View Full Version : Music Recommendations Thread
SwiftSloth 08-19-2005, 06:01 AM Try these, according to mood, or listen to them all to find some top bands that you might (or might) know of in the following style. Feel free to post your own, although you certainly dont need to use the elaborate system. Pretty much saying: If you like (this) try (song), by (band name). I was just bored and looking to kill time. So I chose some of my top bands. Mostly lesser known, to gain some exposure but some by some bands you may have heard of, but never tried. The funny part? Everything I post I own. I buy all C.D.'s on my computer, and indeed do not upload to those who do not contribute. Good bands deserve to have their creations appreciated. I do just that. So I hope you get some good songs/bands out of this list. If one of my band scares you dont be afraid to try another, my tastes are pretty varied, but if you enjoy the genre I assure you, youll most likely enjoy the band.

Corpsecorps 08-20-2005, 03:21 AM Although having recently been trashing rap in the "Rap is so yesterday" thread, i am conscious of the fact i haven't heard all that much (i don't seek it out; duh).
The typical response by fans to trashing rap as i did, is to claim only a certain part of the genre is that way, and it is a poor characterization.
Thus, my request: Given that i have an absolute bottom of the barrel view of the genre as hoodlums + vulgarity + slang + noise pollution, can someone knowledgeable provide me with some examples of rap that do not fit my definition? (http://www.discussanything.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1067971&postcount=46)
I will then seek them out, give'em a listen, and adjust my views accordingly. :nice:

I'm really not sure if this counts exactly of rap but it is of a hip-hop-ish genre, and as close to rap as I'll ever get. You might check out the Gorillaz, they are pretty clever and from what I've heard, not vulgar.
SwiftSloth 08-20-2005, 04:09 AM Rap is an offshoot of Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop has tons of good material. Rap is kinda a juvenile, simplified version of it. It also tends to be filled with vile messages.
But I really am not sure that this discussion belongs in this thread... :hmm:
kellet 08-20-2005, 04:24 AM Some of my all time favorite albums:
My Bloody Valentine "Loveless"
Brain Eno "Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy"
Sisters of Mercy "Floodland"
Radiohead "Kid A" and "Amnesiac" (any Radiohead really)
Enya "Shepherd Moons"
Frank Black "Teenager of the Year"
Frank Black & the Catholics "Dog in the Sand"

The Pharcyde, album: BizarreRyde2thePharcyde
Best hip-hop album ever. Straight from LA, 100% gangster-free
Corpsecorps 08-20-2005, 07:51 AM Thanks all, for suggestions.
Please continue. I want to give this a fair shot.
(People talk about hip-hop as if it's the mellowed version of rap, so i assumed it came about subsequently)
Ras Bizarre High 08-20-2005, 12:16 PM No, hip-hop came first technically, at least as a strictly music thing....although the term "rap" has been around longer, since street-hustling has been around, it usually referred to any fast-talking sort of street performance/con and not necessarily to rhyming over beats. Rhyming to beats was called MC'ing and comes from old DJ's who would spin and "rap" at house/block parties in Jamaica and the Bronx from the 70's.
As far as more recommendations, it depends on how mellow you want it. I like the Pharcyde because even though they're not gangster, they're not corny either. They're funny and they still curse, they just don't talk about guns or how bad they are.
If you like that Pharcyde album, check out Hieroglyphics, Del the Funkee Homosapien, Dilated Peoples, Swollen Members or the Alkaholiks.
If you want some REAL mellow, flowery hip-hop (hippie-hop) then you might wanna check out De La Soul or Black-Eyed Peas, or Tribe Called Quest. That stuff is a little too soft for me, although De La Soul "Stakes is High" is one of my favorite albums.
lilnymph 08-20-2005, 01:45 PM I am liking this thread, I need to expand my music collection, so a thread with suggestions is always very welcome :)

This looks more like amagedden than music titles . you need to mellow on some of this violent doomdays music . And yall call me paranoid and prophet of doom ! :eek7:
Pappy&Me 08-20-2005, 08:57 PM I was just listening to some very old country music , something i rarely do, since I'm more partial t R&B , some classics and classic rock .
Anyway, I had heard this song many times in past ,but never realized then how much more it would make sense in the future .
If anyone can look it up and paste it's lyrics here you can see what I mean .
Young people need hope and romance filled songs to listen to . Real romance ,not this humping, cussing artificial stuff the hollyhoods and music producers push.
Lots of beautiful love songs and ispirational music to balance out some of the gloom . I listen to gloom music too but try and keep a balance .
Ras Bizarre High 08-20-2005, 10:01 PM Hey Pappy, if you like classic country, which I do as well, you might like this sort of stuff too:
Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys (Amazon link) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000BWVEC/ref=ord_cart_shr/103-0150415-3947811?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance)
Ras Bizarre High 08-20-2005, 11:36 PM If anyone's into dub, one of my favorite genres, here's a pretty tight little click, a Native American dub outfit:
The Fire This Time (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000J74V/qid=1124595214/sr=1-9/ref=sr_1_9/103-0150415-3947811?v=glance&s=music)
SwiftSloth 08-21-2005, 12:51 AM Who here likes acoustic folk rock? Elliott Smith would be a good choice to listen to. Sadly he killed himself, but he had a good bit of music out before.
Try--
Miss Misery
No Name #3
Between The Bars
That should give you a good feel as to what he's like.

