feel to it, oki.!
oh redline, I really like yours too. a bit different then most of your songs, sort of teh techno version... cool.
yea sorry about my version but I felt like making some noise. I sampled the base and rythem guitar....

Snouter 09-24-2005, 10:31 PM I will try to do a version soon.
cool, looking forward to it.
Snouter 10-01-2005, 12:48 PM I began assembling some "jungle beat" drum patterns last night. Hopefully, the whole thing will be completed by tomorrow.
Snouter 10-01-2005, 05:50 PM I am just messing around trying to get it going. Here are a couple seconds of some preliminary ideas. Again I feel compelled to do the banner thing, :( although not enough time so far to download pics for a collage. You have to scroll down to it.

Snouter 10-02-2005, 03:38 AM Thanks. I managed to do something, not sure what it is.
cool, snouter! great playing, as usual.
but youre off the singing lately, arent you? why?
I seriously like your singing.
Snouter 10-02-2005, 08:48 PM Thanks, I appreciate the kind words about the attempts at vocals and a while back I told RedLine I would try them on the You Really Got Me, but I just never got around to it. Maybe on the next one.
RedLine99 10-03-2005, 09:03 PM its got a pretty cool beat and neat feel to it, Snouter :nice: i would experiment with the mix a bit..maybe put the solo guitar out center and front more and dupe the rythm guitar onto he left side...that's just me though :p
Snouter 10-03-2005, 10:24 PM Thanks RedLine, I will try it again maybe and see what happens.
Snouter 10-19-2005, 12:16 AM How do y'all feel about the 1963 song by the Kingsman, Louie, Louie? It is the basis for a ton of rock songs, but it is kind of boring at this point. What do you think?
RedLine99 10-19-2005, 01:11 AM eh..it might be kinda fun. i need the drum practice :D
Snouter 10-20-2005, 03:56 PM Had to do a quick guitar combat at another site.

Snouter 10-22-2005, 09:29 AM Thanks oki I just got a copy.
GanjaFreebird 10-22-2005, 03:54 PM "Louie Louie" is a great song with a lot of importance, despite its simplicity, but how about we try something that not ANY musician can play and especially feel...how about some acoustic Delta blues, where the rules would be to use ONLY acoustic guitar, nothing else, and no more than one overdubbes (in case you want two guitars on it). Also, one would be allowed to use extra help from somebody else (second guitar, vocals...)
I have a recording of myself and my partner doing Robert Johnson's "Love In Vain" (also covered by people like The Rolling Stones), which we recorded just in one take with 2 acoustics and him singing. One thing is, if anybody is willing to participate in such combat, the song one does needs to be done in Delta Blues style, which means no Chicago Blues, Texas Blues, British Blues, Blues Rock, just pure acoustic blues as it was done in the 1930's. Who is up for that? It may not be easy for some people who don't feel the blues or know much about it, but it never hurts to try.
great idea. I like 30's blues.
Snouter 10-23-2005, 02:45 AM Ganga, how about this, we can tape two fingers together and then do some Django material using 3 fingers like he did. And we will use guitars with real old strings and stuff. Then we really feel the rust and everything. :p

Acoustic Blues? :p When did that become a genre? But you did forget Jazz Blues and Country Blues. We aren't allowed to dabble in those genres either? :(
Have you ever done any of the songs in the Guitar Combat, ever? If not, why not?
A little advice, if you ever intend on trying to make money with music, you might want to think more progressively rather than crippling yourself copying stuff that was only made digestible after being completely overhauled by the British. ;)
I managed got 3 votes so far at Ultimate Guitar (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=272679)

I would go for a Django song, he's my favorite Jazz guitarist of all time pretty much, but I'd rather wait for my partner to come back from California to record something like that, since he can immitate Django way better than I ever could, and in fact, in order to cover him well, it does requires a lot of musicianship, you wouldn't come even close to what he does even if you added 10 more fingers to your left hand :p
And yes, I wanna do HONEST recordings, if that's what you mean, no drum machines, synthisizers, computer programs, weird guitar effects, overproduction...I'm about the REAL thing, just real pure musicianship. You can't handle it Snouter, can you?