Pappy&Me 08-21-2005, 12:46 PM Newer songs grandkids listen to I like...krptonite , Smoothe, Don't Speak [ no Doubt ] ", Waterfalls ?"
TheNatural 08-22-2005, 09:19 AM For the dub fans out there, I just copped this killer cd by Crazy Caribs called Dancehall Dub.
also, whoever posted about The Slit -- they are AWESOME.
bopst 08-22-2005, 11:06 AM Lee Hazlewood (http://www.leehazlewood.net/)
An American pop/country/rock icon. worked with Nancy Sinatra though his solo work is what you should seek out...
Toots & The Maytals (http://www.tootsandthemaytals.net/toots/)
Ignore the new duets album, The Maytals work of the late 60's/early 70's gives the Wailers a run for their money as the most important group to ever have come out of Jamaica. "Funky Kingston" is a masterpiece...
Peaches (http://www.peachesrocks.com/)
Raw, nasty and sweaty. Just like God intended....
A cursive fan? I've never met someone else into them, when did you see them/get into them?
My current fav is Mars Volta (sorry for breaking format)
SwiftSloth 08-23-2005, 05:58 AM A cursive fan? I've never met someone else into them, when did you see them/get into them?
Yea, for some reason fans are few and far between... They have a good base, its just very spread out it seems.
A friend recomended them... I put them off for a while then gave them some listening time. Not a big fan of the real early stuff, they advanced greatly in Domestica, and then again into The Ugly Organ. The Ugly Organ is one of my favorite albums. Its sound is original/artistic but still rock, a rarity in the emo/punk/rock scene today.
My current fav is Mars Volta (sorry for breaking format)
Mars Volta is an awesome band. Although I must admit, I enjoy De Loused far more then Frances The Mute. Frances is still a good album though.
bopst 08-23-2005, 10:19 AM LCD Soundsystem (http://www.lcdsoundsystem.com/intro.php)
Pumping, keyboard driven dance music from NY. Fun without being stupid....
Shuggie Otis (http://www.luakabop.com/shuggie_otis/)
Criminally unknown 70's funk/soul innovator. Apparently, the Stones wanted Shuggie to play with them before they settled on Ron Wood....
Dale Watson (http://www.dalewatson.com/)
Dale Watson is keepin' good ol' American Country music alive and well. The Honky Tonk-thankfully-ain't dead yet....
Von Apfelstrudel 08-23-2005, 10:43 AM My current fav is Mars Volta (sorry for breaking format)
\o/
Like SwiftSloth, I aslo enjoy deloused more, but I've only recently gotten Frances, and simply might not have gotten the mood yet ...
bopst 08-23-2005, 10:55 AM Jackie Mittoo (http://www.jahsonic.com/JackieMittoo.html)
Legendary keyboardist for Studio One.
SecretSamadhi 08-23-2005, 10:56 AM I have to say Coldplay's new one - X&Y , its completely rocking and soothing my world since I bought it Saturday. :nice:
Its the first album I have of theirs, I think I may go buy more!!
bopst 08-23-2005, 11:01 AM Charles Mingus (http://www.mingusmingusmingus.com/flash.htm)
Great American Bassist who played with Duke, Monk, Parker as well as his own essential solo work. "Ah Um" is genius....
igofast 08-23-2005, 01:38 PM Toots & The Maytals (http://www.tootsandthemaytals.net/toots/)
"Funky Kingston" is a masterpiece...
Correct! I can't get enough of that song.
A little known band that I think deserves much more recognition is Bedouin Soundclash (http://www.bedouinsoundclash.com/). (click name for their website)
Great accoustic-y oldschool ska/reggae/dub. Check 'em out. All 3 mp3's on their site are great.
TheNatural 08-23-2005, 03:39 PM Wow, I never thought I would see Shuggie Otis, LCD Soundsystem, and Jackie Mittoo? This thread is awesome. Recently, I read an interview of Shuggie Otis (done by Mos Def) and the rumor about him playing in the Rolling Stones is true. He was asked. Anyway, such a talent.
Along the reggae tip, please check out Niney the Observer and Scientist. Honestly, anything they've touched is amazing....
Ras Bizarre High 08-23-2005, 07:43 PM To tie all the dub and mars Volta referrals together, the cats from mars Volta/ATTD had a dub outfit together before they formed mars volta called Defacto....pretty good modern dub/synth/old-school gothish sort of stuff. hard to find, but I think you can download it.
Oh and I definitely second the Mingus recommendation. get The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, his best album by far IMO (although all his stuff is good)
bopst 08-24-2005, 11:39 AM Oh yeah, Niney (http://www.ireggae.com/niney.htm) rules it. "Blood & Fire" is one of my all time favorites....
Here's one of my favorite new compilations :Dread Meets Punk Rockers Uptown (http://www.reggae-reviews.com/donletts.html)
Antony & The Johnsons (http://www.antonyandthejohnsons.com/)
Sings like Nina Simone, Jimmy Scott and Nick Drake all rolled into one. Amazing. "My Lady's Story" off, "I Am A Bird" is one of the most disarmingly beautiful songs I have ever heard...
Void (http://www.dischord.com/bands/void.shtml)
One of my favorite, if not my single favorite, band from the Dischord roster in the early 80's. Either they were great or awful. No inbetween. "My Rules" still finds its way onto the record player on a weekly basis...
U-Roy (http://u-roy.20m.com/)
The mighty, mighty U-Roy. Immensely influential (rap, hip hop, dancehall), U-Roy's records still sound fresh and timeless. "This Station, rocks the nation....WITH VERSION......
TheNatural 08-24-2005, 04:53 PM I didnt know that about Mars Volta -- was that Omar Rodriguez (I think that's his name) in Defacto?
nice tie in by the way
also, have you guys heard stuff off that Blood & Fire label? A lot of good stuff, including U-Roy, Niney, Mittoo, all the cats we're talking about....Even Junior Byles and Dennis Brown songs.
bopst 08-25-2005, 10:11 AM Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros (http://www.strummersite.com/)
Former Clash singer's last band rivals anything he did with that seminal group. "Global A Go-Go" is a must have for anybody who loves the Clash, Jimmy Cliff, King Sunny Ade, Link Wray & The Joe Cuba Sextette.
Ken Nordine (http://www.wordjazz.com/)
The term, "Word Jazz" was created for this unique artist. Funny, distrubing and perplexing at the same time...
Perrey & Kingsley (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000000EC3/103-1598177-7625464?v=glance)
Moog Syntheizer innovators from the 1960's.

I like Streetcore better, but Global is pretty great too.
bopst 08-25-2005, 05:36 PM Both are worth a solid listen. The new 101ers (http://www.astralwerks.com/101ers/default.html) (Strummer's first band) is pretty smokin' too..
Link Wray (http://www.rockabillyhall.com/LinkWray.html)
Lengendary rockabilly guitarist. "Rumble" (an instrumental) was banned when it first came out because it was thought that playing it was cause the youth to riot...
Thelonious Monk (http://www.monkzone.com/)
Jazz master of the piano. Unique, one of a kind style as a musician and song writer. The movie, "Straight No Chaser" is well worth your time....
VCR (http://www.scaredofvcr.com)
Minor Threat meets Kraftwerk. Amazing live....
bopst 09-11-2005, 10:49 AM Louis Jordan (http://www.zoo.co.uk/~primer/pdjordan.html)

The Congos (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000005L86/102-9917937-3544967?v=glance)
Produced by the immortal Lee "Scratch" Perry, "The Heart of the Congos" is one of best records to come out of Jamaica in the 1970's. "Fisherman" is an instant classic...
Yma Sumac (http://www.spaceagepop.com/sumac.htm)
The five-octave queen of exotica. Hauntingly beautiful....
Motorhead (http://www.imotorhead.com/)
Kings of pure, sweaty, no frills rock & roll, Motorhead are the zen masters of the idiom. "Stay Clean" is a song to live by...
Rah Bras (http://www.lovitt.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_music_info&products_id=42)
Absurdist dada pop masters from good ol' Richmond, Virginia. Fun without being stupid and a must see live....

I got sick of them over 2 years ago...but...gah!

Tralala 05-22-2008, 10:17 PM This is the kind of thread I always end up discovering new music from.... it's the best thing about the "long tail" and music.... before u had to read in a magazine or hunt around in a record store to find something cool -- which made the choices always subject to the "gatekeeping" of editors and music store buyers and etc... -- which would lead inevitably to mediocrity and the prevalence of "poser music" -- i.e. stuff that you want to like because you think it's cool, not because you really like it. Music journalism especially creates high-profiles for really lame stuff, because journalists are always looking behind their backs, trying to profile something that they think in 2 years people will think they were cool for liking "way back when".... I GREATLY prefer the democratic nature of threads like these, where people simply list their tastes and you can just look something up on itunes or youtube and check it out for yourself....
These days I'm really into techno and techno/rock and stuff like that -- try searching for these songs:
Thomas Falke "Revolution On The Dance Floor"
Groove Cutter "My Shooter"
Control One "Just A Little Bit"
Ian Carey "Redlight"
Kevin Weg "Dead Radio"
I don't usually go for techno but these are sort of like a wierd crossover between rock and techno/trance.
Here are also some downloads with some other cool stuff too -- http://www.electricfilebox.com/tracks