My version of "Love In Vain" does include a few country-blues and jazz blues guitar licks, even a little bit of Eric Clapton influence, but it is still acoustic (only 2 acoustic guitars and vocals, all in one take) and done pretty much in Delta style, so yes, one is allowed to do whatever creative things he/she wants, but it still has to be acoustic Delta Blues.
Have you ever done any of the songs in the Guitar Combat, ever? If not, why not?
Yes I have, check RedLine's yahoo page...it has 3 of my songs, 2 originals, and 1 Jimmy Reed cover and I've done them for the guitar combat, and I thought you heard them too, or at least pretended that you did :p You don't remember? What have YOU been smoking? :p

Link doesn't work, and besides what is one little website to judge a person's musical talent?
A little advice, if you ever intend on trying to make money with music, you might want to think more progressively rather than crippling yourself copying stuff that was only made digestible after being completely overhauled by the British.
1. It worked for the British, didn't it ;) Where would be anybody from British Invasion (or even American great rock bands), even Clapton and Hendrix, if wasn't for old blues?
2. Why don't you tell us how much money do YOU make with music, you can even include all the tips from open mic nights and family reunion parties :p ? Seriously, I'd like to know, after all since you know it all it must have worked well for you, right? Is music even your job, or has it ever been, or do you just play the guitar at home for fun (and open mics) and record stuff on your computer that doesn't go anywhere but your website??
And what I would also like to know is who (among great and famous musicians) you ever played (or even jammed with), or met, or been praised by after they heard you play? Have you ever been in a band in your life? Have you ever sold one of your CDs? Have you ever made even a single $1 from playing a show? I know I just made $250 last night just for playing a 2 hour show, what about you?
3. I don't wanna bragg about my musical achievments too much, but let's say that (after playing guitar only for like 7-8 years, playing professionaly for about 2 years, and having my own PA system for less than half a year) I've made money from shows that can be counted in thousands of $...hell, the sale of my demo CD's alone is big enough to afford all of my bad habits :D Obviously whatever I cover, sing or play works for me good enough so far, considering me still living in Virginia, where the demands for music are very very low, and I still go to college so I can't perform as often as I want to.
I actually make more money than many other equally good (or better) musicians that I know, not that it really matters or says it all about having a great talent, but it obviously works for me, whatever I do.
4. So are you saying you are too much of a chicken to compete with me on fair musicianship terms such as playing acoustic guitar and singing blues the old style without no technology and computer programs and special effects BS? I thought you were making fun of me for not participating and running away? Well here I am, as soon as Redline will give me the permission to send him the new song, it will be there, it's all ready, the question is can you actually perform a song like a real musician, take the acoustic, sing and play, without just jamming on the electric to the chord progression that you program? I thought you said that old Blues musicians suck and can't play very well...can you do it like them?? Or anything close?? C'mon, since you're "better than B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix and Bo Diddley" as you claim, I'm sure it wouldn't take you to lift one finger to put me (or anybody else) to shame with some pure Blues, right? Am I right? And remember, you can use another singer or other guitar player if you want, but it still has to be a blues with only acoustic guitars (well, maybe harmonica too:D ).
Putting down great music is not gonna help you be any better of a musician, but if you actually study it and learn it, that will help you play your best.
GanjaFreebird 10-23-2005, 08:00 PM Speaking of Django and myself, I just remembered that last year when I played a 3-song set for the music department in my school (as my final exam for Jazz-guitar lessons), Harris Simon http://www.wm.edu/music/faculty.php?personid=7423 who is an amazing Jazz pianist and a professor in my college, thought that I sounded a lot like Django during my solos, which definately made me proud of myself :D
Still, I don't believe that I come anywhere as close to his style as does my music partner, but then again, I think he's a much better musician than I am anyways, as much as he disagrees. :)
